I don't know if you guys realize it, but we're pretty close to entering a new era in the NBA. No, not the superteam era kicked off by the Miami Heat, though that's happening too. Rather, I'm talking about a Shaquille O'Neal(notes)-free NBA for the first time since 1993. That's pre-Justin Bieber being born, people. It's kind of like a big deal.
And while we knew this day would come eventually, no one figured it would be next season. However, now that the Atlanta Hawks are signing Josh Powell, The Diesel might end up without a team. From ESPN's Ryan Corazza:
As ESPN's Marc Stein reported earlier this week, the Hawks were the only team with a "live" interest in Shaq, but with them signing another center in Powell, it seems unlikely they'd also bring Shaq on board as well.
Bottom line: It's looking like Shaq needs to bite the bullet and drop his asking price -- as well as his request for healthy playing time -- or he may not be getting a contract at all for next season.
It's hard to even imagine what an NBA without the league's biggest goofball would be like, but after scoring just a shade more than 600 points last year it wouldn't be terribly surprising. Shaq's one remaining skill is being huge, and while he's very good at that, he doesn't have a lot left to offer. Some post scoring, sure, but that often comes at the expense of a free-flowing offense. And let's not even consider defense, since Shaq doesn't.
[Rewind: Shaq denied access to the White House]
That being said, odds are that someone will bite the bullet and add O'Neal. He'd have to agree to come off the bench, but he'd also be great at that since most backup centers aren't that good. Furthermore, he's always a good pickup from a marketing standpoint. Everyone knows who he is, and lots of people like him even if he does steal television show ideas on the reg.
Of course, if O'Neal ends up unemployed he'll go down as one of the more successful players in history. He's currently seventh in all-time scoring, has four championships, an MVP and 15 All-Star appearances. Pretty great career, even if it could have been exponentially better considering his size and athleticism.
However, the true tragedy if O'Neal is forced to retire is that he will not have had the chance to wear every purple jersey in the league. I mean, he looked so good in his Lakers and Suns uniforms that he should really have a shot to don the purple and black of the Sacramento Kings. Such a flattering color.

Looks like it could happen, which is ridiculous, because we all know he could help every single team in the league, even if it's just coming off of the bench.....

Problem is he wants too much money right now. But I'm sure his asking price will eventually come down before pre-season starts.

He would certainly but some butts in the seats in New Orleans......and once Paul leaves they'll need somebody to do that.

Depends on how much he will play for. If he insists on $10M or more he may have trouble finding a team that will pay that cap brealing amount. Lets face it Sgaq is an over the hill future Hall of Famer. A team like the Nets will maybe give him $5 of 6Million as a draw for their home games and part of their new image under their billionaire Russian owner.

Obviously that is not chicken feed and if he gets an offer in that range he shiuld take it and try to get some incentive clauses included like (if it's The Nets) make the playoffs and he receives an extra million, advance to the 2nd round and another million. Make the All Star team and earn a million (long shot I know) etc...

Obviously Shaq is set for life so it boils down to does he want to play for a figure that won't break a team in a market where average players are making ridiculas money.

Talk of Penny being added to Heat..with Shaq also maybe resign Dennis Scott..but anyway my opinion is the man is thru..as big as he is hes a liabilty..cant play for stretches of more than 4 minutes at a time and when he gets to the line its an adventure..has problems defensively and commits stupid fouls..great career..all I will remember though is..CAN YOU DIG IT???

Atlanta no doubt I'm thinking.

If, however, he does retire. Under what team does he retire under? At first thought I was thinking Lakers but after some time I think it would be Orlando.

He should sign with the Heat for alot less money and ride the coattails of endorsement money coming that way.

A motivated Shaq for ONE final season with a shot at the Lakers would make good drama and good TV ratings. Phil Jackson's last year and the Lakers talent vs the Heats talent and drama coming from all angles would just pull in the kind of NBA revenue a guy like Stern would love.

Endorsements? Shaq is already well known enough for whatever endorsements are appropriate. Really can't se how playing there one season would suddenly give him a ton of endorsements he couldn't otherwise get. He'd have to battle the big three for endorsement chances. He'd get more endorsements in a new city, if that's what he's looking for. No way he's playing anywhere for the minimum.

don't know why but I always enjoy watching the over the hill stars denying that they are getting too old to be a star anymore. Guess it is one of the first times in their lives that they have to face reality.

The Heat don't want him, especially LeBron James who preferred the up-tempo of the offense when Shaq wasn't on the floor, and he squabbled with Clevelan'd coach about it.

Shaquille O'Neal - C - Cavaliers

Hawks beat writer Sekou Smith quotes one Hawks official as saying, "The Shaq situation is not a dead subject for us. We are still exploring the possibilities."
Shaq only wants to play for a contender and is looking for approximately $8 million per season, though he'll likely have to accept much less. The Hawks are one of the few teams to have consistently mulled the idea of signing the veteran center. Jul. 25
