As a lifetime Giants fan, it's killing me to watch the Giants playing so well now but gaining little ground on the Padres. What do you think? Do the Padres hang on and win the NL West or do the Giants catch them?

i believe the giants are leading wild card right now, so you have that going for you. i really think the pads are gonna tail off some in 2nd half. we'll see...

2 very similar teams Ted..very good pitching and poor offense..I'm hoping my pads add another bat but otherwise I have no idea who will win this division, I think it will come down to the wire

The Giants offense is improved with Posey and Sanchez for the second half.

They might pick up a bat the second half.

i do not think the pades win the west...as I do not think they will be adding an impact bat before the trade deadline.

But more important that that... the Padres have a very difficult Sept. schedule. As of this minute, they have one series against a team w/ a losing record...the Cubs. They do not have any cupcake series' vs the likes of the Pirates in Sept.

You keep getting bad news OMT....Padres are gonna win this thing with the offensive upgrades they made. Ludwick coming over helps tremendously. Tejada as well. Padres making moves to keep that lead locked up...

Yeah, I know. But they lost yesterday! @):)

The big problem is they are 4 games ahead of the Giants in the loss column so the current 2.5 game edge is a bit misleading.

I do really think they will hold on. And that's only because I don't believe in the other teams that are chasing them right now. If it were another division, I'd probably say they are going to get caught, but not in the NL West.

the giants will catch the padres, just too tough to lead most of the year....too much pressure for a team expected to have been on the bottom of the division

Pitching wins, and the Pads have it.
SD wins the division by two.

the cardinals handed the Padres a silver slugger bat in Ludwick...

Lilly, Oswalt, & Haren were acquired for much less than what the Cardinals gave away to land Westbrook...shocking trade & the worst trade made...hard to believe a club could get fleeced like that..

I still think the Giants win the West...

I, like everyone, was skeptical of the Pads. But the more I watch them, the more I realize that they have a very solid team. While they may not be true title contenders, they have a very good shot at winning the West.

With the luck the Padres are having, no one is going to catch them.

i like the giants, good mix of veterans and youngsters. lots of interchangeable pieces and clutch hitters. think they will win the west, then anything could happen with their starting pitching. only question is bullpen, especially closer.

You are correct that the key is the bullpen but not the closer Wilson as he leads the NL in saves with 31 and has only blown 2 all year, however the weakness is in the set up men, which is what GM Sabean tried to address before the trade deadline by picking up lefter hander Vaquez from the Pirates and right hander Ramirez from the Red Sox. Casilla is horrible and I gringe everytime he comes in and Mota and Romo can be erratic. With the Giants starting pitching, if innings 7 and 8 can be locked down, the Giants will overtake the Padres IMHO. Time will tell!
