Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Yankees at Tampa Bay Rays (-113, 8.5)

Let's hope Matt Garza enjoyed his no-hitter in his last outing against the Tigers because he isn't going to throw one tonight against the Yankees.

At least not with Alex Rodriguez, who is batting .467 lifetime against Garza, in the lineup. A-Rod may be having a hard time hitting No. 600 but all his other stats are on the rise.

A-Rod has at 19 RBIs in his last 31 games, leading all of baseball with 38 since June 21. As goes A-Rod so goes the Yankees, who are 22-9 during that span.

"I'm focused on what we keep doing every night - playing good baseball and winning," said Rodriguez, who leads all of baseball with 38 RBIs in his last 31 games.

Starter Javier Vazquez also has heated up with the weather, going 3-0 in his last four outings and allowing only a total of eight earned runs during those 26 innings.

Vazquez hasn't faced the Rays since losing in opening week and Garza has managed to dodge the Yankees all season, but he is 1-3 lifetime against them.

Despite the Rays' recent hot streak, they have only been batting .227 against righties over their last 10. Look for Vazquez to steal Garza's thunder tonight.

Pick: Yankees

Atlanta Braves at Cincinnati Reds (-105, 8.5)

Atlanta starter Jair Jurrjens is 3-0 since returning from the DL, but he hasn't had to face the Reds, who have a track record of success against the righthander.

Jurrjens is 0-2 lifetime with a 6.75 ERA in three starts against the Reds, who are batting .303 against righties over their last 10, almost 50 points better than the Braves.

Cincinnati counters with righty Bronson Arroyo, who is 5-3 against the Braves and is coming off a heartbreaking loss to the Brewers in which he allowed only three hits over eight innings. He threw 66 of his 88 pitches for strikes and threw first-pitch strikes to 19 of the 27 batters he faced to lose despite a strong performance.

"The end of the game, I play a mental chess match," Arroyo said. "That's how I win ballgames."

This time expect him to check-mate the Braves.

Pick: Reds

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

Javier Vazquez (9-7, 4.54 ERA), New York Yankees

Vazquez is going head to head against a pitcher fresh off a no-hitter but you could still make an argument that the Yankee hurler is in a better pitching groove than the Rays Matt Garza.

The former Atlanta Brave is 3-0 with a 2.77 ERA in July. The Yanks are 7-3 in his last 10 starts and the under is also 7-3 over the same stretch.

Tom Gorzelanny (6-5, 3.22 ERA), Chicago Cubs

Not much is going right for the Cubs these days. Gorzelanny, who’s supposed to be a back-of-the-rotation guy, is arguably Chicago’s best starter right now while Carlos Zambrano, who’s supposed to be their ace, is figuring out things in anger management classes.

Gorzelanny owns a 2.82 ERA over his last five appearances and the Cubs are 4-0 in his last four starts.

Slumping

Jeff Suppan (0-6, 6.18 ERA), St. Louis Cardinals

The Cards didn’t land Roy Oswalt which means they’re still looking for somebody to mercifully take over Suppan’s spot in the rotation. St. Louis is 2-7 in Suppan’s seven starts since he was rejoined his former team.

Here’s the weird part: the under is 6-1 in those seven games despite Suppan’s 4.50 ERA. Might have something to do with higher totals. Oddsmakers put the total at 12 in Suppan’s last appearance.

Brad Bergesen (3-9, 6.95 ERA), Baltimore Orioles

It’s hard to remember all the promise Bergesen showed in 2009. That’s because there’s been little shine to his performance in 2010.

Newly appointed manager Buck Showalter is scratching his head now trying to figure out how to get Bergesen back on track.

All we can say is good luck, Buck.

The 24-year-old is 0-6 with an 8.92 ERA in his last eight starts.

This Day in Baseball
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On July 31 in Baseball History...

1897 - Brooklyn pitcher Brickyard Kennedy becomes so upset at umpire Hank O'Day that he throws the ball at him. The baseball misses O'Day, who has his back turned, allowing George Davis to score the winning run for the Giants.

1909 - For the second time in two years, Bill Burns has a no-hitter broken up with two outs in the ninth, when Washington's Otis Clymer singles. Burns and the White Sox win 1-0. Burns is the only pitcher to suffer this fate twice until Dave Stieb of Toronto does on September 24 and 30, 1988.

1930 - Lou Gehrig drove in eight runs with a grand slam and two doubles as the New York Yankees outlasted the Boston Red Sox 14-13.

1932 - Cleveland's Municipal Stadium opened and Lefty Grove and the Philadelphia A's beat the Indians 1-0 before 76,979 fans.

1935 - The Reds oversell their night game, and 30,000 jam in for the match against the Cards. Kitty Burke, a female fan, slips under the ropes around the infield and grabs a bat. Paul Dean lobs a pitch and she grounds out. St. Louis manager Frankie Frisch demands it count as an at bat.

1935 - Two American League pitchers, Wes Ferrell and Mel Harder, each hit two home runs in a game.

1954 - Joe Adcock hit four home runs and a double to lead the Milwaukee Braves to a 15-7 victory over the Brooklyn Dodgers. Adcock's eighteen total bases is a new Major League record.

1961 - The All-Star Game ended in a 1-1 tie at Fenway Park as heavy rain halted play. It is the only tie in All-Star history.

1962 - The National League rejects Commissioner Ford Frick's proposal for interleague play in 1963.

1972 - Dick Allen becomes the first player since 1950, and the seventh in history, to hit two inside-the-park homers in a game. Chicago beats the Twins 8-1.

1978 - Pete Rose singles off Phil Niekro to extend his streak to forty-four games, as the Reds edge the Braves 3-2. Rose ties Willie Keeler's 81-year-old National League record, achieved when foul balls didn't count as strikes.

1981 - The second baseball strike ended after forty-two days.

1983 - Brooks Robinson, Juan Marichal, George Kell, and Walter Alston are inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame at Cooperstown, New York, bringing the total number of inductees to 184.

1988 - Jose Canseco belts two home runs in the A's 6-2 win over Seattle to become the first player to hit thirty or more home runs in each of his first three Major League seasons.

1989 - The Twins trade American League Cy Young Award winner Frank Viola to the Mets for five players, including pitchers Rick Aguilera, David West and minor leaguer Kevin Tapani. Viola is the first Cy Young winner to be traded during the following season.

1997 - The trading deadline makes for a busy day. One big name goes (Mark McGwire to St. Louis); one stays put (Ivan Rodriguez signs a five-year, $42 million contract with Texas); the Mariners trade away two of their best prospects (Jose Cruz, Jr., Jason Varitek) for three mediocre relievers (Mike Timlin, Paul Spoljaric, Heathcliff Slocumb); and a couple of veteran pitchers find their way to Cleveland (John Smiley, Jeff Juden). But no trade is as shocking as the one pulled off by the Giants, who get Wilson Alvarez, Roberto Hernandez, and Danny Darwin for six minor leaguers.

1998 - The annual trading deadline results in several significant deals, but none is bigger than the last-second swap between Houston and Seattle. The Astros get Randy Johnson shortly before midnight in return for minor leaguers John Halama, Freddy Garcia and Carlos Guillen. Two days later, Johnson wins his Astros debut against Pittsburgh.

Daily Sports Roundup: July 31

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Tigers try to pick up a victory at Fenway Park, the Marlins battle the Padres, and the Canadian Football League wraps up its fifth week.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League schedule for Saturday has Cleveland at Toronto, Oakland at the White Sox, Seattle at Minnesota, Baltimore at Kansas City, the Yankees at Tampa Bay, Texas at the Angels, and Detroit at Boston. The Tigers will give the ball to Max Scherzer (7-8, 4.45 ERA) on Saturday, while the Red Sox counter with Daisuke Matsuzaka (7-3, 4.09 ERA). Righthander Scherzer was tagged with a loss by the Rays in his last start, surrendering four runs (three earned) on two hits over 5 2-3 innings of work. Righthander Matsuzaka had to settle for a no-decision in his most recent outing, holding the Mariners to one run on four hits in six innings. Boston is 6-4 in Dice-K's last 10 starts.

Over in the National League on Saturday it'll be the Dodgers at San Francisco, Atlanta at Cincinnati, Philadelphia at Washington, Milwaukee at Houston, Arizona at the Mets, Pittsburgh at St. Louis, the Cubs at Colorado, and Florida at San Diego. Ricky Nolasco (11-7, 4.35 ERA) is slated to take on Kevin Correia (7-6, 5.09 ERA) in that last matchup. Righthander Nolasco beat the Giants last time out (one run over 6 1-3 innings of work), and he's 6-1 in his last seven starts. Righthander Correia beat the Pirates in his last start, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits over six innings of work in that contest.

Rounding out the Roundup . . .

As well, there are two Canadian Football League games on the Saturday schedule, with Hamilton at Saskatchewan and Winnipeg at Calgary. The Tiger-Cats (1-3 SU, 1-3 ATS) fell 37-14 on the road to the Alouettes last week, while the Roughriders (3-1 SU, 2-2 ATS) are coming off a 40-20 road loss to the Stampeders. Saskatchewan is a 7.5-point home favorite for Saturday, with the total at 54.5 points. The Blue Bombers (2-2 SU, 2-2 ATS) beat the Eskimos 47-21 at home last week, while the Stampeders improved to 3-1 SU (3-1 ATS) with their win over Saskatchewan. Oddsmakers have Calgary listed as a 6-point favorite at home for Saturday's matchup, with the total for the game at 56 points.

Saturday's six-pack

-- Rockies beat Cubs 17-2 Friday night, scoring 12 runs in an 8th inning where they had 11 consecutive hits.

-- Aubrey Huff is hitting .383 in July, with 8 HRs, 23 RBI.

-- Division games mean more; Giants used starter Jonathan Sanchez as a situational lefty in ninth inning Friday night.

-- JA Happ won his first start for Astros, blanking Milwaukee for six innings, throwing 98 pitches. Roy Oswalt lost his Phillies' debut.

-- Red Sox local TV ratings are down around 35% this year; guess there were more than a few bandwagon types in Red Sox nation.

-- Jose Valverde needed 60 pitches to get last four outs in Detroit's 6-5 win at Fenway; he faced 11 hitters, allowed four runs, caused Leyland to smoke a few more cigarettes after the game.

*********************************************

Saturday's List of 13: Things I learned/re-learned this month.........

13) Media pushes for interesting stories; they weren't resting until some stupid team signed Terrell Owens. Now they're covered for August, as far as attention junkies like Owens, Chad85Johnson and Brett Favre taking up a lot of time and space that could be used on actual football stuff.

12) Baseball's All-Star Game is dying; it needs a jumpstart, say like next year having US All-Stars play a World team, then East vs West the year after that, then AL-NL in 2013. Would make it more interesting.

11) They should let non-All-Stars in Home Run Derby, and always one guy fron the home team. This could be the lineup next year in Arizona
AL-- Ichiro Suzuki-Carlos Pena-Vladimir Guerrero-David Ortiz
NL-- Mark Reynolds-Adam Dunn-Joey Votto-Adrian Gonzalez

10) I was pleasantly surprised to learn this month that sometimes even the blindest of squirrels finds an acorn now and then.

9) Saw 10 times more football jerseys than baseball jerseys in the casinos of Las Vegas; cocktail waitresses and cab drivers can't wait for football, so the people will come pouring back into the desert on the weekends.

8) Sitting in emergency exit row on long flights is good for your knees.

7) This is the third summer in row I didn't get to Florida for the summer hoop tourneys; I miss them. Nothing like 12-hour days watching lot of kids you've never heard of play ball. It doesn't sound like fun, but it is, in a degenerate kind of way. I do wonder if I could still do it now since I've given up drinking soda. Used to suck down a lot of Cherry Coke there.

6) Minor league baseball is still a fine way to spend a summer night.

5) We need to dig deeper into our stats; Michael Cuddyer (.278, with 10 HRs, 49 RBI) looks like he's having a solid year, but facts are, he's come to bat with 328 men on base, more than anyone in MLB, and knocked in only 39 of them, or 11.9%, which ranks 233rd out of 301 players who've had at least 150+ PAs. Thats really not such a great season.

4) Watching the British Open live from Scotland when its Thursday there and still 1am Wednesday night in Las Vegas, well that was both fun and a little disorienting. Mostly fun though.

3) Basketball legend Walt Frazier is a good guy, very soft spoken, a great ambassador for the NBA and the Knicks. If you like the NBA, I really do recommend NBA Summer League-- all the coaches are there, and you can talk to them. Plus, its another excuse to go to Las Vegas.

2) Nuggets' owner Stan Kroenke, who also owns 40% of the Rams and is trying to buy the other 60%, took the time to explain to me how it works for him to follow the NFL's rules so he can buy the Rams. Think he was a little surprised with my enthusiasm, but its good that he is going to be the new owner. Rams were stuck with a lousy front office for years.

At one point he's talking to me and it flashes in my head..... "this guy is worth freakin' $2.9B!!!!" Anyway, he was cool and I appreciate it.

1) You see in the paper all the time, people getting sick or dying way too young. There's nothing wrong with having fun. July was a fun month. Go out and make August a fun month, too..........

Key stat

34 - Number of homerless plate appearances for New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez entering Friday night's game since he hit career No. 599 more than one week ago. It took A-Rod 28 plate appearances to make the leap from 499 to 500.

Injury that shouldn't be overlooked

The Texas Rangers placed second baseman Ian Kinsler on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left groin, the second time that the All-Star has been sidelined. He missed the first 22 games of the season with a high ankle sprain and the Rangers started 10-12 in his absence, but they moved him to the leadoff position and they are 50-30 since. Kinsler is batting .298 with six home runs and 38 RBIs this season and could be a key loss for Texas at a critical time.

Game of the day

Yankees at Rays (-110, 8.5)

Notable quotable

"I just thought the guy’s got to come back in unbelievable shape, because if he comes back out of shape, looks bad, I mean, he’s just gonna get murdered. If he came back in shape, ready to play football, he’ll be there two days and everyone will forget what happened."

Washington Redskins tight end Chris Cooley said on July 22 of teammate Albert Haynesworth, who held out of voluntary offseason workouts. Haynesworth failed a conditioning test for the second straight day on Friday, preventing him from practicing with the team until he passes the drills.

Tips and notes

The Oakland Athletics placed closer Andrew Bailey on the 15-day disabled list Friday with a strained intercostal muscle. The right-hander has 20 saves and a 1.56 ERA for the Athletics so far this season. The team will likely split the save opportunities between Michael Wuertz (2-2, 5.01), Brad Ziegler (2-4, 3.50) and Craig Breslow (4-2, 2.81), who have combined for only four saves this season.

The San Diego Chargers have become a sexy pick to finally turn the playoff corner this season, but they opened training camp Friday without three Pro-Bowl players, including linebacker Shawne Merriman, who said he will not report until the Chargers can promise him job security. Merriman's name was floated in trade rumors and he has not yet accepted the team's $3.269 million for this season. He joins fellow holdouts Vincent Jackson and Marcus McNeill.

The Baltimore Ravens are known for their defense, but that well-earned reputation may be in jeopardy this season. The Ravens' already-thin secondary suffered another blow Friday as cornerback Dominique Foxworth tore his ACL and will miss the entire 2010 season. Baltimore is already short on cornerbacks, as Fabian Washington and Lardarius Webb are returning from ACL injuries of their own and All-Pro safety Ed Reed may miss the first six weeks of the season as he is on the Physically Unable to Perform list.
