Jonathan Stewart - RB - Panthers The Charlotte Observer confirms that "all indications are" Jonathan Stewart (heel) and DeAngelo Williams (ankle) will be fully recovered from their offseason surgeries by the start of camp.
Williams was a full participant toward the end of pre-camp workouts. Stewart hasn't practiced, but NFL.com reported last week that he's been medically cleared. The Observer expects the Panthers to "rely on the duo more than ever" while breaking in a new starting quarterback and No. 2 wide receiver. July 23

The Panthers have publicly downplayed Williams' injury, but he was in significant pain after appearing to sprain or at least tweak the foot late in Sunday's win over San Francisco. He's probably headed for a questionable tag. With a date against St. Louis' 16th-ranked run defense on tap, Jonathan Stewart owners may finally have the opportunity they've been waiting for.

DeAngelo Williams - RB - Panthers According to Darin Gantt of the Rock Hill Herald, DeAngelo Williams (ankle) is "not necessarily" out for Week 8 despite missing Wednesday's practice.
We could've told you as much, but the fact that Carolina's top beat reporter doesn't have a good idea of Williams' status confirms that it's totally up in the air. Fantasy owners will just have to monitor practice reports to figure out the likelihood of Williams' availability. If he doesn't practice by Friday, it's a good bet that he'll be inactive agt St. Louis. Jonathan Stewart, then, would start. October 27 - 3:51 p.m. ET

Fox called Williams "day-to-day," declining to predict if his starter would play. "If I knew that I'd probably be doing something else, like at the racetrack," said Fox, suggesting that the call would be made "an hour and a half before kickoff." At this point, our best guess is that Jonathan Stewart will start with Williams sitting out.

Jonathan Stewart owners finally get the break they've waiting for, and Mike Goodson should see increased action as a passing-down specialist. Though Stewart has struggled this season, he's worthy of RB1 consideration considering his history (150.3 yards per game) as a fill-in starter. Williams never practiced this week, which leaves his status up in the air heading into Week 9 against the Saints.

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>Williams was seen "hobbling through" the locker room Monday after being inactive for Week 8. Jonathan Stewart didn't make much of a case for more carries going forward against the Rams, managing just 38 total yards on 15 touches. The starting job is likely to be Williams' when he returns, but he doesn't appear close to 100 percent. Carolina hosts New Orleans in Week 9.

Williams is aiming for a return next week at Tampa Bay. Jonathan Stewart will draw a second straight start against a Saints defense allowing the 12th-most fantasy points to opposing backs. Considering the Panthers' run-blocking woes and Stewart's 2.8 yards per carry average, he's only a RB2 option this week. Unless Stewart breaks out, Williams is a lock to return to the feature back role.

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>Jonathan Stewart will start against the Saints. Williams is hitting waiver wires in many leagues, but Stewart so far hasn't played well enough to steal the feature back job. D-Will is worth picking up if he's been dropped. If J-Stew continues to struggle, Williams could be a fantasy asset down the stretch of the season. He needs to finish strong in a contract year.

Goodson said Wednesday that he has been told that he will start at running back for the Panthers Sunday against Tampa Bay, the Gaston Gazette reports.Recommendation: DeAngelo Williams (foot), Jonathan Stewart (head) and Tyrell Sutton (ankle) all sat out practice Wednesday, but the fact that Goodson has already been informed that he will start this week, suggests that Panthers could be without all three of their banged-up backs this week. If that's the case, Goodson could be busy against a Bucs' defense that has given up an average of 147 yards on the ground thus far. Only Denver and Buffalo are allowing more rushing yards per game.

Mike Goodson will get the Week 10 start at Tampa, but Williams will retake his job versus the Ravens the following Sunday. While the Panthers don't get a truly favorable running-game matchup until Week 15 against Arizona, Williams should be picked up if he's been dropped in fantasy leagues. He'll return in the feature back role for the final seven weeks of the season.

Williams never even practiced this week after reportedly aiming for a return against the Bucs. Mike Goodson has taken all of the first-team reps in practice this week and will start against one of the softest run defenses in the league. Josh Vaughan and Andre Brown will back up Goodson and perhaps play in short-yardage situations.

DeAngelo Williams out for season with the foot, according to ESPN.

I just missed picking up Goodson in my league by 5 minutes.

Williams finishes with career lows across the board, even dating back to his days behind DeShaun Foster on the depth chart. The contract-year back presumably had a setback with his foot injury, which was only revealed to be a sprain. He was shut down with seven games left, so it's hard to imagine that the injury wasn't something more serious. Williams, 27, is no lock to return to penny-pinching Carolina in 2011. The Panthers don't figure to let him walk in free agency, but could franchise tag him and place him on the trade block to get something in return.

Tyrell Sutton (ankle) is also missing practice once again, leaving Mike Goodson as the feature back for the second straight week. Considering the opponent, a quarterback with just four practices under his belt, and the presence of Josh Vaughan at the goal-line, Goodson belongs on fantasy benches in Week 11.
