Competitive Wednesday Baseball Board

Wednesday’s full slate of 15 games in Major League Baseball stacks up as a competitive one, with only three games showing lines of minus-160 or higher according to Bookmaker.com, and only three games with Starting Pitcher WHIP differences of .200 or more. That said, it might take a bit more work to successfully handicap today’s action, looking specifically for more subtle edges. Let’s break down the entire schedule and see if we can’t uncover some value.

(901) HOUSTON (MYERS) at (902) CHICAGO CUBS (LILLY) 2:20 PM
Line: Chicago -155, Total: 8
Starting pitcher WHIP edge: Chicago
Bullpen WHIP edge: Chicago
Offense Edge: Chicago (LARGE)
Recent Play Edge: Chicago
Overall Analysis: The Cubs bats have come alive lately, but as ******* readers know from yesterday’s feature piece, they have struggled horribly against bad teams this season. Both pitchers have fared well in their careers versus today’s opponent, but Myers is the hotter pitcher of late. Tough laying this price today.

(903) MILWAUKEE (WOLF) at (904) PITTSBURGH (DUKE) 7:05 PM
Line: Milwaukee -125, Total: 8.5
SP WHIP Edge: Milwaukee
BP WHIP Edge: Pittsburgh
Offense Edge: Milwaukee (LARGE)
Recent Play Edge: Milwaukee
Overall Analysis: Milwaukee’s overall dominance of the Pirates in recent years (32-10 L3 years) has to be given consideration here, and the Brewers are producing a lot of runs via the long ball of late. The Pirates’ Duke has been rocked by Milwaukee in recent starts while Wolf has enjoyed a ton of success against Pittsburgh.

(905) SAN DIEGO (GARLAND) at (906) ATLANTA (HANSON) 7:10 PM
Line: Atlanta -155, Total: 8
SP WHIP Edge: San Diego
BP WHIP Edge: San Diego
Offense Edge: Atlanta
Recent Play Edge: None
Overall Analysis: One of the best games on today’s board, Atlanta and Hanson are being shown quite a bit of respect by oddsmakers. The Braves are 3-1 this season against San Diego. GARLAND is 0-2 when starting against ATLANTA with an ERA of 14.03 and a WHIP of 2.998 in his career. While the line and home field seem to give the overall edge to Atlanta, you can discount the Padres, particularly as the dogs.

(907) COLORADO (HAMMEL) at (908) FLORIDA (NOLASCO) 7:10 PM
Line: Florida -115, Total: 8.5
SP WHIP Edge: Florida
BP WHIP Edge: Colorado (LARGE)
Offense Edge: Colorado
Recent Play Edge: None
Overall Analysis: The Rockies pounded the Marlins 10-0 on Tuesday to even up the current 4-game set at two games apiece. They are just 1-7 this season coming off a win by 6 runs or more. Though the Marlins are 4-3 in their L7 games, they have only batted .194 while producing 2.6 RPG during that span. Nolasco holds a significant edge historically versus opponent, with a 4-0 career won-lost mark and a WHIP of 0.967 against Colorado.

(909) WASHINGTON (STRASBURG) at (910) CINCINNATI (ARROYO) 7:10 PM
Line: Washington -115, Total: 7
SP WHIP Edge: Washington
BP WHIP Edge: Washington
Offense Edge: Cincinnati (LARGE)
Recent Play Edge: Cincinnati
Overall Analysis: To show how much oddsmakers are favoring Strasburg these days, the Nationals are 15-33 on the road this season but still favored over the Reds, who are 31-20 at home. WASHINGTON is 1-10 (-10.2 Units) against the money line on the road with a money line of -100 to -150 over the last 3 seasons. Cincy seems to be finding a groove again since returning from their recent lengthy road trip. They are 4-1 on the current homestand. Worthy underdog look.

(911) PHILADELPHIA (BLANTON) at (912) ST LOUIS (GARCIA) 8:15 PM
Line: St. Louis -145, Total: 8.5
SP WHIP Edge: St. Louis
BP WHIP Edge: St. Louis (LARGE)
Offense Edge: St. Louis
Recent Play Edge: St. Louis (LARGE)
Overall Analysis: As you can see from the edges, there isn’t a whole lot going for the Phillies in this third of a four game series versus the red-hot Cardinals. St. Louis has won seven straight games and is now 33-15 at home in 2010. Garcia has been stellar for the Cards as well, while Blanton owns an ugly 7.06 ERA on the road. With trade rumors also dogging the franchise, bet Philly at your own peril.

(913) NY METS (NIESE) at (914) ARIZONA (HAREN) 9:40 PM
Line: Arizona -120, Total: 8.5
SP WHIP Edge: Arizona
BP WHIP Edge: NY Mets (LARGE)
Offense Edge: None
Recent Play Edge: None
Overall Analysis: Arizona has taken the first two games of the 3-game series versus New York, who continues to struggle on the road. The Mets are just 19-29 this season away from Citi Field, allowing opponents to bat .290. Niese has been a good stopper for them though and has put together four solid starts in a row. After losing last night as -125 favorites, an interesting trend finds MANUEL is 23-9 (+14.7 Units) against the money line revenging a loss vs opponent as a road favorite as the manager of NY METS. Don’t be surprised to see New York salvage this one.

(915) SAN FRANCISCO (ZITO) at (916) LA DODGERS (BILLINGSLEY) 10:10 PM
Line: LA Dodgers -140, Total: 7.5
SP WHIP Edge: San Francisco
BP WHIP Edge: Los Angeles
Offense Edge: None
Recent Play Edge: San Francisco (HUGE)
Overall Analysis: San Francisco is among the hottest teams in baseball right now, having won 11 of 13 games. The Dodgers have lost six straight. Despite this and the fact that Zito is enjoying the better season over Billingsley, who has been rocked in his last two starts, the Dodgers are still somewhat heavy favorites. Strangely, the money seems to be moving towards Los Angeles. Value here is clearly on the confident Giants.

(917) TAMPA BAY (SHIELDS) at (918) BALTIMORE (BERGESEN) 12:35 PM
Line: Tampa Bay -200, Total: 9.5
SP WHIP Edge: Tampa Bay (LARGE)
BP WHIP Edge: Tampa Bay (LARGE)
Offense Edge: Tampa Bay
Recent Play Edge: None
Overall Analysis: One trend is very interesting to me in this game, BALTIMORE is 6-1 (+11.9 Units) against the money line vs. teams outscoring opp by 0.5 or more runs/game in the second half of the season this season. After last night’s huge come from behind, extra-inning win, it figures to be tough to lay the -220 against the O’s tonight, especially with a mediocre-of-late Shields getting the ball. Better plays on the board.

(919) LA ANGELS (PINEIRO) at (920) NY YANKEES (VAZQUEZ) 1:05 PM
Line: NY Yankees -175, Total: 9.0
SP WHIP Edge: NY Yankees
BP WHIP Edge: NY Yankees (LARGE)
Offense Edge: NY Yankees (LARGE)
Recent Play Edge: None
Overall Analysis: The Angels pounded Phil Hughes last night en route to a 10-2 upset as +220 dogs. Today’s revenge spot shows a strong FoxSheets system: Play Against - Home teams (NY YANKEES) - revenging a loss where opponent scored 10 or more runs, with a hot starting pitcher- ERA less than 3.00 over his last 10 games. (33-16 over the last 5 seasons.) (67.3%, +31 units. Rating = 4*). Early money seems to be landing with New York, but everything else I look at indicates a slight over-pricing here.

(921) CLEVELAND (WESTBROOK) at (922) MINNESOTA (LIRIANO) 1:10 PM
Line: Minnesota -220, Total: 8
SP WHIP Edge: Minnesota
BP WHIP Edge: Minnesota (LARGE)
Offense Edge: Minnesota (LARGE)
Recent Play Edge: Cleveland
Overall Analysis: Minnesota hasn’t been this large of a favorite since May 8th. The difference here and then is that the Twins were playing far better baseball at that point in the season. They are just 9-16 in their L25 games now including back-to-back losses in this series in which they have yielded 30 hits to the Indians. Cleveland has won six games in a row and is playing as good as it has all year. Liriano and the hosts simply aren’t worthy of this price today.

(923) TORONTO (RZEPCZYNSKI) at (924) KANSAS CITY (GREINKE) 2:10 PM
Line: Kansas City -155, Total: 8.5
SP WHIP Edge: Kansas City (LARGE)
BP WHIP Edge: Toronto
Offense Edge: None
Recent Play Edge: Toronto (LARGE)
Overall Analysis: Greinke opened as an exorbitant -170 favorite only to be bet down to -155 since. While he has pitched well of late, he certainly hasn’t commanded this type of price. Considering that the Jays have been getting it going of late with a 7-3 mark in their L10 games, including a 13-1 win last night, I’d be leery of laying the chalk here with the Royals. Good underdog spot.

(925) BOSTON (BUCHHOLZ) at (926) OAKLAND (GONZALEZ) 3:35 PM
Line: Boston -115, Total: 8
SP WHIP Edge: Boston
BP WHIP Edge: Boston
Offense Edge: None at this point
Recent Play Edge: Oakland
Overall Analysis: Boston and Oakland have split the first two games of their 3-game set, with each contest being decided by a run. Tonight’s pitching matchup is a good one, with Buchholz getting the slight edge if only for his recent prowess. At -120, the ******* Game Estimator and Power Ratings indicate that this game is underpriced for Boston by at least 25 cents, but savvy bettors have to give consideration to the bats missing from the Red Sox lineup.

(927) TEXAS (LEWIS) at (928) DETROIT (SCHERZER) 7:05 PM
Line: Detroit -105, Total: 9
SP WHIP Edge: Texas (LARGE)
BP WHIP Edge: Texas
Offense Edge: Texas
Recent Play Edge: Texas
Overall Analysis: What in the world is going on with the Tigers? Seven straight losses coming off a lengthy stretch in which they had gone 18-8. Pitching has been a huge problem in this current skid, as they have allowed opponents to score 6.1 RPG while hitting .294. Making matters worse today is that Detroit will be facing the Rangers’ Colby Lewis, who boasts an impressive 1.115 WHIP on the season and has had incredible command, striking out 112 hitters in just shy of 116 innings. Despite the fact that the two wins this week broke a 9-game losing streak in Detroit, you have to like the Rangers’ chances at a sweep.

(929) CHI WHITE SOX (FLOYD) at (930) SEATTLE (HERNANDEZ) 10:10 PM
Line: Seattle -135, Total: 6.5
SP WHIP Edge: Seattle
BP WHIP Edge: Chicago
Offense Edge: Chicago (LARGE)
Recent Play Edge: Chicago (HUGE)
Overall Analysis: Seattle is on an extended stretch of awful play, with just a 3-14 mark in its L17 games. I can NEVER advocate backing a team like that in the role of favorite, even if its ace starting pitcher is on the hill. The White Sox have surged to the top of the Central Division and wins over the last two nights have them in the position to sweep here. I’d honestly be surprised if they don’t.

Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

Brett Myers (7-6, 3.35), Houston Astros

Myers is on the radar of many teams in the trade market looking for a quality starter. The guy isn’t going to pitch no-hit ball every night but he tends to be a bullpen’s best friend.

“He came here with a reputation of being an innings eater and I think now he’s gone and almost taken it to another level,” said Houston manager Brad Mills. “The way he’s gone about it is very special.”

Myers hasn’t given up more than two runs in three July starts, compiling a 2-0 record with a nifty 2.08 ERA. True to form, the right-hander worked no fewer than 6.0 innings in each of those outings and is the only pitcher in MLB to go at least six innings in every start this year.

The under is 3-0 in Myers’ last three starts and he’s 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA against the Cubs this season.

Gavin Floyd (5-8, 4.10), Chicago White Sox

Chicago’s turnaround has directly coincided with Floyd’s resurgence. After accruing a 2-6 record through June 3, the Sox righty has gone 3-2 since but the team won five of those eight starts.

Floyd has not surrendered more than one earned run in seven of his previous eight outings. The start that he gave up more than one was a two-earned run performance. Even more impressive, Floyd has not allowed a single long ball in eight consecutive starts while striking out 46 hitters.

Slumping

Tommy Hanson (8-6, 4.19), Atlanta Braves

The ace of the Braves staff has been far from good over his last five outings. Hanson has gone 1-3 in that stretch, allowing 39 hits and 22 runs (19 earned). He didn’t get past the fourth inning in two of those starts.

“The biggest thing today was, I was just inconsistent with all my pitches,” Hanson said after a 9-3 loss to Milwaukee last Friday. “The second inning, just getting behind too many guys kind of got me in trouble there.”

Some analysts feel that Hanson is playing through a knee injury that could be affecting his pitching. The righty has a career 2-0 record with a 2.25 ERA versus the Padres.

Ted Lilly (3-4, 3.22), Chicago Cubs

Chicago’s lefty is auditioning for a job on a contender but his trade value continues to plummet. Lilly put together a pretty good line in his last outing (7.0 innings, 3 earned) but that performance followed a couple of stinkers.

In July, the southpaw is 0-2 with an 8.95 ERA. Lilly was tagged for nine earned runs, including four homers, in first start of the month. He didn’t get out of the fourth inning in his next outing against L.A. when he gave up seven total runs.

Lilly definitely looked better last Friday after recording 10 strikeouts but this guy is too hot and cold to get behind from a betting perspective.

Tips and Trends
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Houston Astros at Chicago Cubs [WGN | 2:20 PM ET]

Astros: Despite having the 6th worst record in baseball at 38-55 SU, the Astros are actually playing good baseball right now. Houston has won 6 of their past 10 games, and is quite likely going to be a spoiler team down the stretch of the regular season. Houston is -4.26 and -9.85 units both SU and on the RL respectively this season. Houston has dominated the Cubs this season, winning 5 of the 7 games played between the two teams this year. P Brett Myers will take the mound tonight, as he looks to keep up his fine form. Houston actually has a winning record when Myers is on the hill, as they are 10-9 this season. Myers is 7-6 this season, with an ERA of 3.35 and a WHIP of 1.28. The Astros are 6-2 in their last 8 games against a team with a losing record. Houston is 3-7 in their last 10 games during game 3 of a series. The Astros are 5-13 in their last 18 games against a starter with a WHIP less than 1.15. The Astros are 5-2 in Myers' last 7 starts against the National League Central. Houston is 1-4 in Myers' last 5 road starts against a team with a losing record. The Astros are 1-6 in Myers' last 7 road starts overall.

Astros are 11-1 last 12 Wednesday games.
Over is 5-2 last 7 road games against a team with a losing home record.

Key Injuries - SS Tommy Manzella (finger) is out.

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (Side of the Day)

Cubs (-145, O/U na): Right when it seemed that Chicago was gaining momentum, they laid an egg against the Houston Astros. Chicago quite simply can't help but trip over their own feet, as they are the most disappointing team in all of baseball. The Cubs are 42-52 SU this year, placing them 10.5 games behind the National League Central lead. Chicago is -20.88 and -11.45 units both SU and on the RL overall this year. P Ted Lilly might be making his final start at Wrigley Field, as he is likely to be traded to a contending team. Lilly is only 3-8 this season, despite an ERA of 4.07 and a WHIP of 1.12. The Cubs are 8-2 in their last 10 during game 3 of a series. Chicago is 6-2 in their last 8 games against a right-handed starter. The Cubs are 6-0 in Lilly's last 6 starts during game 3 of a series. The Cubs are 8-3 in Lilly's last 11 home starts against a team with a losing record. Chicago is 36-15 in Lilly's last 51 home starts overall. Chicago is 3-7 in Lilly's last 10 starts with 4 days of rest.
.

Cubs are 8-21 last 29 games against the National League Central.
Over is 4-0 last 4 games against a team with a losing record.

Key Injuries - None.

PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Los Angeles Angels at New York Yankees [1:05 PM ET]

Angels: Los Angeles needs to pick up their winning ways, as they are falling further and further behind Texas in the American League West division. The Angels are 50-45 SU this season, 5 games behind the Rangers. Los Angeles is +1.79 and -3.63 units both SU and on the RL respectively this season. The Angels appear to be buyers as the trading deadlines draws closer. Los Angeles could use more pitching, and an upgraded bat in the daily lineup. P Joel Pineiro has been brilliant of late, as the Angels keep winning his starts. For the season, Pineiro is 10-6 with an ERA of 3.95 and a WHIP of 1.27. The Angels are 4-1 in their last 5 road games against a team with a home winning percentage greater than .600%. The Angels are 6-2 in their last 8 Wednesday games. Los Angeles is 3-7 in their last 10 games against the American League East. The Angels are 1-6 in their last 7 road games against a right-handed starter. Houston is 6-0 in Pineiro's last 6 starts following a Quality Start in his last appearance. The Angels are 4-0 in Pineiro's last 4 starts against a team with a winning record. Houston is 8-0 in Pineiro's last 8 starts overall.

Angels are 1-7 last 8 road games.
Over is 7-3-1 last 11 road games.

Key Injuries - LF Chris Pettit (shoulder) is out.

PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Yankees (-172, O/U 9.5): New York continues to win, regardless of the distractions taking place off the field. New York has won 8 of their past 10 games, and stand 58-33 SU overall this season. The Yankees have the best record in baseball, and lead the American League East division by 2.5 games. New York is +8.44 and +12.64 units both SU and on the RL this season. The Yankees have split 6 games with the Angels so far this season. P Javier Vazquez will look to keep the form he's shown of late, as he has an ERA under 2.00 in his past 3 starts combined. Vazquez is 7-7 this season, with an ERA of 4.45 and a WHIP of 1.22. The Yankees are 7-1 in their last 8 games against the American League West. The Yankees are 45-13 in their last 58 home games against a right-handed starter. New York is 46-16 in their last 62 Wednesday games. New York is 3-7 in Vazquez's last 10 starts against the American League West. The Yankees are 1-5 in Vazquez's last 6 starts during game 2 of a series.

Yankees are 41-13 last 54 home games against a team with a winning record.
Over is 6-0 last 6 games against a team with a winning record.

Key Injuries - 1B Nick Johnson (wrist) is out.

PROJECTED SCORE: 4 (UNDER - Total of the Day)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Francisco Giants at Los Angeles Dodgers (-130, 7.5)

The Giants didn’t let a blatantly-missed call at home plate that cost them the game Sunday halt momentum. San Francisco has won 10 of its last 12 games and moved into second place in the NL West after a 5-2 win over L.A. on Monday.

"After [Sunday’s] deal, we didn't let that affect us," reliever Jeremy Affeldt said.

Trailing the Padres by four games going into Wednesday, the Jints are one of the hottest teams in baseball. They added to their archrival’s recent misery with Monday’s victory.

The Dodgers have dropped five consecutive games and are 4-8 over a 12-game stretch. Los Angeles has only scored 11 runs during the losing streak.

"You get what you earn. Right now we've given a lot away and we have to find a way of getting back on track," manager Joe Torre said. "We've left a lot of men on base lately."

San Fran is 3-0 in Barry Zito’s last three starts and averaged just under seven runs per in those contests. Look for Zito to keep the Manny-less Dodgers bats cool in warm Southern California.

Pick: Giants

Toronto Blue Jays at Kansas City Royals (-175, 8.5)

Yunel Escobar is making the most of his fresh start in Toronto. After being run out of Atlanta, the 27-year-old shortstop is hitting .471 with two homers and seven RBIs in four games with the Jays.

There must be something in the water up in Canada because Escobar was homerless in 261 at-bats with the Braves before being traded.

"A lot of people were asking him about it…doubting whether he could hit [a home run] or not," Toronto bench coach Nick Leyva said. "He knows he can."

It was only a matter of time before Escobar starting heating up. And after being inserted into a free-swinging lineup that looks for the long ball, his production should stay on the rise.

The Jays lead the majors in home runs (141) but suffered a bad beat Monday when closer Kevin Gregg blew his fourth save of the season. He is awful and cannot be trusted while Wednesday’s starter, Mark Rzepczynski, is a reliever getting his second spot start of the season.

Toronto should be able to touch up Zack Greinke for at least a few runs and the Royals will get theirs in what should be a double-digit game when it’s all said and done.

Pick: Over

This Day in Baseball
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On July 21 in Baseball History...

1921 - The Cleveland Indians and the New York Yankees combined for an American League record sixteen doubles as the Indians won 17-8. Cleveland had nine doubles and New York seven.

1945 - The Detroit Tigers and the Philadelphia Athletics played twenty-four innings and ended in a 1-1 tie. Les Mueller pitched 19 2/3 innings for the Tigers.

1956 - Brooks Lawrence of the Cincinnati Reds had his 13-game winning streak broken as Roberto Clemente's three-run homer led the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 4-3 victory.

1970 - San Diego's Clay Kirby held the New York Mets hitless for eight innings but was lifted for a pinch hitter by manager Preston Gomez. With the Padres trailing 1-0 with two out in the eighth, Gomez elected to go for the win instead of letting Kirby finish the game. The Padres lost the no-hitter and the game, 3-0.

1973 - Hank Aaron of Atlanta hit his 700th home run in the third inning of an 8-4 Braves loss to Philadelphia. Aaron connected on a 1-1 fastball off Phillies pitcher Ken Brett.

1975 - Joe Torre of the New York Mets grounded into four double plays in a 6-2 loss to the Houston Astros. Felix Millan had four singles but was wiped out each time by Torre.

Daily Sports Roundup: July 21

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Nats send their rookie ace out to the mound, while the Mariners host the White Sox, and the Dream search for a win in Washington.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League schedule for Wednesday has Tampa Bay at Baltimore, the Angels at the Yankees, Cleveland at Minnesota, Toronto at Kansas City, Boston at Oakland, Texas at Detroit, and the White Sox at Seattle. Gavin Floyd (5-8, 4.10 ERA) will get the ball for Chicago in that last game, while Felix Hernandez (7-6, 2.90 ERA) takes the mound for the Mariners. Righthander Floyd was tagged with a loss by the Twins in his last outing, surrendering four runs (one earned) over his five innings of work. Righthander Hernandez also lost his last start, giving up three runs on 10 hits over eight innings against the Angels. Hernandez struck out three batters in that defeat.

Meanwhile, the National League on Wednesday offers up Houston at the Cubs, Milwaukee at Pittsburgh, Colorado at Florida, San Diego at Atlanta, Philadelphia at St. Louis, the Mets at Arizona, San Francisco at the Dodgers, and Washington at Cincinnati. Stephen Strasburg (4-2, 2.03 ERA) will take on Bronson Arroyo (10-4, 3.96 ERA) in that Nationals/Reds contest. Righthander Strasburg picked up his second straight win last time out, holding the Marlins scoreless on four hits over six innings of work and fanning seven. Righthander Arroyo has won three straight starts; Arroyo beat the Rockies last time out, surrendering just two runs on five hits in five innings pitched.

Rounding out the Roundup . . .

As well, there's one game on the WNBA`s schedule for Wednesday, with Atlanta at Washington. The Dream (14-8 SU, 10-11-1 ATS) lost their third straight game last time out, falling 96-80 on the road to Connecticut. Angel McCoughtry picked up 27 points for Atlanta in that defeat. The Mystics (12-7 SU, 12-6-1 ATS) have lost two straight games heading into Wednesday`s matchup; they were beaten 61-59 by Chicago last time out. Bettor's best friend: Wednesday's wagering tips

Lines to keep an eye on

Rays at Orioles – The total for this game has jumped from an opener of 9 to 9.5 on most boards.

Indians at Twins – The home team opened as -170 favorites but that number has escalated to as high as -210. The total for the game has moved from 9 to 9.5.

Brewers at Pirates – An opening total of 9 has moved to 8.5.

Rangers at Tigers – Sharps have hit Detroit hard in this contest, moving the team from a +112 underdog to -110 chalk.

Atlanta Dream at Washington Mystics – The total for this game has been bet down from an opener of 162 to its current number, 159.5.

Weather report
(Forecasts are extracted from Weather.com the night before the game.)

Angels at Yankees – A 50 percent chance of rain is called for.

Blue Jays at Royals – The forecast projects a 40 percent chance of rain.

Rockies at Marlins – A 17 mph wind is expected to blow in from right-center field.

Nationals at Reds – A 30 percent chance of rain is called for. Tuesday’s game in this series was delayed because of rain.

Phillies at Cardinals – There is a 40-50 percent chance of precipitation.

Who’s hot

The Cardinals have won seven games in a row.

Going into Tuesday, the Giants were 8-2 over a 10-game span.

Who’s not

The Tigers have lost seven straight games.

Atlanta (WNBA) has lost five straight ATS and is 2-8 ATS in its last 10 games.

Seattle in 2-8 over its last 10 games.

Key stat

13 – Number of inside-the-park home runs in baseball this season.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

The Dodgers placed outfielder Manny Ramirez on the 15-day disabled list for the third time this season on Tuesday, this time for a right calf strain – the same calf strain also landed him on the DL in late April.. Ramirez was hurt in Friday's game against St. Louis and had just come off the 15-day disabled list Thursday because of a strained right hamstring. Ramirez, who is hitting .317 with eight home runs and 39 RBIs this season, was replaced on the 25-man roster by catcher Brad Ausmus.

Notable quotable

"We didn't think about it 'cause that's not what we're about. From college I was trying to figure out how to beat Larry Bird."

-- Magic Johnson, echoing Michael Jordan’s previous statement, about how he would never have looked to join forces with Jordan or Bird like LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh have in Miami.

Tips and notes

- Most casual bettors aren’t aware of the MLB game prop: Will there be a run scored in the first inning? The odds are usually favored toward the answer of “NO” and they get even higher if a couple of aces are on the mound. But if a bettor placed a one unit wager on every Rangers game this season he would be well in the black. In 94 Texas games, there has been a run scored in the first inning in 52 of them. As of today, the Rangers or their opponent had scored in the first inning of five of their last six games.

- The Atlanta Dream of the WNBA are a weary bunch. They’ve been on the road for a week and haven’t covered the spread in five straight tries while winning just one of those games. Head coach Marynell Meadors said the team was “fatigued” in its last game which led to “some bad offensive shot selections.” She also went on to say that “commercial travel makes it really tough.” That’s right, they ride on the same aircraft we do, not the charter planes real professional get transported around in. The Dream are just 4-point dogs in Washington Wednesday and could be longing to get out of D.C.

- Toronto will trot out spot starter Marc Rzepczynski Wednesday versus the Royals. Rzepczynski will be pitching on three days' rest after making a 0.2-inning relief appearance Saturday. Before that, he hadn’t pitched since July 10 and came out of the bullpen for 0.1 innings of work. The Jays called up Rzepczynski from Triple-A on July 7 for a start and he went 5.2 innings with four earned runs. This guy probably doesn’t know his head from his feet right now and could be out of sync with this unusual pitching schedule.

Wednesday's six-pack

-- Aramis Ramirez hit three HRs, knocked in seven runs as Cubs rallied from 6-0 down to pull away from the Astros, 14-7.

-- Pirates scored nine runs in bottom of first, but Milwaukee's starting pitcher Bush still pitched four innings. Bucs hung on for 11-9 win.

-- Jamie Moyer is hurt, Kendrick got sent to minors and Phillies look as if they're about to make a big trade. They're sinking in NL East.

-- Cardinals still haven't lost since the All-Star break.

-- Indians are suddenly on fire-- they've won their last six games.

-- Wild Card races........
AL-- Rays 56-37, lead Red Sox by 3.5 games. Angels by 6.5.
NL-- Reds 53-42, lead Rockies by a game, Giants by 1.5, Dodgers by 2.5, Mets by 3.5, Phillies by four games.

Wednesday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind........

13) Clayton Kershaw/Joe Torre got tossed from Giant-Dodger game in the 7th inning, after Kershaw hit his second batter of the game; it proved to be costly, as interim manager Mattingly screwed up a rule in top of ninth inning, which forced him to remove closer Broxton, as Giants rallied for three runs in the ninth to escape LA with a 7-5 win.

12) Mattingly visited Broxton on the mound, turned to leave, took couple of steps off the mound, then went back to the mound, which technically is two visits to the mound, so the pitcher has to leave. Torres, Sandoval followed with hits, and the Dodgers suffered a damaging loss.

11) Lets compare two big leaguers who play the same position.........
Player A: .338, 7 HR, 37 RBI, 52 runs, .391 OB%, .916 OPS
Player B: .271, 8 HR, 44 RBI, 62 runs, .335 OB%, .719 OB%

Player A is three years younger; if you were looking at free agent SSs, which one would you give more money to?

10) Kevin Kouzmanoff drilled a game-winning single to right at 1:37am as the 48-48 A's came back from down 4-0 to beat the Red Sox. Balkin' Bob Davidson called a balk in the 10th inning that was huge in the outcome.

9) Strange stat on Lou Piniella; he made his big league debut in 1964 for the Orioles, playing in four games. He wound up winning Rookie of the Year five years and three teams later, for the '69 Royals. Without the big expansion (four teams) in '69, we might never have heard of Sweet Lou.

8) Carlos Silva has to be hurting; he's allowed 24 baserunners, 11 runs in his last two starts, getting a total of seven outs. In his seven starts before that, Silva was 3-2, 2.31. Something has to be bothering him.

7) On days when Matt Holliday is rested, Albert Pujols has to be treated like Barry Bonds; you can't pitch to him in any big spot, unless bases are loaded. he's just too good, especially if Holliday is sitting out.

6) 17 of 32 NFL teams aren't going away for training camp this year; as recently as nine years ago, 26 of 31 NFL teams went away for camp.

5) On June 11, Jets slashed the prices of 9,000 unsold PSLs, some by as much as 50%; they claim to have since sold almost 75% of those PSLs. It is going to be weird to see empty seats in the Meadowlands this fall.

4) NFL Media Guide always has defending champs on the cover; have to admit its very cool to see the Saints on this year's cover.

3) When you're staying in a hotel, do you ever wonder who was in your room before you, or who will be there next? I think of these things.

2) In #11 up above, Player A is Rafael Furcal; Player B, Derek Jeter.

1) How good a player was Wally Pipp, that he played ahead of one of the game's greats, Lou Gehrig? Pipp played 15 years in big leagues, hit .281 with 148 career triples, 90 career homers. Weren't many HRs back then. Pipp placed 8th/15th/15th in MVP voting in three different years. There were no All-Star games back when he played. Pipp wound up his career playing for the Reds for three years after Gehrig displaced him.
