Shadow, drop the idea of these DVDs. Get your ass off the couch and to the gym. Proper diet is the key to this challenge.

How heavy are you and how old are you? Are you in decent shape?

The reason I ask is because for several years, I kinda let myself go as well. I drank/ate too much, sat my ass on the couch and eventually, got to the point where I'd nearly lose my breath walking up the stairs. I wasn't even obese or anything, just lazy. At my heaviest, I was 6'2", 236lbs. But I wrestled in college at my leanest and meanest 65 lbs lighter. Well, I tried the gym, but unless you're a gym rat, this is basically useless. I mean, it's good to be active no matter what you're doing, but the gym isn't the thing that will get the results most are looking for. If you lose 500 calories in the gym, which is a hard frickin' workout, you usually just add that food to your diet and maintain your weight. 3500 calories = rougly one lb, which means you need weeks of crazy hard work and discipline to lose what amount to 5-10 lbs. You will tighten up very, very gradually, but without the right diet, this isn't even a given. Your metabolism plays tricks, you skip some workouts every now and then to watch a Thursday night MAC CFB game, you let your diet go or have a few extra beers here and there, and you never get to where you want.

Now the guys in the gym that look like we want to actually enjoy the gym. They go there because it's their hobby. Like hunting, coaching little league, playing the guitar, or riding a motorcycle, these guys just like going to the gym. If this is you, you know it and you're not fat because this is what charges your engine. Most men, and especially guys like us who gamble, are extremely competitive. We want to win, above all else. It's subliminal to want to have a better car than your neighbor, a hotter wife, and more money. You can deny this, but it's true for 99% of us. Unless you're a wierdo, you're not going to call the neighbors over to show off your pecs or lift your shirt up at work to show off your abs.

So...where am I going with this? You need to find a way to compete at this. If you do this P90x or Insanity thing, you need to pool together 4-5 other guys, throw a unit or two in a hat, and play for most bodyfat percentage lost or lbs as a percent of total weight. If you want to take up riding a bike, you need to find a local race 3-6 months out that you can train for. You need to set a goal for yourself for that race and find people in your area who also ride that can push you and vice versa.

Since I wrestled, I just took up jiu jitsu about two years ago. It was a smooth transition. Every class, I want nothing else but to dominate my training partners. And because of this, I watch what I eat, I drink more water, I run outside of class, etc. Now, I compete 4-5 times a year in local competitions and have my first MMA fight hopefully in December. I weigh between 190-195 and without bragging, my before and after could be on one of those infomercials. But I definitely couldn't wake up an hour early every day to get yelled at by my TV screen and take it as seriously as I do my training.

Anyway, I'll step off the soapbox. Hope that helps.

Look into P90x. It's exactly what your looking for. Shed a few pounds and get into shape.

@Killa ....i was actually going to look at P90x but wanted to get the cardio down first.....I actually heard the p90x/insanity(cardio) combo workout is pretty good

@HiLife....hook it up

@CowboyT....30 years old....definitely in horrible shape...not quite 5'11" and last time I checked I was at about 175lbs (could be slightly more now).....i run up and down the basketball court a few times I feel like I wanna vomit. good idea on the betting challenge...but i'm seriously in the stage i'm not sure I can commit....which is why I'm looking for a burned copy (instead of buying it myself)....if history proves anything, it tells me I won't stick to this for long.

@SS.....that is a last resort....lol

I don't know much about the Insanity work out. But I have a feeling that you wouldn't need to do both. P90x will whoop the shit out of you if you put forth the effort. The main thing is eating right. If your not willing to eat right, there is no point in working out. I would never follow the diet plans that they suggest, it's like starvation. Just try to eat as healthy as possible. No more junk food!

if you're not already in good shape then don't even give a thought to trying insanity. Insanity is way, way harder than p90x. If you're an average guy in average shape do the p90x. Insanity is just what the name says, insane.

well insanity is harder the second month than it is in the first, but the first month is completly nuts. Put it this way. I'm in fairly decent shape, I put in the first cd and i couldn't even do what they call the warmup without stopping a couple times. The people in the video stop during the workout. Don't get me wrong it is an incredible workout, and it will get you in the best shape of your life. just don't expect to be able to do the workouts without stopping several times. Also if you want cardio insanity is more cardio than p90x. If you eat right and do either of these programs you won't believe how quickly you will get into shape. But like others have said eating right is most of the battle. I lost about 25 lbs. in a little over a month with insanity and a good diet.

Have lost 15 lbs last 2 months by strictly counting my calories (no more then 1,600 a day). Have done it many time before. If I exercised I am sure it would be more. Not that hard just watch your portions and never have a cheat day, NEVER. Lots of stuff at the stroe these days packaged to make this easy.

So...where am I going with this? You need to find a way to compete at this.

This is always a good way to go. So easy and so effective, no wonder everyone ignores it. MMA fighting would be just behind a decathlon in terms of the ultimate in physical demands, but anything you like would work well. Mail in entry fees for a lifting competition or road race and see how much better your lifting or running goes every single day

Shdw, you mentioned basketball, why not focus on that? It would be extremely difficult to truly make yourself a better basketball player while not becoming less of a fatass

playing basketball with diminishing skills is very depressing.....i could never dunk the ball but at one point I could grab the rim.....

last time I went out to play I tried to grab the rim.....i could barely touch the f'n net.....it seriously felt like I got 3 inches off the ground...when did my verticle turn into a girl's verticle?
