Wednesday, August 4

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Milwaukee Brewers at Chicago Cubs (-142, Off)

After three consecutive subpar starts, Ryan Dempster welcomes the arrival of the Brewers, against whom he has enjoyed incredible success throughout his career.

Dempster owns a 13-3 record against the Brew Crew with a 2.69 ERA. He is 2-0 vs. Milwaukee this season and has held Corey Hart to 1-for-23 lifetime, but he settled for a no-decision in an error-plagued loss in their last meeting.

"We have to win no matter who we're playing against," Dempster said. "The more this season keeps getting later and later, the more losses pile up. We have to win more games, that's the bottom line."

The Brewers counter with lefty Manny Parra, who is 0-1 in four appearances against the Cubs with a 5.84 ERA. He has only one quality outing in his last six starts.

The Cubs are batting .302 against lefties in their last 10 games and should be plenty motivated after Monday's embarrassing 18-1 defeat.

Pick: Cubs

Cincinnati Reds at Pittsburgh Pirates (+137, 8)

Despite taking a no-decision in his last outing, Reds righty Johnny Cueto remains one of the hottest and most underrated pitchers in baseball with a 4-0 record and 1.55 ERA over his last seven starts.

Cueto is 2-0 against the Pirates this season and 8-2 for his career, carrying an even 3.00 ERA. He brings a 15-inning scoreless streak against the Bucs into this one, including a complete-game shutout on May 11.

"We appreciate what he's done and we appreciate the progress he's made," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "A lot of people are thinking he should be further ahead than he is now, but we don't. We think he's right on course to being an outstanding pitcher."

Pittsburgh answers with righthander Jeff Karstens, who is 0-3 lifetime against the Reds with a 6.45 ERA. He lasted just 2 1/3 innings in his last start vs. Cincy and the Bucs' bullpen is a question mark after trading away closer Octavio Dotel and another reliever.

The Reds are batting a solid .294 against righties in their last 10 games to the Pirates' .225. With Cincy seeking the NL Central crown and the Bucs battling for the basement, look for the Reds to batter the Bucs.

Pick: Reds

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

Chris Carpenter, St. Louis Cardinals (11-3, 2.93 ERA)

The Cardinals veteran righty has been stellar in his last four starts, going 2-0 with a 1.45 ERA. Carpenter’s most recent outing was an eight-inning shutout effort in which he allowed just five hits and struck out six batters in a 1-0 no-decision over the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Cy Young contender has also dominated his divisional foes this year, going 11-0 with a 1.58 ERA in 15 outings versus National League Central teams.

Anibal Sanchez, Florida Marlins (8-6, 3.33 ERA)

The Marlins righty has just one win in his last three outings, with two no-decisions, but he his carrying a slim 1.71 ERA and 17 strikeouts during that span. His last start was a complete-game shutout against the San Francisco Giants in which he allowed just one hit and walked only one batter.

Slumping

Edwin Jackson, Chicago White Sox (6-10, 5.16 ERA)

The former Arizona Diamondbacks hurler makes his debut with the Chicago White Sox Wednesday after being dealt during the trade deadline this past week. Jackson will to squaring off against another former team in the Tigers, hoping to snap a four-game losing skid in Comerica Park. The righty has a 7.25 ERA over those four outings. In 2009, while with Detroit, Jackson went 7-3 with a 4.27 ERA in 15 games inside Comerica Park.

Brian Matusz, Baltimore Orioles (3-11, 5.46 ERA)

The Orioles starter hasn’t won a game since the Fourth of July, going 0-2 with a 12.46 ERA in his four outings since. In his last trip to the bump, Matusz allowed five earned runs on two hits while walking four batters in only 3 1-3 innings pitched for a no-decision against the Kansas City Royals. The funny thing is the left hander had a no-hitter through four innings before the wheels fell off.

This Day in Baseball
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On August 4 in Baseball History...

1901 - Cincinnati and Pittsburgh players are clocked while running from home plate to first base. The fastest time for the 90-foot sprint is three seconds flat, by Pirates outfielder Ginger Beaumont.

1903 - Nap Lajoie is so furious that umpire Tommy Connolly has put an old black ball into play that he hurls the ball over the grandstand. His act results in Cleveland forfeiting the game to Detroit.

1909 - Umpire Tim Hurst instigates a riot by spitting at Athletics second baseman Eddie Collins, who had questioned a call. This incident eventually leads to Hurst's banishment from baseball two weeks later.

1910 - Jack Coombs of the Philadelphia A's and Ed Walsh of the Chicago White Sox hooked up in a 16-inning scoreless tie. Coombs struck out 18 and allowed three hits.

1929 - The Cleveland Indians, down to their last out, scored nine runs in the ninth inning for a 14-6 comeback victory over the New York Yankees.

1941 - In the third inning, catcher Mickey Owen catches three foul flies, the first time in the major leagues that feat has been recorded. His Dodgers whip the Giants 11-6.

1963 - New York's Mickey Mantle, batting for the first time in two months after breaking his left foot, hit a pinch home run in the ninth inning to beat the Baltimore Orioles 11-10 and give the Yankees a split of a doubleheader.

1980 - The Seattle Mariners fire manager Darrell Johnson and replace him with Maury Wills, who becomes the third black manager in Major League history. Seattle had lost nine games in a row and 20 of 24 since the All-Star break.

1982 - Joel Youngblood became the first in Major League history to get a base hit for two different teams in two different cities in the same day. In the afternoon, his hit drove in the winning run for the New York Mets in a 7-4 victory in Chicago. After the game, he was traded to the Montreal Expos and played that night in Philadelphia. He entered the game in right field in the fourth inning and later got a single.

1983 - While warming up before the fifth inning of the Yankees 3-1 win over the Blue Jays game at Toronto's Exhibition Stadium, New York outfielder Dave Winfield accidentally kills a seagull with a thrown ball. After the game, Winfield is brought to the Ontario Provincial Police station on charges of cruelty to animals and is forced to post a $500 bond before being released. The charges will be dropped the following day.

1985 - The 40-year-old Tom Seaver became the 17th 300-game winner in major league history with a six-hitter — all singles — as the Chicago White Sox defeated the New York Yankees 4-1 on Phil Rizzuto Day. Seaver walked one and struck out seven, giving him 3,499 in his 19-year career.

1989 - Dave Stieb of the Toronto Blue Jays, who lost consecutive no-hit bids with two outs in the ninth inning in September, came within one out of a perfect game before settling for a two-hit 2-1 victory over the New York Yankees.

1993 - Tony Gwynn has six hits against the Giants. It is the Padres outfielder's fourth game of 1993 with five or more hits. He becomes only the third person to get five hits or better that many times in a season.

1996 - Jim Bunning and Earl Weaver are inducted into the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.

1997 - Brad Radke of Minnesota got his 12th straight win, pitching seven strong innings in the Twins' 9-3 victory over Toronto. Radke became only the third pitcher since 1950 to win 12 consecutive starts.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tips and Trends
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago White Sox at Detroit Tigers [ESPN | 7:05 PM ET]

White Sox: Chicago is cruising along at 60-45 SU this season, the best mark in the American League Central. The White Sox are in a battle with the Twins and the rest of the Wild Card hopefuls in the American League for a postseason berth. Chicago has competed quite well on the road this season, going 27-25 SU. The White Sox are +12.38 and +7.13 units both SU and on the RL this year. P Edwin Jackson will make his first start for the White Sox since being traded from Arizona. Jackson will look to earn his teammates respect with a gutsy road performance against a good home team in the Tigers. Chicago is 26-8 in their last 34 games against a right-handed starter. The White Sox are 12-4 in their last 16 road games against a team with a losing record. The White Sox are 37-15 in their last 52 games on grass. Chicago is 16-40 in their last 56 road games against a team with a home winning percentage greater than .600%.

White Sox are 21-5 last 26 games against a team with a losing record.
Under is 8-1 last 9 road games against a team with a losing record.

Key Injuries - RF Carlos Quentin (rest) is probable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Tigers (-107, O/U 9): That noise you hear is the sound of the Tigers season coming to an abrupt halt. Detroit has been atrocious of late, so bad that they now have a losing record on the season at 52-53 SU. Detroit now trails the White Sox by 8 games in the American League Central division. Detroit is -1.04 and +4.11 units both SU and on the RL respectively this year. P Armando Galarraga will make the home start tonight, as he is 3-3 with an ERA of 4.28 and a WHIP of 1.29 this year. Of course nobody can forget the perfect game all for not earlier this season by Galarraga. The Tigers are 22-6 in their last 28 home games against a team with a winning road record. Detroit is 36-17 in their last 53 home games overall. The Tigers are 3-13 in their last 16 games against a right-handed starter. Detroit is 1-5 in their last 6 games during game 3 of a series. Detroit is 5-2 in Galarraga's last 7 home starts. The Tigers are 7-3 in Galarraga's last 10 starts.

Tigers are 1-6 last 7 games against a team with a winning record.
Under is 7-2 last 9 home games against a team with a winning road record.

Key Injuries - LF Johnny Damon (back) is questionable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 7 (OVER - Total of the Day)

San Diego Padres at Los Angeles Dodgers [10:10 PM ET]

Daily Sports Roundup: August 4

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Giants continue their set in Colorado against the Rockies, while the Blue Jays battle with the Yankees, and the Sky meet the Sparks.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League schedule for Wednesday has Kansas City at Oakland, the Angels at Baltimore, the White Sox at Detroit, Cleveland at Boston, Minnesota at Tampa Bay, Texas at Seattle, and Toronto at the Yankees. The Blue Jays are expected to send Shaun Marcum (10-4, 3.24 ERA) to the mound in that last contest, while the Yankees counter with Phil Hughes (12-4, 4.07 ERA). Righthander Marcum has won three straight starts, holding the Orioles, Tigers, and Indians to just four runs over his last 17 2-3 innings of work. Righthander Hughes took a no-decision against the Blue Jays back in his July 4 outing, surrendering five runs on six hits over six innings of work in that game.

Over in the National League on Wednesday it'll be Cincinnati at Pittsburgh, Milwaukee at the Cubs, the Mets at Atlanta, Philadelphia at Florida, Houston at St. Louis, Washington at Arizona, San Diego at the Dodgers, and San Francicso at Colorado. The Giants will go with Madison Bumgarner (4-3, 2.70 ERA) on Wednesday, while the Rockies hand the ball to Ubaldo Jimenez (16-2, 2.67 ERA). Lefthander Bumgarner faced the Rockies back on July 1, giving up four runs (three earned) on nine hits over seven innings of work in a loss. Righthander Jimenez got back into the win column last time out, holding the Pirates to just one run on four hits over his seven innings pitched.

Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, there's one game on the WNBA's schedule for Wednesday, with Chicago at Los Angeles. The Sky (12-15 SU, 17-10 ATS) lost their third straight game last time out, falling 97-96 on the road to Phoenix; Sylvia Fowles poured in 35 points in that loss for Chicago, while Jia Perkins was good for 23 points. The Sparks (8-17 SU, 7-18 ATS) were beaten 88-79 on the road by New York last time out. Tina Thompson led the way with 18 points for the Sparks in that loss, and Tina Penicheiro picked up seven assists.

Wednesday's six-pack

-- Astros are on fire, scoring 25 runs in last 11 innings; winning seven games in a row. Solid managing job by Brad Mills.

-- Ted Lilly pays immediate dividends for Dodgers beating Padres 2-1; off balance San Diego got two hits on 17 balls in play off Lilly.

-- Jonathan Sanchez blanked Rockies for six innings as Giants pounded on Colorado 10-0, pulling away from Rockies in Wild Card race.

-- Cubs rookie Diamond fanned 10 in six IP, but lost 4-3 to Milwaukee in his major league debut.

-- Buck Showalter won his debut as Orioles manager 6-3; his pitchers didn't walk anyone. They never did that for the other two managers.

-- 25 of the 30 starting pitchers got decisions Tuesday, even though 8 of the 15 games were decided by one or two runs.

Wednesday's List of 13: Random thoughts on a summer night.....

13) Greedy New Jersey Giants still have 1,250 unsold PSLs for this year; had to believe a team that had a huge waiting list for season tickets for as long as I can remember suddenly can't sell out their new $1.6B stadium. Greed isn't always good.

12) Here are some of the PSLs that remain unsold.........
-- Mezzanine B-- $7,500 just for the PSL, then $400 a game.
-- Club Level A-- $12,500 for the PSL, then $500 a ticket per game.
-- Coach's Club-- $20,000 for the PSL, then $700 a ticket per game.

11) By the way, this new $1.6B stadium replaced a stadium that was only 33 years old and was perfectly fine, except it didn't suck enough of the money out their loyal customer's pockets. Greedy bastards.

10) Juan Samuel won't stay on Buck Showalter's staff after going 17-34 as interim manager of the Orioles. He'll do some scouting in the Dominican for the O's, then hopefully hook on with some other major league club.

9) Would love to see how Nolan Ryan's Rangers would have handled the pitching phenom Stephen Strasburg. Nationals have to be worried about keeping the kid healthy- he's made them a lot of money this year. Texas has a more old school philosophy to developing pitchers.

8) Was wondering what all the fuss was about Jeremiah Masoli going to Ole Miss, after leaving Oregon, then I realized the kid is eligible to play this year, and the Rebels desperately need a QB. Masoli has been thru a decent amount of turmoil recently; not sure how much of it is his fault, and how much is just wrong place/wrong time, but lot of eyes are going to be on him this fall. QB in the SEC is a fishbowl position.

7) Was watching the original Rocky Monday night; when he was running thru streets of Philly during the training scenes, he's wearing an old school pair of Chuck Taylor Converse All-Stars. Nike didn't even exist in 1976.

6) Rumor that won't go away: Memphis winds up in the Big East.

5) Sacramento Kings' guard Tyreke Evans was caught going 130 mph out in California Memorial Day weekend, and was arrested at gunpoint when he was finally pulled over. Kid drives a purple Mercedes, so least his car is in team colors. Imagine owning a team and paying your best player the kind of money Evans makes, and he's out driving 130 mph? Yikes.

4) Blackhawks let their goialie go because they've decided that it is more important for them to have strong defense/centers than a marquee goalie, and with the salary cap, they had to cut costs somewhere.

3) They have instant replay at Little League World Series? Good God.

2) Watching A's-Royals game Tuesday night, and Hohn/Darling are in a few more disputes; night after night, you see the same umps involved in arguments. The umpires you never notice? They're the good ones.

1) Joe Webb might be the happiest man in Minnesota; he was #4 on the Vikings' QB depth chart, but if Favre retires, he moves up to #3 and will likely start the season in uniform.

Ugliest rumor I saw all day was Favre not coming back until after Week 4 bye, figuring he can't play all 16 games, but could play 13. Just great......

3 - Combined number of at-bats it took legendary sluggers Babe Ruth (1) and Hank Aaron (2) to go from home run Nos. 599 to 600. Yankees star Alex Rodriguez entered Tuesday night's game homerless in 48 at-bats since hitting No. 599 last month.

Injury that shouldn't be overlooked

The Philadelphia Phillies placed All-Star first baseman Ryan Howard on the disabled list with an ankle sprain. Howard left Sunday's game in the first inning after he suffered the injury while sliding back into second base. Howard is batting .282 with 23 home runs and 81 RBIs this season for the Phillies, who are three games back of the first-place Atlanta Braves in the NL East. John Mayberry (.211, four HRs, eight RBIs) has been recalled to take Howard's spot on the roster.

Game of the day

White Sox at Tigers (-107, 9)

Notable quotable

"I don't know how everyone feels or if they felt it. Maybe it was a little bit of a relief. Maybe it's a feeling of, 'I can do a little more without wondering what he thinks.' "

San Diego Chargers quarterback told the San Diego Union-Tribune about the departure of former teammate and All-Pro running back LaDainian Tomlinson to the New York Jets. Chargers tight end Antonio Gates also chimed in about LT's "sense of stardom status."

Tips and notes

Some may call it a 1-2 punch, but it's technically a 2-3 if you're scoring at home. Regardless of the numbers, it was a big blow for the Cleveland Indians, who placed catcher Carlos Santana and first baseman Travis Hafner on the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday. Santana was shelved with a knee injury, while Hafner has been plagued by lingering soreness in his right shoulder. Santana, a rookie, is batting .265 with six home runs and 22 RBIs in 45 games this season. Hafner is batting .267 with nine home runs and 33 RBIs.

Netherlands standout Arjen Robben will be sidelined for two months with a torn thigh muscle. The injury was revealed when Robben returned to his German club team Bayern Munich for a routine examination. Robben was outstanding in leading the Netherlands to the World Cup final against Spain. He will not be available for the Netherland's qualifying matches for the 2012 Euro Cup, where the Dutch are the second pick behind Spain to capture the championship.

Mark your calendar for Oct. 26 - the date the NBA season will open with a matchup of the Big Three present vs. The Big Three past. The Boston Celtics will kick off the 2010-11 season by hosting the revamped Miami Heat, considered the biggest threat to dethrone the Celtics as Eastern Conference champions after signing two-time MVP LeBron James and star forward Chris Bosh while re-signing standout guard Dwyane Wade in the offseason. The Celtics won the NBA title in 2008 after acquiring forward Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen to mesh with forward Paul Pierce. The Heat are 7/5 favorites to win it all next season while the Celtics are listed at 10/1.
