SAN DIEGO -- Baltimore infielder Miguel Tejada, a six-time All-Star, has been traded to the Padres. The Padres will add Tejada to fill a need in the infield and add a bat to their lineup.
The Padres, who will get salary-relief help, have sent Minor League pitcher Wynn Pelzer to the Orioles.
Tejada, 36, is hitting .269 with seven home runs and 39 RBIs this season for the Orioles. Tejada, a career .288 hitter, is making $6 million this season.
Josh Bell was called up from Triple-A Norfolk to play third base for the Orioles on Thursday.
Pelzer is 6-9 with a 4.20 ERA in 22 games, including 18 starts, with Double-A San Antonio this season.
The Padres were able to add infield depth without surrendering their top two pitching prospects, right-hander Simon Castro and left-hander Cory Luebke.
Tejada has played 93 games at third base this season, though he's primarily been a shortstop throughout his career.
San Diego general manager Jed Hoyer has been seeking a middle infielder for weeks and has engaged the Orioles for at least the last 10 days.
Tejada will likely spell third baseman Chase Headley in San Diego and also play some shortstop.
