Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Philadelphia Phillies at Washington Nationals (150, 8)

The Phillies will start newly acquired righthander Roy Oswalt in this one, but that's not the pitching matchup that matters.

The have absolutely crushed Craig Stammen in their previous two meetings this season, cranking out a combined 16 hits and 11 earned runs in just 6 1/3 innings.

That's an ERA of 15.63 - a number that more closely resembles the Redskins' average points per game than a Nationals pitcher's earned-run average.

And it's not just Philly that's rocking his world. After being sent back to the minors to work on his mental game, Stammen is 0-2 in July, allowing 25 hits and 15 earned runs in 19 2/3 innings.

Not exactly big-league numbers, but with Stephen Strasburg becoming Washington's fifth starter on the DL this season, it's all hands on deck for the shorthanded Nats.

"It's not anything physical," Stammen said of his recent struggles on the mound. "It's how I'm thinking out there, a little bit, and sticking to the game plan little more - having conviction with my pitches."

The Phillies are not the team to face if you're short on confidence these days. They have won seven straight and outscored opponents by a combined score of 43-15 during that span. Look for their surging lineup to be slammin' Stammen.

Pick: Phillies

Chicago Cubs at Colorado Rockies (-125, 9)

The Rockies have been struggling to score runs lately, tallying a total of just 17 during their current eight-game losing streak.

They will need more offense than that against the Cubs, who have pounded lefthanded starter Jeff Francis like a drum to the tune of an 8.77 ERA in five meetings.

The Cubbies have been hitting southpaws at a .333 clip in their last 10 and look to do some more damage at hitter-friendly Coors Field.

They trot out righthander Ryan Dempster, who is 2-0 since the All-Star break, 2-0 against the NL West this year and 2-0 in his last two meetings with the Rockies.

Pick: Cubs

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

Ervin Santana (9-7, 3.55 ERA), Los Angeles Angels

The Angels can’t seem to make up any ground on the division-leading Rangers. Taking advantage of solid performances from their starting hurlers would certainly help out. Ervin Santana is enjoying a fantastic July with a 2.30 ERA, but the Halos are just 1-3 in his four starts this month.

Santana, who sometimes has a habit of getting taken out of the park, has surrendered just two big flies in the 31 1/3 innings this month. Not surprisingly, the under is 4-0 in his last four outings and 7-3 in his last 10 trips to the bump.

Wade Davis (8-9, 4.32 ERA), Tampa Bay Rays

Davis, sometimes forgotten in TB’s stacked five-man rotation, is 3-0 in his last three starts with a 2.11 ERA. The under is 7-1 in the 24-year-old righty’s last eight starts.

Johnny Cueto (10-2, 3.18 ERA), Cincinnati Reds

It seems like we’re praising Cueto every five days in this space. He pitched eight innings of shut-out ball in his last start improving to 4-0 in his last six appearances.

“I went out there today just concentrating on my location more,” Cueto told reporters through a translator. “I wanted to make sure I did not go out there and over throw. I just feel better and better every time I go out there.”

The Reds are 13-7 in games started by Cueto, but they’ve never been priced higher than -174 with him on the bump.

Slumping

Phil Hughes (12-3, 4.04 ERA), New York Yankees

You wouldn’t be able to tell Phil Hughes was slumping if you just looked at the win-loss column. The Georgia native is 2-2 in his last five starts despite owning a 6.52 ERA over the same period.

The over is also 10-2 in his last 12 appearances.

Daily Sports Roundup: July 30

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Yankees begin a series against the Rays in Tampa Bay, while the Reds meet the Braves, and the Lions go up against the Eskimos.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

On the American League schedule for Friday it'll be Cleveland at Toronto, Detroit at Boston, Seattle at Minnesota, Baltimore at Kansas City, Oakland at the White Sox, Texas at the Angels, and the Yankees at Tampa Bay. New York will give the ball to Phil Hughes (12-3, 4.04 ERA) on Friday, while the Rays turn to Wade Davis (8-9, 4.32 ERA). Righthander Hughes got back into the win column last time out, holding the Royals to three runs on six hits over his 5 1-3 innings of work. New York is 8-2 in Hughes' last 10 outings. Righthander Davis has won three straight starts, beating the Indians last time out (two runs in 6 1-3 innings). Tampa has won Davis' last four outings.

Over in the National League on Friday it's then Philadelphia at Washington, Arizona at the Mets, Milwaukee at Houston, Pittsburgh at St. Louis, the Cubs at Colorado, Florida at San Diego, the Dodgers at San Francisco, and Atlanta at Cincinnati. The Braves will go with Kris Medlen (6-2, 3.57 ERA) on Friday, while the Reds counter with Johnny Cueto (10-2, 3.18 ERA). Righthander Medlen took a no-decision against the Marlins in his last trip to the mound, allowing five runs on eight hits over six innings of work. Righthander Cueto blanked the Astros on four hits over eight innings in a win last time out, striking out six batters. Cueto is 4-0 with two no-decisions over his last six outings.

Rounding out the Roundup . . .

The lone Canadian Football League contest on the Friday schedule has British Columbia at Edmonton. The Lions (1-3 SU, 2-2 ATS) have lost three straight games, falling 24-20 on the road to Toronto in Week 4. The Eskimos (0-4 SU, 1-3 ATS) are still in search of their first win of the season; they were bounced 47-21 in Winnipeg last week. Oddsmakers have the winless Eskimos pegged as 1-point home favorites for Friday night's West matchup, while the total for the contest has been listed at 53 points.

Finally, there are five games on the WNBA's schedule for Friday, with Washington at Indiana, Los Angeles at New York, Atlanta at Connecticut, San Antonio at Tulsa, and Chicago at Seattle. The Sky (12-13 SU, 16-9 ATS) fell 78-74 on the road to Indiana last time out; Sylvia Fowles picked up 18 points for Chicago in that contest. The Storm (21-2 SU, 14-7-2 ATS) got past Phoenix 91-85 last time out for their 12th straight victory; Lauren Jackson poured in 33 points for Seattle that game, and Sue Bird had 16 points.

Friday's six-pack

-- Golfer Erik Compton is tied for lead at the PGA Tour event; the guy has had two heart transplants. Not bypass surgeries, transplants.

-- Roy Oswalt goes to the Phillies for JA Happ and two prospects; he makes his Philly debut tonight in Washington.

-- Buck Showalter is new skipper in Baltimore, but he won't start until Orioles' game on Tuesday.

-- Anibel Sanchez threw a nifty 1-hitter, beating the Giants 5-0.

-- The Summer of RA Dickey continues; journeyman improved to 7-4, 2.32 this season, blanking St Louis for eight innings in a 4-0 win.

-- Cleveland pitchers threw 104 balls, 129 strikes Thursday, which is why they lost 11-4. No team walks 12 guys and wins at this level.

***************************************

Friday's List of 13 (+3) Our weekly look at National League......

16) Pirates-- Good news: Pittsburgh hasn't sold anyone off at the trading deadline this year. Bad news: No one wants any of their players, except for Andrew McCutchen.

15) Diamondbacks-- Edwin Jackson since his 149-pitch no-hitter against his old team, the Rays: 1-4, 7.90 in five starts. Now the question; did the 149 pitches cause the problems, or is it just a coincidence?

14) Astros-- Brett Wallace hasn't played in big leagues yet, but already has been part of organizations for St Louis-Oakland-Toronto-Philly and Houston. Acquiring Wallace signals that Lance Berkman is next guy out of Minute Maid; this is what Astros have to do to get younger and have a better outlook for the future.

13) Nationals-- Not sure if they did or didn't, but when Strasburg was late scratch this week (he went on DL Thursday) they should've given 40,003 fans in attendance a coupon for free food or some such thing. You have to think at least half the fans were there solely to see Strasburg.

12) Cubs-- If they were going to hire Ryne Sandberg as manager, shouldn't he be in Wrigley right now, managing the Cubs and getting experience for next season? Lou Piniella mailed this season in; he hardly ever argues, he laughs in the dugout-- if he wants to quit, then just go away.

11) Brewers-- Went to a minor league game in Pittsfield Wednesday, and got to hear the great Bob Uecker on Sirius radio on the way over, calling the Reds-Brewers tilt. Made the 45-minute drive seem a lot shorter.

10) Marlins-- Trading Cantu makes sense; they'll move Coghlan to 3B and Morrison will play LF. Florida got a pair of AA pitchers for Cantu. Got to see Anibal Sanchez toss a 1-hitter Thursday, in his second start after I traded him in my fantasy league (for the red-hot Uggla, though).

9) Rockies-- Sounds like Rockies have gone from buyer to seller after this losing streak that ended Thursday; Aaron Cook could be going to St Louis (Rockies would plug Chacin back into rotation) and Hawpe could also be on his way out of Denver.

8) Mets-- As I type this, Metropolitans are 5.5 games behind Giants in Wild Card race. Memo to GM Omar Minaya: DO SOMETHING!!!!!!

7) Dodgers-- My 84-year old dad goes to horse races at Saratoga wearing the UNLV t-shirt I got him last week. Guy comes up to him and asks him if Jerry Tarkanian is in jail yet. You wonder why I can't stand people?

6) Reds-- Twins had a catching prospect named Wilson Ramos, but since they also have Joe Mauer, Ramos just got dealt to Washington for closer Matt Capps, as Minnesota goes for the jugular this season.

5) Cardinals-- Bobby Valentine was busting LaRussa's chops on TV the other night, as far as the Redbirds' pitcher batting 8th. "He's never done it in playoffs or World Series, so he musn't really believe in it." One thing LaRussa has done is win two World Series, two more than Valentine.

4) Phillies-- Acquiring Roy Oswalt was unspoken admission that trading Cliff Lee last winter was goofy. Two-time defending NL champs are only two games out of the Wild Card slot. Oswalt makes Phils' debut Friday.

3) Braves-- Omar Infante was picked for the All-Star team; he's hitting a crisp .330 this year, but in 13 Atlanta games since the break, he's had 21 plate appearances, and he's healthy. If a guy doesn't start for his own club how in the name of Chico Ruiz was he on the freakin' All-Star team?

2) Giants-- Buster Posey is hitting .358 as a rookie; you wonder in a tight race like this one, if they'll be kicking themselves for waiting so long to get the kid up to the major leagues this season (debut was May 29).

1) Padres-- Superior move adding the great leader Tejada Thursday; now the question is, will he play SS or 3B? Drew 42,075 fans Thursday, so it looks like the natives are starting to believe in the Friars.

Sparks at Liberty (WNBA): Total opened at 151 but has dropped to 149.5.

Dream at Sun (WNBA): Total opened at 171.5 but has skyrocketed to as high as 175 at some books.

A's at White Sox: 30 percent chance of thunderstorms.

Orioles at Royals: 30 percent chance of thunderstorms.

Pirates at Cardinals: 30 percent chance of thunderstorms.

Who's hot

Twins have won seven of their last eight.

Phillies have won seven in a row.

Rays have won six in a row.

Giants have won six of their last seven.

Blue Jays have won five of their last six.

Who's not

Rockies have lost eight in a row.

Orioles have lost seven of their last eight.

Tigers have lost six of their last seven.

Diamondbacks have lost six in a row.

Royals have lost six of their last seven.

Angels have lost six of their last seven.

Key stat

7 - Number of Washington Nationals' starting pitchers currently on the disabled list. Rookie phenom Stephen Strasburg became the latest to hit the shelf on Thursday, joining Jason Marquis, J.D. Martin, Luis Atilano, Garrett Mock, Chein Ming Wang and Jordan Zimmerman on the DL.

Injury that shouldn't be overlooked

Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Ben Zobrist left Wednesday's game against the Detroit Tigers with back stiffness and his return is questionable. Zobrist was filling in for B.J. Upton, who missed his second straight game with a sprained left ankle. That could leave the Rays short on depth in the outfield in their weekend series with the Yankees. Zobrist is batting .272 for the year, with six home runs and 47 RBIs. Upton, who is batting .227 with eight home runs and 35 RBIs, will try to start Friday.

Game of the day

Yankees at Rays (-100, 9)

Notable quotable

"I'm a realist. I said, 'Hey, man, I'm not going to make no big spectacle about it. You've got a bigger legacy and a number than I do. I've been on several teams like you, but I've changed my number several times. You've had the same number. I don't need your money.' "

Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Antonio Bryant about giving new teammate Terrell Owens his No. 81 jersey number. Bryant did ask T.O. for a donation to his youth football program in Miami.

Tips and notes

The San Diego Padres have reportedly acquired veteran infielder Miguel Tejada from the Baltimore Orioles. This will be a big boost for the Padres, who have managed to hang on to the NL West lead despite offensive stats that ranks in the lower third of the majors. Tejada, who hit .269 with seven home runs and 39 RBIs with the Orioles, will replace Everth Cabrera, who is batting just .201 with one homer and 21 RBIs.

NASCAR star Jeff Gordon will have a new spotter on his team this weekend at Pocono Raceway. Hendrick Motorsports hired Jeff Dickerson, who left Kyle Busch's team last week, to communicate with Gordon on the radio during the race. Dickerson replaces Shannon McGlamery, Gordon's spotter since 2007. This subtle move could be key for Gordon, who hasn't won a race this season but is second in the points standings. A new set of eyes and ears on the other end of the radio could help him finally find his way to victory lane.

Ole Miss was expected to have a down year after junior quarterback Jevan Snead jumped to the NFL only to go undrafted. Rebel fans may forgive him now that former Oregon quarterback Jeremiah Masoli plans to enroll this fall and potentially play for the Rebels this season. Masoli was kicked off the Ducks in June for repeated run-ins with the law but has good marks academically and plans to enroll in a graduate program at Ole Miss. If he chooses a program that isn't offered at Oregon, he could be eligible to play for the Rebels immediately. Masoli had 3,891 yards and 28 touchdowns in two seasons for the Ducks.
