Wednesday Tips

The Wednesday baseball card involves another loaded schedule with July coming near a close. Four of the early night games inside the National League involve intriguing matchups, including a pair of pitchers that have thrown no-hitters this season hooking up in Philadelphia.

Diamondbacks at Phillies - 7:05 PM EST

Following Matt Garza's no-no against the Tigers on Monday, five no-hitters have been thrown this season. Two pitchers that have accomplished feat face off in Philadelphia, as Edwin Jackson and Roy Halladay meet at Citizens Bank Park. Halladay tossed a perfect game at Florida on May 29, while Jackson no-hit the Rays nearly a month later.

The Phillies have picked things up following a 1-7 run to start the second half, winning five straight games. Halladay (11-8, 2.28 ERA) rebounded from a poor start at Chicago to shut down Colorado, scattering five hits in eight scoreless innings as the Phillies cruised past the Rockies, 6-0. The Phillies' ace has allowed just one earned run in his last four starts at Citizens Bank Park, a span of 33 innings.

Jackson (6-9, 5.01 ERA) has put together a less-than-spectacular season in his first year in Arizona, giving up 13 runs in his last three starts (0-3). The lone shining moment for this struggling D-Backs squad was Jackson's no-hitter at Tropicana Field, as Arizona is languishing in last place of the competitive NL West. Arizona is 3-6 in Jackson's nine road starts, while the D-Backs are riding a 7-1 'over' run his last eight outings.

The D-Backs grabbed two of three meetings at Chase Field in April, but Arizona owns a 1-5 record the last two seasons in Philadelphia. Arizona owns a dreadful 10-22 mark in Game 2's of a series, while the Phillies have won eight straight games at home.

Marlins at Giants - 7:05 PM EST

The visiting team has dominated this series with the away club winning the first four meetings. Florida held off San Francisco, 4-3 in the opener on Monday to put a halt to the Giants' four-game winning streak. The Marlins are trying to make a push up the NL Wild Card race, sitting 5 ½ games behind the Giants to start Tuesday's action.

Rookie Alex Sanabia (1-1, 2.11 ERA) makes his fourth start of his career, coming off a no-decision against the Braves. Sanabia has struggled to go deep into his starts, not pitching past the sixth inning yet in three outings. The righty has pitched well, allowing his first run in three starts when he gave up a solo homer to Atlanta's Martin Prado in Friday's 7-6 extra-innings win.

Jonathan Sanchez (7-6, 3.35 ERA) is fresh off a 10-strikeout performance in his last outing against Arizona, despite going only five innings in a 7-4 road victory. The Giants have lost each of Sanchez's last two home starts to the Mets and Dodgers, while eight of the southpaw's last 10 starts have finished 'over' the total. Sanchez will be making his second career start against the Marlins, as the lefty gave up five earned runs in a 5-4 defeat last June.

The Giants are just 3-5 the last eight games as a home favorite, while scoring three runs or less in seven of the previous home games overall. The Marlins have played plenty of low-scoring contests on the highway recently, going 4-1-1 to the 'under' the last six games on the road.

Braves at Nationals - 7:05 PM EST

Atlanta is looking like the team to beat in the National League, despite owning the second-best record in the Senior Circuit behind San Diego. The Braves took two of three from the Padres at Turner Field last week, owning a 4-2 mark against the leaders of the NL West. Atlanta has split six games with Washington this season, as the Braves try to win behind veteran Tim Hudson.

It's been a nice bounce-back season for Hudson (10-5, 2.47 ERA), who made just seven starts last season. The Braves have alternated wins and losses in Hudson's previous seven outings, coming off a win over the Padres his last time out. Since going 4-0 from mid-May to the start of June, Atlanta has failed to win back-to-back starts made by Hudson, going 0-4 in his last four starts off a win in his previous outing. From 2007 to 2008, the Braves went 6-1 against the Nationals in Hudson's starts, but are just 1-2 since the start of last season. Hudson did beat Stephen Strasburg and the Nats on June 28 at Turner Field, 5-0.

Livan Hernandez (7-6, 3.10 ERA) has been the veteran presence needed on this Washington pitching staff, as the Nats cashed in his last start as a $1.60 road underdog at Cincinnati. Washington is 9-2 in Hernandez's 11 home outings, including a 6-1 mark as a home 'dog. The 'under' has been an extremely profitable play this season, cashing in 16 of Hernandez's 20 starts. The Nats managed a 6-3 win over the Braves on May 4, but Hernandez lasted just 5.1 innings, while walking five.

The Braves have hit the 'under' in eight of their last nine games, while going 4-2 the last six as a road favorite. Following a positive start, the Nats have reverted back to their losing ways by going 12-26 since sweeping the Pirates in early June.

Cardinals at Mets - 7:05 PM EST

St. Louis stumbled over the weekend at Chicago, dropping two of three to the Cubs. Despite that hiccup, the Cards maintain a one-game advantage inside the NL Central over the Reds. The Mets are slowly falling out of both the NL East and Wild Card race after losing nine of 11 games on the West Coast. The only two wins have come with New York's ace on the hill, who looks to keep his dominant ways.

Even though his record doesn't reflect it, Johan Santana (8-5, 2.79) has flat-out shut down the competition this month. The former Cy Young Award winner has given up only three earned runs in five July starts, while the Mets are 4-1 in that span. Parlaying the Mets and the 'under' in Santana's home outings may be the way to go, as New York is 7-3 at Citi Field, while the 'under' is 6-3-1. The last time Santana faced the Cardinals was the 20-inning marathon at Busch Stadium in mid-April, as the southpaw scattered four hits in seven innings as the Mets outlasted the Cards, 2-1.

The starting pitcher for the Cards in the never-ending game in April was rookie Jaime Garcia (9-4, 2.21 ERA), who made a name for himself by going toe-to-toe with Santana. Garcia is winless in his last two road starts, but his previous outing on the highway was a blown save by the St. Louis bullpen in an 8-7 setback at Colorado. The 'under' continues to cash with the young southpaw, hitting in 14 of Garcia's 19 starts.

The Mets beat the Cards four of six times at Citi Field last season, but New York looks to improve on a .196 average the last 10 games. St. Louis is 3-7 the last 10 road games, while losing three of the previous four road series.

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Florida Marlins at San Francisco Giants (-137, 8)

The Giants must get a big smile whenever they see a team from the National League East on their schedule. San Francisco is a sparkling 15-8 against teams from the opposite coast this year, winning six of seven series against those teams.

And the team’s play against the Marlins has backed up those numbers. San Francisco is 3-1 against the Marlins this year and has gone 10-6 against the fish the past three seasons combined. Overall, the Giants have won seven of their past 10 games.

"We have a very talented club that, if we play up to what we're capable of doing, what our potential is, we're going to be fine," Giants manager Bruce Bochy told MLB.com. "This club has been playing like we think we're capable of playing."

Meantime the Marlins are just 13-16 against teams from the NL West.

Pick: Giants

Pittsburgh Pirates at Colorado Rockies (-215, 9.5)

Don’t expect to see many fireworks between these two sides.

Pittsburgh starter Ross Ohlender is a horrid 1-9 this year, but the over has hit in just three of 14 starts. For the Rockies, Aaron Cook also is an unspectacular 4-6, but the Rockies have topped the number in just eight of his 19 starts.

The Pirates also are the worst hitting road team in the Majors, have a league-low 11 away victories and have seen the under go 7-1-3 in their past 11 away games. Meantime, the Rockies haven’t been much better, floundering to a 2-8 mark in their past 10 because the team isn’t hitting. Colorado is averaging just 3.3 runs per game over that span.

"We're not playing worth a darn right now," Rockies manager Jim Tracy told the Associated Press, "but there's two months to go and we know how to fix it."

But it’ll take more than a series against the Pirates to fix the Rockies’ problems.

Pick: Under

Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

Fausto Carmona, Cleveland Indians (10-7, 3.51 ERA)

There haven’t been many bright spots for the Tribe in 2010. However, Carmona could have something going in Cleveland after winning three straight starts. The Indians right hander has been steady over his last eight outings, boasting a 6-2 record and 3.53 ERA. Carmona went five shutout innings in his last start, leading Cleveland to a 3-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays.

Slumping

Edwin Jackson, Arizona Diamondbacks (6-9, 5.01 ERA)

The D-backs’ hurler has dropped three starts in a row heading into Wednesday. Jackson has given up 13 runs on 23 hits in that span, including allowing four earned runs – six total – in a 7-4 loss to the San Francisco Giants Friday. He had two throwing errors leading to three runs in that defeat.

Debuting

Eddie Bonine, Detroit Tigers (4-0, 2.72 ERA)

A doubleheader over the weekend has the Tigers digging in their bullpen for Wednesday’s starter. Bonine gets the call for his first start since September 2009. He went 1-1 in three starts last year, giving up five total runs in just under 17 innings of work. He has made 31 appearances out of the Detroit bullpen this season, taking the bump for 1 1-3 innings in a 6-5 win over the Toronto Blue Jays Sunday.

This Day in Baseball
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On July 28 in Baseball History...

1875 - Philadelphia's Joe Borden, also known by the name Josephs, pitches the first no-hitter in Major League history, beating the Chicago White Stockings 4-0. The game takes one hour and 35 minutes to play.

1931 - Bob Fothergill of Chicago hit a home run and a triple in an 11-run eighth inning as the White Sox beat the New York Yankees 14-12.

1952 - Rogers Hornsby, after being fired by the St. Louis Browns, replaces another former Brownies manager, Luke Sewell, as manager of the Cincinnati Reds.

1971 - Sixteen-time Gold Glove winner Brooks Robinson committed three errors in the sixth inning against the Oakland A's. Frank Robinson's three-run homer in the ninth won the game for the Orioles.

1976 - Blue Moon Odom (five innings) and Francisco Barrios (four innings) combined on a no-hitter as the Chicago White Sox beat Oakland 2-1.

1979 - Dave Kingman of the Chicago Cubs hit three home runs in a game for the second time in the season and became the sixth player in Major League history to accomplish the feat. Kingman's homers weren't enough as the Cubs lost to the New York Mets 6-4.

1983 - American League president Lee McPhail ruled George Brett's "pine tar" home run against New York on July 24 should count. The umpires had disallowed the homer because the pine tar on Brett's bat exceeded the 18-inch limit. The remainder of the game was played on Aug. 18 with the Kansas City Royals beating the Yankees, 5-4.

1985 - Lou Brock, Enos Slaughter, Arky Vaughan, and Hoyt Wilhelm are inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in a ceremony in Cooperstown, New York.

1989 - Vince Coleman is caught stealing by Nelson Santovenia in the Cardinals' 2-0 win over Montreal, ending his Major League record streak of fifty consecutive stolen bases.

1990 - Shawon Dunston tied a Major League record with three triples and led the Chicago Cubs to a 10-7 win over the Montreal Expos.

1991 - Dennis Martinez pitched a perfect game as the Montreal Expos beat Los Angeles 2-0 at Dodger Stadium.

1993 - Ken Griffey, Jr. tied a Major League record by homering in his eighth consecutive game, but it wasn't enough for the Seattle Mariners in a 5-1 loss to Minnesota.

1993 - Anthony Young's Major League record 27-game losing streak finally ends. The Mets come from behind for a 4-3 win against the Marlins after Young's error allows Florida to take the lead.

1994 - On the night the baseball players set an Aug. 12 strike date, Kenny Rogers of the Texas Rangers pitched a perfect game for a 4-0 victory over California.

1997 - Milwaukee's Steve Woodard allows one hit and one walk with twelve strikeouts in eight innings in his Major League debut to blank the Toronto Blue Jays, 1-0, in the first game of a doubleheader. He sets down the final seventeen batters to defeat Roger Clemens, the leading winner in the Major Leagues. In the second game, the Brewers turn their first triple play in more than eighteen years in a 9-3 triumph.

1999 - For the first time in twelve years, the U.S. baseball team beat the world champion Cubans, scoring five runs in the ninth inning for a 10-5 victory at the Pan American Games. Marcus Jensen's three-run homer broke a 5-5 tie.

Oakland Athletics at Texas Rangers [8:05 PM ET]

Daily Sports Roundup: July 28

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Yankees play on the road against the Indians in Cleveland, and the Phillies send their ace to the mound at home against the D-Backs.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League schedule for Wednesday offers up Minnesota at Kansas City, Boston at the Angels, Baltimore at Toronto, Detroit at Tampa Bay, Oakland at Texas, Seattle at the White Sox, and the Yankees at Cleveland. New York will go with A.J. Burnett (8-8, 4.77 ERA) on Wednesday, while the Indians counter with Fausto Carmona (10-7, 3.51 ERA). Righthander Burnett blanked the Royals over five innings last time out, and he beat the Tribe back on May 30 (one earned run over eight innings). Righthander Carmona has won three straight starts, holding the Rays to one unearned run on one hit over five innings in his last trip to the mound. Carmona faced the Yankees back on May 28, losing after surrendering four runs in his six innings of work.

Over in the National League on Wednesday it'll be the Cubs at Houston, Cincinnati at Milwaukee, Florida at San Francisco, Atlanta at Washington, St. Louis at the Mets, Pittsburgh at Colorado, the Dodgers at San Diego, and Arizona at Philadelphia. Edwin Jackson (6-9, 5.01 ERA) gets the ball for the Diamondbacks in that last contest, while Roy Halladay (11-8, 2.28 ERA) takes the mound for the Phillies. Righthander Jackson has lost three straight starts, giving up six runs (four earned) on eight hits over six innings against the Giants last time out. Righthander Halladay dominated the Rockies in his most recent start, tossing eight scoreless innings while giving up just five hits. Halladay has fanned 140 batters while walking just 20 over 162 innings so far this year.

Wednesday's six-pack

-- Cliff Lee got 36 called strikes from hideous home plate ump Danley, who called Jack Cust out three times, then ejected him. Thats the most called strikes for any pitcher in any game this season.

-- 10 of the 14 American League teams are over .500.

-- Royals just lost pair of home games to Twins 19-1/11-2. Terrific.

-- Not too often a lineup has three OFs batting 7-8-9, but Red Sox had it last night. Its usually not a good sign.

-- Must have been lot of unhappy patrons in Washington last night as star rookie Strasburg was scratched just before gametime (arm). Not like 40,000 people came out to see Miguel Batista pitch.

-- So, of course, Batista and three relievers blanked first-place Atlanta on Tuesday night 3-0, sending 40,003 fans home a little less annoyed.

Wednesday's List of 13 (+1): Our weekly look at American League

This week, something a little different; I'm listing with each team the one player that most comes to my mind when I think of that team. It won't be the best player necessarily, just my subjective opinion.......

14) Orioles-- Met Brooks Robinson once at a function; really nice man, but he denied wearing a shorter brim on his batting helmet than the other players did. Look at pictures; he definitely wore a shorter brim. When I was growing up, my friend's brother Bobby idolized Brooks, which why to me, he's the most memorable Oriole. .

13) Indians-- When Manny Ramirez came up with the Tribe, he hit two or three home runs in the Bronx, where he is from, and there were 100 or so people just going nuts down in the leftfield cormer.

12) Mariners-- For some reason, I remember Billy Swift getting drilled in the head by a line drive, and the ball going all the way down the leftfield line at the Kingdome. Thats my most memorable Mariner moment, other than the Mariner Moose falling off a skateboard and breaking his ankle.

11) Royals-- Kids now have no idea, but 30 years ago, the Royals were a really good team, and George Brett was by far their best player. For his career, Brett hit .305, twice hitting 45 doubles in a season-- those seasons were 12 years apart. He was an All-Star 13 straight seasons.

10) Blue Jays-- Dave Stieb pitched 265+ innings four years in a row, and had an excellent career, going 176-137 in 16 seasons. His book had one of the great titles, referring to a few close calls with no-hitters: "Tomorrow I'll Be Perfect". He really was a good pitcher.

9) Tigers-- I'm old enough that I remember the last of the guys who didn't wear batting helmets; Bob Montgomery, backup catcher for the Red Sox and Norm Cash, who hit .271 with 377 career HRs, winning the batting title for Detroit when he was only 26, in his second full season.

8) A's-- Jim (Catfish) Hunter became my favorite player when I was five years old; his name is misspelled on his rookie baseball card. Somehow I noticed that, and adopted him as my favorite, even though Kansas City A's were rarely if ever on TV then. Pretty good decision for 5-year old.

7) Angels-- They used to have hats with the halo on it, right where a halo would be; they also used to play some 5:00 local starts for national TV on ABC, and when Nolan Ryan pitched in one of those games, a no-hitter seemed almost inevitable. He is my most memorable Angel.

6) Twins-- Kirby Puckett looked like a ballplayer, but a beer league type, not a major leaguer. But boy could he play, helping the Twins to a couple world championships. I might be the only person who misses the dome.

5) White Sox-- Wilbur Wood was a lefty knuckleballer who once started in both ends of a doubleheader and went 24-17/24-20 in 1972-73; after that, he went 20-19/16-20 the next two years. He won 106 games over a five-year stretch for a team that wasn't that good. Can you remember any other lefty knuckleballers? I'm having trouble......

4) Red Sox-- All the games I've watched A's play Boston, the guy who put the most fear in my heart was Jim Rice. He hit 124 homers in 3-year stretch from 1977-79; seemed like half of them were against my A's, who were in serious decline after a great run earlier in the decade.

3) Rangers-- Pudge Rodriguez caught for 12.5 years in Texas heat; he is a .298 career hitter with 306 homers. He is 39 and still playing. Could be he is the most underrated player of the last 20 years, winning two titles.

2) Rays-- Carl Crawford is the best player in Tampa history, but when he walks as a free agent this winter, Rays will fall into a small market abyss that has engulfed lot of other teams. New York fans say there's nothing wrong with the sport. Shows how much they know.

1) Bronx-- Tim Leary and I share a birthday; he was 9-19 for Bombers in 1990, when Bronx went 0-12 against the A's, when Mr Walter Haas was alive-- Oakland's owner had significant resources. That was fun, having a level playing field to compete on.

Bettors' best friend: Wednesday's wagering tips

Lines to keep an eye on

Red Sox at Angels – This game opened with a total of 9 runs, but it has since dropped to 8.5 with many books.

Cubs at Astros – The total for this game opened at either 7.5 or 8 with many books, but has since jumped up to 8.5 in many markets.

Pittsburgh at Colorado – The home team opened as -205 chalk but that moneyline has moved to as low as -215 with some books.

Weather report
(Forecasts are extracted from Weather.com the night before the game.)

Athletics at Rangers – There is a 40 percent chance of precipitation, but just a 9 mph wind expected to blow across the diamond from third to first.

Pirates at Rockies – An 8 mph wind is expected to blow across the diamond from first toward third with a 30 percent chance of precipitation.

Marlins at Giants– A 12 mph wind is expected to blow from behind home plate toward the outfield.

Diamondbacks at Philles– A 13 mph wind is expected to blow from behind home plate toward right center field.

Dodgers at Padres – A 12 mph wind is expected to blow in from left center field toward home plate with a 20 percent chance of precipitation.

Yankees at Indians – A 13 mph wind is expected to blow in from right center field toward home plate with a 30 percent chance of precipitation.

Mariners at White Sox – A 13 mph wind is expected to blow from home plate toward left center field with a 60 percent chance of precipitation.

Cardinals at Mets – A 16 mph wind is expected to blow from behind home plate toward center field.

Who’s hot

The Marlins have won eight of their past 10 games, but wager on them for all nine innings – four of those wins have come in their final at-bat.

The Phillies are finally playing up to their potential – the team has won five straight and 12 of 14 home games, including going 7-1 in the team’s past eight as a favorite.

It’s going to take a special pitcher to slow down a white-hot Yankees lineup. The Bronx Bombers have topped the total regularly and are 8-2-1 against the number in their past 11.

Who’s not

The Mariners couldn’t hit their way out of a paper bag: the team has fallen short of the total in seven of the team’s past 10 games and is averaging a measly 3.3 runs per game this year.

The Tigers need a miracle to pull out of their tailspin. Detroit is 3-10 in its past 13 games and has scored three or fewer runs nine times over that span.

The Astros have crash landed hard the past two weeks. Houston is a pitiful 3-7 over its past 10, with bad pitching leading to the over cashing in for six of those games.

Key stat

15 – Home runs allowed this year by Yankees pitcher Phil Hughes. This number seems a little high but nothing crazy until you think about this – all of them have been hit at Yankee Stadium. He’s the first pitcher since Gaylord Perry in 1982 to give up his first 15 home runs of the year at his home ball park. Sounds like someone has become a road-only play.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Everyone thought that Jason Bay would miss some time when he crashed into a wall in Los Angeles as he made a play on the ball in the outfield. But he seemed fine. He looked fine. He’s not. Bay, who is hitting .259 with six home runs and 47 RBI, missed Tuesday’s game against the Cardinals with concussion-like symptoms. He has 48 hours to be evaluated before the team could opt to put him on the disabled list. With Carlos Beltran just returning to the lineup and a slew of other players on the DL already, this could further shake-up a batting order that has been unable to develop any consistency this year. The Mets are going to have problems scoring runs if Bay misses a significant stretch of games. "I didn't really have a headache until we got on the flight on the way home," Bay told MLB.com. "Over the last couple days, it's just some dull headaches. Given everything that happened, we'll try to be cautious."

Notable quotable

“Whether he was mentally checked out or just wasn’t quite into it down the stretch, he wasn’t the same guy. I think everybody saw that, but no one wanted to acknowledge it.”
--Toronto Raptors President and General Manager Jerry Colangelo to the Toronto Sun on Chris Bosh’s last season north of the border.

Tips and notes

- A few days ago we said jump all over the MLS All-Stars because of their fantastic, 5-0-1 record against European powers in the current format. A win over Manchester United still is very likely. However, pay close attention to who coach Bruce Arena puts into his starting XI. Not only is he the coach of the All-Stars, but he also is coach of the L.A. Galaxy, who have Landon Donovan, Edson Buddle, Omar Gonzalez and Donovan Ricketts elected to the exhibition. To complicate things even further, the Galaxy play in the CONCACAF Champions League on Tuesday night, putting the fitness of those stars in doubt, along with Toronto standout Dwayne De Rosario. The MLS side, especially listed at +1 (-140) still is a solid value. Just watch the lineup.

- If the Rockies didn’t have enough problems, things just got much worse. Closer Huston Street, who missed a majority of the season with an inflamed right shoulder, is in bad shape after getting hit in the pelvis by a line drive during batting practice on Tuesday. Street reportedly lost consciousness several times and was taken by ambulance to an area hospital. The closer has converted six-of-seven save opportunities since coming off the disabled list late last month and is a huge part of a Colorado bullpen that has a 3.83 ERA and already has eaten up more than 296 innings.

- Keep a very close eye on the Red Sox and their outfield. Jacoby Ellsbury, a fantastic defensive player who is a base-stealing demon, has played just nine games this year for Boston because of fractured ribs. However, Ellsbury looked really strong in a minor league rehab assignment last night, running down a fly ball and going 2-for-3 with a stolen base and run scored. The Red Sox are second in the league with 521 runs scored, but the team has swiped a Major League-low 33 bases and is far too reliant on extra-base hits to start rallies. With Jeremy Hermida batting a terrible .215 in left field, Ellsbury can’t get to Boston soon enough.
