------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Baltimore Orioles at Toronto Blue Jays (-210, 8)

It’s hard to put into words exactly how bad the Orioles are on the road this season, but let’s try.

Baltimore, 2-8 over its past 10 overall, is just 13-34 on the road this season, the second worst mark in the Majors. The Orioles are hitting.252 on the road this year, but have a horrific .306 on-base percentage. The absurd lack of base runners is especially evident as the team has mustered a meager 165 runs in 47 away games.

"It's not the same as far as starting the season with the opportunity that we had,'' Orioles outfielder Luke Scott told the Baltimore Sun, "but I'm excited to see what we can do with the situation we've been dealt and how we can make the most of it."

But excitement doesn’t score runs. The Orioles are 0-9 against the Blue Jays this season, with the defeats coming by an average of 3.2 runs per game. Also, eight of the team’s nine meetings this season have fallen under the total.

Pick: Blue Jays

Cincinnati Reds at Milwaukee Brewers (-135, 8)

The Brewers aren’t a great team, but they can hit the hell out of right-handed pitching.

Milwaukee is third in the Majors with 364 runs scored against righties, hitting .266 against them with a whopping 96 home runs. The power in the lineup has been a huge reason the team has stayed within striking distance of .500 and is 7-3 in its past 10 overall.

And guess who the Brew Crew faces on the bump? Edinson Volquez.

The Red’s power pitcher was on the disabled list for most of the season before making his debut two weeks ago. In two starts he is 1-1 with a putrid 7.56 ERA and a 1.68 WHIP. Oh, and he’s right-handed.

Volquez’s only start in Miller Park last year also was a disaster. In just five innings he gave up six earned runs on seven hits, including two home runs with four walks against four strikeouts.

Pick: Brewers

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

Carl Pavano (12-6, 3.26 ERA), Minnesota Twins

It’s amazing how Pavano had so many injury issues in New York City, since he is developing into one of the strongest workhorses in the American League.

Pavano has tossed two straight complete games – yielding only two runs and 12 hits while striking out 10 over 18 innings – to raise his total to five on the season, the second most in the AL. He also has amassed a staggering 143.2 innings this season, the third-most in the league.

The right-hander has a microscopic, 1.01 WHIP, and has posted eight quality starts over his past 10 outings. The Twins also are huge fans when he takes the bump as the team is 8-2 in his previous 10 starts.

John Lackey (9-5, 4.36 ERA), Red Sox

Lackey was the No. 1 starter on the Angels last year but has looked nothing like a staff ace since he came to Boston.

However, the past two starts have been huge for him, including taking a no-hitter into the eighth inning against Seattle.

The team expected bigger things from him this year, but consistency will be even more important for the right-hander. Over his past two outings he has yielded only two earned runs over 15 innings, including nine strikeouts against just three walks. Equally as important, the team has won three of his past five starts and Lackey has lasted at least six innings in nine of his past 10 outings.

Slumping

Gio Gonzalez (9-6, 3.75 ERA), Oakland Athletics

The right-hander has a respectable ERA and a nice win-loss record, but has struggled in his past three outings.

"You have to get ahead of the hitters. If I fall behind on them they're going to do the job," Gonzalez told the Associated Press. "When you fall behind it just spirals out of control. I should have taken a moment to step back, take a deep breath and attack the zone."

The 24-year-old has lasted just 17 innings in his past three starts, yielding 10 earned runs and 22 hits while walking eight against just 11 strikeouts over that span. Surprisingly enough, however, the under has hit in three of his past five starts.

Ryan Rowland-Smith (1-9, 6.27 ERA), Seattle Mariners

The Mariners might simply be better trotting out a pitching machine than using Rowland-Smith.

The left-hander has been especially abysmal in his past three starts, giving up 17 runs on 22 hits over just 13.1 innings. Even worse, he has given up two home runs and handed out three walks over that span.

Through 18 starts this year, he has lasted a meager 93.1 innings and has a horrific 38-38 strikeout to walk ratio. In his past 10 outings overall, the Mariners are an absurd 1-9.

This Day in Baseball
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On July 27 in Baseball History...

1890 - Brooklyn's American Association club holds a 13-8 lead over Columbus in the eighth inning at Long Island Grounds on a Sunday game when they run out of baseballs and are forced to forfeit. Brooklyn will win only 26 of 100 games and will disband on August 25.

1927 - Mel Ott, 18 years old, hits his first Major League home run, an inside-the-park round-tripper. It is the only inside-the-park job of his 511 career homers.

1945 - The Cubs purchase pitcher Hank Borowy from the New York Yankees in an unexpected waiver deal. Borowy, 10-5 with the Yankees, was put on waivers, apparently to solve a roster problem. The Cubs snatch him for $97,500, and he will help the Cubs win the pennant with an 11-2 record.

1953 - Dizzy Dean and Al Simmons are inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame at Cooperstown. Along with them, the veterans committee enshrines Chief Bender, Bobby Wallace, 19th-century manager Harry Wright, executive Ed Barrow, and umpires Bill Klem and Tom Connolly.

1970 - The Expos beat the White Sox 10-6 in the annual Hall of Fame game, following the induction ceremonies for Lou Boudreau, Earle Combs, Ford Frick, and Jesse Haines.

1978 - The Yankees win the first game of a doubleheader 11-0, but the Indians rebound to win the second game 17-5. Duane Kuiper ties the Major League record with two bases-loaded triples in the nightcap, only the third player (after Bill Bruton and Elmer Valo) to do so in the twentieth century.

1982 - Oakland's Rickey Henderson gets caught stealing three times by the Angels. Not since 1916 has an American Leaguer been thrown out three times in a game.

1983 - While picking up his first win as a member of the Royals, Gaylord Perry joins Nolan Ryan and Steve Carlton as the third pitcher this season to reach 3,500 career strikeouts, fanning four Indians in a 5-4 victory to raise his total to 3,501.

1984 - Pete Rose collects his 3,053rd career single off Steve Carlton in the seventh inning of Montreal's 6-1 win over Philadelphia, passing Ty Cobb as baseball's all-time singles king.

1988 - Tommy John makes three errors on one play in the Yankees' 16-3 rout of the Brewers.

1992 - Houston starts its club-record 26-game road trip with a grand slam by Eric Anthony. The Astros are sent away so the Republican National Convention can take over the Astrodome.

Daily Sports Roundup: July 27

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Rangers look for a home win over the rival Athletics, while the Giants play host to the Marlins, and the Mystics try to dazzle the Sun.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League schedule for Tuesday offers up the Yankees at Cleveland, Baltimore at Toronto, Detroit at Tampa Bay, Minnesota at Kansas City, Seattle at the White Sox, Boston at the Angels, and Oakland at Texas. Gio Gonzalez (9-6, 3.75 ERA) is slated to go up against Cliff Lee (9-4, 2.56 ERA) in that Athletics/Rangers matchup. Lefthander Gonzalez picked up a win against the Red Sox in his most recent trip to the mound despite surrendering four runs on seven hits over his six innings of work. Lefthander Lee beat the Angels in his last outing, allowing two runs on five hits over his 8 1-3 innings pitched. Lee has lasted at least eight innings in nine of his past 10 outings.

Over in the National League on Tuesday it'll be Arizona at Philadelphia, Atlanta at Washington, St. Louis at the Mets, the Cubs at Houston, Cincinnati at Milwaukee, Pittsburgh at Colorado, the Dodgers at San Diego, and Florida at San Francisco. The Marlins will go with Josh Johnson (10-3, 1.61 ERA) on Tuesday, while the Giants counter with Matt Cain (8-8, 3.10 ERA). Righthander Johnson had to settle for a no-decision against the Rockies last time out, giving up just one run on five hits over 6 1-3 innings of work while fanning 11 batters. Righthander Cain beat the D-Backs in his last outing while tossing eight scoreless innings and allowing just thee hits and fanning nine.

Rounding out the Roundup . . .

As well, there are six games on the WNBA's schedule for Tuesday, with Atlanta at Tulsa, Chicago at Indiana, San Antonio at New York, Los Angeles at Minnesota, Phoenix at Seattle, and Washington at Connecticut. The Mystics (13-8 SU, 13-7-1 ATS) fell 78-73 to Indiana last time out, but they beat the Sun 69-65 when the teams last met on May 30. The Sun (12-10 SU, 12-9-1 ATS) lost their second straight game last time out, falling 89-80 to Los Angeles. Renee Montgomery had 14 points for the Sun that day.

Bettors' best friend: Tuesday's wagering tips

Lines to keep an eye on

Orioles at Blue Jays– The hosts opened as a sizeable favorite at -215, but within a few hours the line quickly dropped as low as -230 with some books.

Oakland at Texas– The Rangers came out of the gate as a -230 favorite, but with Cliff Lee toeing the rubber, that line has swung to -240 in many markets.

Pittsburgh at Colorado – The home team opened as -185 chalk but that moneyline has moved to as low as -200 with some books.

Los Angeles at San Diego – The Padres started pretty high at -110, but that mark moved quickly to -120 with many services.

Weather report
(Forecasts are extracted from Weather.com the night before the game.)

Athletics at Rangers – There is a 30 percent chance of precipitation, but just a 6 mph wind expected to blow.

Pirates at Rockies – A 13 mph wind is expected to blow across the diamond from first toward third with a 30 percent chance of precipitation.

Mariners at White Sox – A 12 mph wind is expected to blow from left center toward home plate on a clear evening.

Who’s hot

The Giants are tied for an MLB-best 8-2 SU in their past 10 games, with the under going 5-4-1 during that stretch.

The WNBA’s Storm is 11-4-2 ATS in its past 17 games, including 3-0 ATS in all three games against the Mercury this season.

The Braves are doing a phenomenal job against the total in their past 10 games, beating the number eight times in that span.

Who’s not

The WNBA’s Tulsa has just 4 SU wins this season and is an equally bad 7-16 ATS this year, including failing to cover the spread in 13 of its past 17.

The Baltimore Orioles are tied for a Major League-worst 2-8 in their past 10 games and are just 7-14 this month overall.

The Mets haven’t just lost eight of 10, they are picking the wrong time to face the Cardinals. New York is a horrendous 7-9 against the NL Central this year, the worst of any team in the senior circuit.

Key stat

0 – Opposite-field home runs this season for MLB home run leader Jose Bautista. This season the right-handed hitting outfielder has stroked 27 gopher balls, but has failed to go the other way on any of them. Conversely, of the 12 other players in the Majors with at least 20 home runs, each of those players have gone the opposite way at least three times with a round tripper.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

The Mets put catcher Rod Barajas on the 15-day disabled list with a mild left oblique strain on Monday. Barajas had been an offensive catalyst early in the season for the Mets, hitting .228 with 12 home runs and 34 RBI. However, Barajas has been in a huge funk and hitting just .168 since the start of June. The result has been more and more playing time for rookie Josh Thole, and now the 23-year-old will take over full-time behind the plate in the midst of a pennant race. Thole is hitting .419 this year with a home run and six RBI, but he has only 31 at-bats and must play a more active role now in calling the games and planning how to attack lineups.

Game of the day

Oakland Athletics at Texas Rangers

Notable quotable

“There’s no such thing as a ‘Reliable source.’ Don’t believe it people. The truth these days is so far gone. No credibility.”
-- LeBron James' post on his Twitter account, judging journalists who said he talked to Hornets star Chris Paul about demanding a trade.

Tips and notes

- How safe should Jonathan Bronxton feel? The closer has 19 saves and 57 strikeouts on the season, but has battled illness recently and opened the door for 22-year-old Kenley Jansen. The young star made his MLB debut when he recorded a save against the Mets and pitched a pair of perfect innings two straight days against New York, striking out four on only 29 pitches. Jansen, who made the transition from catcher to power right-hander, adds another dimension to a light-hitting Los Angeles team who needs a deep bullpen to make a run at the NL West.

- It’s officially a new era for the WNBA in Tulsa. The Shock traded the last player off its roster who played for the franchise in Detroit, swapping forward Alexis Hornbuckle for Rashanda McCants. Hornbuckle started 10 of 14 games, averaging 5.8 and 3.5 rebounds per game, compared to 5.6 points and 2.4 rebounds per game for McCants. What really matters is that this deal went down at 4 p.m. on Monday and the Shock host the Dream tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. in an odd afternoon game on NBA TV. McCants is a long-shot to play, putting a horrendous Shock team at an even bigger disadvantage against an Atlanta team in the midst of a playoff race.

- The Indians bullpen situation could get very murky. Manager Manny Acta said Kerry Wood could return as soon as Tuesday depending on the results of how he throws during a side session. Acta also added that the 33-year-old will resume closing duties once he returns. Wood is 8-for-11 in save situations this year and has been rumored to be moved at the trade deadline. Meantime, 25-year-old Chris Perez has collected a pair of saves in Wood’s place and is 9-for-12 in save chances, giving Acta a younger and more dynamic option. If your money is on the Indians, beware of late-game situations.

Tuesday's six-pack

-- Matt Garza threw the first no-hitter in Rays' history Monday.

-- Padres/Mets are now only teams without a no-hitter.

-- Joe Mauer/Danny Valencia combined to go 9-9 in Minnesota's 19-1 win at Kansas City. Not the best night in Royal history.

-- Milwaukee beat the Reds on an Edmonds HR, their seventh win in a row at Miller Park.

-- Dan Haren made his first start for Angels, but left down 2-1 in fifth inning after getting hit on arm by a line drive. Uh oh.

-- Tennessee Titans are suing Lane Kiffin/USC over the hiring of the RB coach to become Trojans' offensive coordinator. Somehow I'm thinking this could/should have been avoided.

Tuesday's List of 13 (-1) Our summertime look at the Big 12

This is the last year of the Big 12 Conference. Here's a look.....

Baylor-- Get Griffin (knee) back at QB but lost seven starters on defense; Bears are 7-3 vs spread as road dog under Briles, 4-0 as road favorite over last decade. Last bowl was '92; they are 3-21 in Big 12 last three years.

Colorado-- 10 starters back on offense, seven on defense in make or break year for Coach Hawkins (10-22 in Big 12 play). Lost last 12 away games. Top 10 on OL return, have experienced QBs. -17 in TOs last 3 years.

Iowa State-- Lose 8 starters fron defense that allowed 14 less points per game in '09 than '08; was +8 in TOs in 9-7 win at Nebraska, its first win in Lincoln since '77. Last winning season in Big 12 play was back in '00.

Kansas-- Were 5-0, then lost 34-30 at Colorado (-9) and wheels come off so badly that Mangino got fired; new coach, new QB, but five OL starters are back. Allowed 123 points in last three games; defense needs fixing.

Kansas State-- Average total in K-State games in '08 was 70.7; LY, it was 46.3, with Snyder back at helm. QB Coffman started four games in '09. Wildcats are 1-9 as road fave since '04; Snyder 6-1 as home dog since '00.

Missouri-- 8 starters back on both sides of ball; Gabbert threw 24 TDs in '09, nine INTs. Tigers just 2-8 vs spread at home last two years; they are 8-1 as road fave last three years. OL has 80 returning starts; thats good.

Nebraska-- Won first bowl since '05 LY, are just 6-1 to win national title. 8 seniors, 3 juniors start on offense, with senior QB. Just 7-11 as a home fave last three years. September schedule is unusually easy for good team.

Oklahoma-- Soph QB Jones started 10 games LY; OU broke 3-game bowl skid. Lost six starters from defense that allowed 14.5 ppg LY. Sooners are 16-6-1 vs spread as home fave last four years. 3-8-1 vs spread on neutral fields the last four years (0-3-1 vs spread in Red River Rivalry).

Oklahoma State-- Lose seven starters on both sides of ball; no seniors on OL, new QB, could be rough year. 10-15-1 as dog under Gundy,12-7 as a fave last two years. Gundy 0-5 vs Sooners (outgained 367-109 last year).

Texas-- McCoy won 45 games as Texas QB; not easily replaced; Gilbert's dad was NFL backup. Four returning starters on OL helps. 70-13 in Big 12 last decade, scoring 35.3+ ppg last 7 years. 7 starters back on defense. Won four of last five bowl games, averaging 33 ppg.

Texas A&M-- Prolific senior QB Johnson (23 starts) should lift Aggies to first winning year under Sherman (10-15, 5-11 in Big 12). A&M is 9-22 as road dog since '00. Only two starters back on OL (one senior starter).

Texas Tech-- Leach is going to be tough act to follow; scored 36.2+ ppg in six of last seven years (32.9 in 7th year). Only one senior starter on OL, a new DC. Tech is 40-24 in Big 12 play since '02. Tuberville has solid track record, but Leach is unique character who built unique program at Tech.
