Smith felt the groin "grab," and was spotted limping afterwards, so it appears he's got a pretty good pull at the very least. Stay tuned for an update. Hakeem Nicks and Mario Manningham will work with the ones in the meantime.

Steve Smith - WR - Giants Mike Garofolo of the Newark Star-Ledger expects Steve Smith to miss "maybe a game or two" with the pectoral strain sustained in Thursday's practice.
After digging around, Garofolo said the damage to Smith's pectoral "isn't great but not terrible." Garofolo added that he's yet to hear anyone connected with the Giants predict that Smith would play Sunday against the Cowboys. We should have a firmer update on Smith's status Friday, but it sounds like Mario Manningham will move into the starting lineup this week. November 11 - 9:39 p.m. ET

Mario Manningham will get the nod as a top-20 fantasy option against a collapsing Cowboys pass defense. Smith has a "partial" tear of the pec, and is in danger of missing multiple weeks. Hakeem Nicks can expect to see more double teams going forward, although he's got enough talent to beat them. Fantasy owners should try to hang onto Smith through the injury. He still has a chance to be a late-season WR3 asset in all leagues.

Steve Smith - WR - Giants Updating a previous item, Giants WR Steve Smith (pectoral) admitted Monday that a Week 13 return is "far fetched."
Smith is aiming for Week 14, which continues to make Mario Manningham a more appealing fantasy starter. Smith is expected to beat Hakeem Nicks (leg) back into the lineup, but Eli Manning is likely to suffer with both of his top receivers out for at least the next three games. Manningham will make for a top-15 wideout play against Jacksonville's leaky pass defense in Week 12. November 22 - 4:42 p.m. ET

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>Smith confirmed that he won't play in Week 13 "unless a miracle happens" while admitting that he still has some weakness in his chest. At this point, it seems highly unlikely the stud possession receiver will be at full strength even if he does make it back for Week 14. Smith has already conceded that he may need to be on a snap count when he returns.

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>"I wouldn’t say a big chance, but there’s a chance," he said. Smith is expected to be on a snap count during his first one or two games back, so he won't be a fantasy option. The chances do appear to be growing that Eli Manning could have both of his top wide receivers at 100 percent by Week 15.

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>"It still hurts, but I’m going to have to deal with that for the rest of the year," Smith said. "Just try it out (this) week and see how it feels." Set to play with a harness, Smith conceded that he may struggle to use his hands to shed defensive backs: "I’m not going to be able to get rid of defenders this way. I’m just going to have to do something else."

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>Smith is on track to play at Minnesota, although his role in the offense remains to be seen. We'd consider it more to be good news for Eli Manning's chances of having a big game. Smith doesn't plan to play a full complement of snaps, and would also likely match up with Antoine Winfield for most of the day.

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>Smith has avoided setbacks, and coach Tom Coughlin believes he's "on track" to return at Minnesota this week. Smith doesn't expect to be an every-down player the next couple of weeks, so there are better WR3 options for the fantasy playoffs.

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>They were both limited participants in practice for a third straight day Friday. Smith is a near-lock to play at Minnesota, although he's a risky and low-end WR3 on a potential snap count in a matchup with Antoine Winfield. We'd prefer Nicks' big-play ability in the domed affair if you're deciding between the two receivers. Nicks does also look likely to suit up.

Steve Smith - WR - Giants Steve Smith underwent microfracture surgery Tuesday, though ESPN New York's Ohm Youngmisuk reports the procedure did not involve a mosaicplasty as initially expected.
Newsday's Tom Rock confirms the report of a less complex procedure. Smith now stands a better chance of regaining his pre-injury form. It was the mosaicplasty that involved taking "plugs" of cartilage and transporting it to the damaged area. The recovery is still expected to take "up to nine months," which puts his status for Week 1 of the 2011 season in question. Smith is expected to be on crutches for six weeks before the rehab process starts. December 21 - 8:51 p.m. ET
