Los Angeles Dodgers -165 (Billingsley)

Tonight’s San Diego Padres at L.A. Dodgers game is one of many interesting and important match-ups. A sharp baseball bettor knows not to wonder to far from the -145 moneyline, however, the Dodgers merit such a venture at -165 (bookmaker.com).
Dodgers starting pitcher, Chad Billingsley, has been dominant in his most recent outings. His splits show the he prefers away/day games – however, his strongest outing of the season came 3 starts ago at night vs. the Giants. What really draws me to this play is not the pitching, but the intensity that the home team showed at the plate last night. It should carry over and San Diego rarely is able to keep pace in high offensive games.
One trend to look out for is that the Padres are 5-0 this season coming off of a shutout. I reviewed these five wins and tonight’s starting pitcher for San Diego’s, Kevin Correia was the pitcher of record in two of them. In both contests he gave up 3 runs in 6.0 innings of work against subpar teams (vs. Seattle & @ Pittsburgh). The Padres had the luxury putting out Clay Richard in two of those wins coming off of a shutout loss. It is reasonable to believe that San Diego is going to need to score some runs to keep this trend in tact … unlikely, as you already know.
Behind the plate tonight is umpire Brian Gorman. Back on May 21st, Chad Billingsley pitched at home with Gorman calling balls and strikes – Billingsley was terrific going 7.0 innings and allowing on 1 run on 4 hits.
Vicente Padilla gave the Dodgers’ bullpen a rest last night. I am looking for Billingsley, Dotel, and Kuo to build a bridge to their closer, Jonathan Broxton. Broxton has struggled a bit last month, but he is dominant so far this season against San Diego – throwing 6.0 innings of scoreless relief. The Padres have a great bullpen, and if Correia can improve upon his poor pitching against L.A., those of us who are on the home team tonight will certainly have to sweat it out and hope for the best.
The Dodgers showed last night that they could make one last push in winning the N.L. West. If they can win here and take the series they may gain some momentum, a loss tonight would be especially devastating to their playoff hopes.
Despite being a disappointment so far this season, L.A. is a stellar 28-14 versus their divisional opponents. They have had good success against the Padres, as well. I don’t like to put too much stock into the past, because today is today and yesterday is just history. The bottom line is that the Dodgers have been getting good pitching and the trades they have made has bolstered their ability to win games with more consistency. Tonight is a “playoff-like” game for the Dodgers.
