Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Red Sox at Seattle Mariners (+135, 7.5)

Things finally boiled over for the reeling Mariners. The club is just 4-16 over its last 20 games and manager Don Wakamatsu and infielder Chone Figgins got into each other’s business on Friday night.

In the middle of the fifth inning, Wakamatsu took Figgins out of because for failing to back up Jack Wilson on a ball that got away from the shortstop.

“I didn’t think there was much effort on that backup, and I made a decision to take him out of the ballgame,” Wakamatsu told the Seattle Times after the 2-1 loss to Boston. “One thing people have got to understand is that everybody in that dugout cares. And tempers fly a little bit.”

Now does Figgins care about winning or about getting pulled in an embarrassing fashion from a ballgame?

Bettors might think this spillover would lead to some inspired play but we’re not sure if the M’s have strong enough leadership in their clubhouse to expect that kind of response.

Pick: Red Sox

St. Louis Cardinals at Chicago Cubs (+110, N/A)

The Cubs are well below .500 and fighting for third place the NL Central. They’re well behind the Cards and Reds for the division lead or Wildcard spot but St. Louis manager Tony La Russa isn’t ready to write of the Baby Bears.

"The only time that you would ever say that a team is not in the race is if you're talking about the last six weeks or even maybe the last month,'' La Russa told the Chicago Sun-Times on Friday. ''But look what the White Sox did. They got back in it in two weeks. The Cubs have a nice club, and Lou does a really good job.''

Chicago is trying its best to vindicate La Russa’s assessment. The Cubbies are 6-3 in their last nine games after taking the first two from the Cards in the weekend series.

We’re not buying the Cubs pulling off any type of miraculous hot streak to get them back in the NL Central race. Chicago’s a flawed team that has swept one home series – and that was a two-gamer back May – all season.

Pick: Cards

Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

Jair Jurrjens (3-3, 4.25 ERA), Atlanta Braves

This young righthander’s productive return has been a huge lift to the Braves five-man rotation. Jurrjens, Atlanta’s most consistent arm in 2009, went on the shelf for two months at the start of the season but he seems to have put the injury behind him.

The Braves are 4-0 in his four appearances since rejoining the big club at the end of June, and he sports a 2.19 ERA over the same period.

Daisuke Matsuzaka (7-3, 4.29 ERA), Boston Red Sox

Dice-K’s control has been an issue since the talented righty first joined the big leagues. This season has been no different (17 walks in his first 34 2/3 innings).

But the Japanese import has shown better accuracy recently. He’s walked just two batters – compared to 11 strikeouts – in his last two starts and the Red Sox are 5-2 overall in his last seven trips to the bump.

Slumping

Kevin Slowey (8-5, 4.94 ERA), Minnesota Twins

Minnesota’s pitching staff looks pretty ugly these days outside of Carl Pavano and Francisco Liriano. Kevin Slowey is one of three starting hurlers who've been consistently terrible over the last month and a half.

Slowey’s 8.37 ERA over his seven starts is only half the problem for Twins backers. Minnesota’s bullpen routinely has to work long innings on Slowey’s scheduled starts because he’s pitched less than six innings in four of those seven trips to the mound.

The Twinkies are 0-4 and the over is 3-1 in his last four appearances.

Anthony Lerew (1-4, 8.54 ERA), Kansas City Royals

It stands to reason that the fifth man on the Royals’ rotation is one of the worst starting pitchers in baseball. Lerew is so bad he makes Brian Bannister and Kyle Davis look like aces.

The 27-year-old righty has allowed 18 earned runs in his last nine innings pitched. That’s an 18.00 ERA for those of you scoring at home.

He’s pitched less than three innings in each of his last two starts and the over has cashed in his last three appearances.

This Day in Baseball
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On July 25 in Baseball History...

1930 - The Athletics pull off triple steals twice in one game against the Indians. This is the only time in Major League history that this has occurred.

1941 - Forty-one-year-old Lefty Grove wins his 300th game as the Boston Red Sox defeat the Cleveland Indians 10-6 before a Fenway Ladies Day crowd of 16,000. Though he will make six more starts, this will be Grove's last career win.

1956 - Brooklyn right fielder Carl Furillo is the first Dodger player to homer in Jersey City, as the Dodgers lose to the Reds, 2-1.

1959 - Fidel Castro supporters bring a halt to the International League contest between the Rochester Red Wings and Havana Sugar Kings with random gunshots from the grandstand. Red Wings third base coach Frank Verdi and Havana shortstop Leo Cardenas both suffer minor flesh wounds. The team is pulled from the field and Havana cancels the rest of the homestand, eventually relocating the franchise in Newark for the 1960 season.

1961 - Roger Maris hits four home runs, tying the American League record for a doubleheader (at least one in each game), as New York beats Chicago, 5-1, and 12-0. Mickey Mantle also homers off Frank Baumann in the first game. He ends the day with thirty-eight home runs to forty for Maris.

1967 - Race riots in Detroit force postponement of a Tigers-Orioles game. The games scheduled for the June 26-27 are shifted to Baltimore.

1972 - The National League wins the All-Star Game 4-3 at Atlanta behind hometown hero Hank Aaron's two-run home run and Joe Morgan's 10th-inning RBI single. It is the seventh time the classic has gone into extra innings; the Nationals have won all seven.

1977 - Pete Rose singles in the fourth inning of the Reds 9-8 loss to the Cardinals. It is Rose's 2,881st career hit, enabling him to surpass Frankie Frisch as the all-time leader among switch-hitters.

1998 - Baltimore's ageless wonder Jesse Orosco pitches in his 1,000th career game.

Sunday Night Baseball: Cardinals at Cubs
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Louis Cardinals at Chicago Cubs (+110)

The Cubs look to pull off a series sweep when they host the Cardinals in the finale of a three-game set at Wrigley Field this evening.

What goes up…

St. Louis recently put together an eight-game winning streak, their longest in six years. Now, they’ve started to nose-dived.

After a major-league record 2,370 games without suffering consecutive shutouts, the Cards were blanked twice in succession, 2-0 at home Wednesday against Philadelphia and 5-0 here against the Cubs in the series opener Friday.

To make matters worse, the Cardinals had only singles in both games.

Saturday’s 6-5 defeat extended the Redbirds losing skid to three. A loss tonight would match a St. Louis season-high four-game losing streak this campaign.

"We were in contention going into the break, so it's not like we can fall asleep at the wheel," said manager Tony La Russa.

"We teach the more pressure, the better we are," La Russa went on to say. "We had a pretty good first six weeks. I just think sometimes you struggle. We had some good periods, a sluggish period, and another good period. We just have to maintain it. It's not automatic."

The Cardinals are 4-1 in games off three straight losses this season.

Just chilling

With all the talk that the Cardinals are primed to make a move for Houston Astros ace Roy Oswalt, La Russa tossed some cold water on all the trade rumors.

"There are a lot of clubs out there looking for help," La Russa said. "Our assumption is that we are not going to get any, so we'll just win with what we got."

With starting pitchers Kyle Lohse and Brad Penny still on the disabled list, it appears that Oswalt would be the perfect complement to Adam Wainwright, Jaime Garcia and tonight’s hurler, Chris Carpenter.

That trio has combined for 47 of the team's 60 quality starts.

"We just do the best we can," La Russa said. "Right now, there's uncertainty about Penny, but Lohse is really making progress. So with Lohse out, do we need another pitcher? I don't know. In the meantime, the games count."

Here we go again

The Cubs haven’t been above .500 the entire season.

They hired a new hitting coach in the offseason, yet some of the best hitters from seasons past are having career-low numbers.

But now, after going 6-3 after the All-Star break, dreams of a second-half surge are surfacing once again in Chicago.

To reiterate from our note last Sunday, Lou Piniella's Cubs always pick it up in the second half of the season.

In 2007, Piniella led the Cubs to a 41-34 second half record; in 2008, a 40-26 record; and in 2009, a 40-33 record. Yes, Lou Piniella coaches the Cubs well in the second half.

Sure, there are immediate concerns. Carlos Silva has been struggling in his last two starts, giving up 11 runs in just 2 and 1/3 innings, hot-headed Carlos Zambrano is on the suspended list and the bullpen - sans Sean Marshall - is creaky.

The good news is Tom Gorzelanny has gone 3-0 with a 2.38 ERA since Zambrano went schitzo. Derrek Lee owns a seven-game hitting streak and Tyler Colvin has launched three home runs in his last 16 at-bats.

Toss in Aramis Ramirez’ .400 batting average with nine home runs, 24 RBIs, and 18 runs since July 5 and you can understand the optimism that now permeates this clubhouse.

Could the send Lou Piniella off in style or is this just another wet dream soon to dry up? Stay tuned.

Torre pines

Speaking of Piniella, Los Angeles Dodger skipper Joe Torre’s name has emerged as a possible candidate to replace the retiring Cubs’ manager at season's end.

"I don't want to rule anything out… but you're certainly crazy if you don't listen to things,” Torre responded.

Torre is in the third and final year of his contract with the Dodgers, and during spring training he asked the club to put off discussions on a possible extension. He turned 70 last week, and has said he'll decide his future in the next month or so.

"I enjoy this organization (the Dodgers), I really have," Torre said. "Has there been some stuff going on, distractions and all that? But, hell, after coming from New York, that's no big deal, distraction-wise."

Matching serves

Ryan Dempster toes the rubber against Chris Carpenter in a matchup of quality righthanders this evening.

The Cubs are 9-11 behind Dempster this season but have emerged victorious in each of his last three starts.

Dempster is 6-10 in his career team starts versus St. Louis but is 4-1 at home against the Redbirds. He is also 11-4 in his last 15 team starts during the month of July.

The Cardinals are 15-6 in Carpenter’s 21 starts this year, but just 5-4 away.

The All-Star staff ace is 13-5 in 18 career team starts against the Cubs, including 7-4 at Wrigley Field. Carpenter also enjoys hurling in July, going 16-4 in his last 20 team starts.

Daily Sports Roundup: July 25

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Mariners play host to the Red Sox, the Cubs take on the rival Cardinals, and the drivers of NASCAR compete at Indy in the Brickyard 400.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

On the American League schedule for Sunday it'll be Tampa Bay at Cleveland, Toronto at Detroit, Kansas City at the Yankees, Minnesota at Baltimore, the White Sox at Oakland, the Angels at Texas, and Boston at Seattle. Daisuke Matsuzaka (7-3, 4.29 ERA) will take on Doug Fister (3-6, 3.56 ERA) in that Red Sox/Mariners matchup. Righthander Matsuzaka beat the Athletics last time out, limiting them to just one run on two hits over 6 2-3 innings of work. Righthander Fister is coming off a loss to the White Sox in which he gave up three runs on seven hits over six innings of work.

The National League schedule for Sunday has Atlanta at Florida, Colorado at Philadelphia, San Diego at Pittsburgh, Cincinnati at Houston, Washington at Milwaukee, the Mets at the Dodgers, San Francisco at Arizona, and St. Louis at the Cubs. Chris Carpenter (11-3, 3.05 ERA) is slated to take the hill for the Cardinals on Sunday night; righthander Carpenter dazzled the Phillies in his last trip to the mound, giving up just one run on five hits over his eight innings of work. The Cubs are expected to counter with Ryan Dempster (8-7, 3.70 ERA) on Sunday; righthander Dempster took a no-decision vs. the Astros in his last start, allowing seven runs (four earned) in five innings.

Roaring around the track . . .

The drivers of the Sprint Cup Series will take on Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday in the Brickyard 400. Jeff Gordon and Kevin Harvick are the 13/2 Vegas co-favorites to take the checkered flag at Indy on Sunday; Gordon has won four Cup races on the track in his career, while Harvick won there in 2003. Tony Stewart, who has two career Indy wins, is next at 6/1 odds, while two-time defending Brickyard champion Jimmie Johnson sits at 15/2 odds to visit victory lane. Kyle Busch (17/2) and Kurt Busch (9/1) round out the top race contenders, with Mark Martin listed at 10/1 odds for Sunday.

Meanwhile, the drivers of Formula 1 will hit the track at the Hockenheimring on Sunday in the German Grand Prix. Sebastian Vettel is pegged as the 15/8 oddsmakers' favorite for Sunday, with Red Bull teammate Mark Webber just behind him on the list at 3/1; Webber won the series' last race, the British Grand Prix, and he's the defending champ at the German Grand Prix. Drivers championship leader Lewis Hamilton is next at 4/1 odds, with Fernando Alonso at 11/2, and Jenson Button at 10/1. Button sits 12 points behind McLaren teammate Hamilton in second place in the drivers championship, and the two drivers hold a 278-249 lead on Red Bull in the constructors championship so far.

Rounding out the Roundup . . .

As well, there are two WNBA games on the schedule for Sunday, with New York at Atlanta and Tulsa at Seattle. The Storm (19-2 SU, 13-6-2 ATS) ride a 10-game winning streak into Sunday's matchup with the Shock, getting past San Antonio 80-74 when they last hit the hardwood; Lauren Jackson poured in 21 points for Seattle in that victory. Seattle also knocked off Tulsa 83-72 when the teams last met on June 27. Jackson had 24 points for Seattle in that victory, and Scholanda Robinson scored 16 points for Tulsa.

Sunday's six-pack

-- Happy 57th birthday, Biff Pocoroba.

-- Magglio Ordonez broke his ankle, is out 6-8 weeks for the Tigers.

-- Jon Lester retired the first 16 Seattle hitters, but Patterson dropped an easy fly ball, then Saunders homered, as Seattle woke up late, beating Red Sox, 5-1, dropping Boston four games behind the WC leading Rays.

-- Mat Latos returned from his sneezing-induced injury to beat Pirates 9-2 in Pittsburgh; he allowed two runs in six innings.

-- Mets have lost games in 14/13 innings this week; Frankie Rodriguez didn't pitch in either one. Tough times for the Metropolitans.

-- Lane Kiffin hired away the Tennessee Titans' RB coach, without first asking Titans' coach Jeff Fisher, which is a courtesy in coaching. Fisher (a USC alum) isn't happy and said so. Kiffin continues to prove that at every turn, he's a complete jerk.

Sunday's List of 13: My ever-changing list of Life's Basic Truths

We always hear how teams go back to basics when things aren't good; in my life, I keep a list with me at all times, with reminders about things I've considered to be important over the years. This isn't a complete list (I've got to keep some hole cards secret......lol) but here are some of them

13) Time is more precious than money. Most people aren't going to run out of money; eventually, everyone will run out of time.

12) Everyone is more attractive when they're smiling.

11) Doing things you love keeps you younger.

10) Always do/be your best; you never know who is watching. If you're prepared when opportunity knocks, great things can happen.

9) Doing the difficult things first actually makes life easier.

8) Its almost impossible to learn when you're talking; want to get smarter? Then shut up for a few minutes and listen.

7) Always give yourself options; put yourself in a position to succeed. If you pursue your passions, it'll keep you invested, and it makes getting up in the morning a whole hell of a lot easier.

6) Learn from your successes and failures; take notes on what happened and why you think it happemed. Scenarios repeat themselves.

5) Respect is earned, not given. Nothing worthwhile is free.

4) Its rarely a bad idea to think before you speak.

3) Karma's a bitch; do the right thing, especially if nobody's watching.

2) It doesn't cost anything extra to be nice, but never let people mistake kindness for weakness. Always stand up for yourself.

1) As Robin Williams said to Matt Damon in the classic movie Good Will Hunting: "Follow your heart, son. You'll do fine."
