Spiller is the 31st first-round pick to sign this year, but his outlook for the season is not affected. He'll have plenty of time to carve out a hybrid role as an outside runner, slot receiver and kick returner. Although the Bills' blocking and quarterback play figures to be brutal this season, Spiller's jaw-dropping open-field speed will lead to some big plays. It remains to be seen how much he'll eat into Fred Jackson's reps, but we're expecting about 12-15 touches per game.

Spiller will soon begin running with the Bills' first team, and is already the primary option on both kickoff and punt returns.
That was quick. Spiller has game-changing talent to run with the big boys, and news like this suggests he'll have a bigger impact than previously thought. The Bills will put him and Fred Jackson in a committee, but having Spiller in the starting role sets him up to lead the team in touches. If Spiller continues to separate himself in camp, he'll deserve to be a top-20 running back pick in PPR leagues.

Gailey indicated that the hand injury is serious, which makes us wonder if it's a fracture. Jackson was abruptly pulled Friday night after starting ahead of Marshawn Lynch and first-round pick C.J. Spiller. "We hope to be able to get him back for the first game," said Gailey. "We’re not sure." Jackson's injury is going to greatly decrease the chances of Buffalo trading Lynch. It should also give Spiller an extended chance to work with the first-team offense.

The official diagnosis is a broken bone in Jackson's left hand. Four weeks from the date comes out to Sept. 10th, two days before the Bills' season opener against the Dolphins. With Marshawn Lynch (sprained ankle) expected to miss 3-4 weeks, C.J. Spiller could be the team's starting running back when they open the season.

Lynch was playing well before he go hurt, and it remains to be seen how the injury will affect his explosiveness. If Lynch makes a quick recovery look for him to split carries with C.J. Spiller until Fred Jackson (hand) returns.

Fred Jackson - RB - Bills Fred Jackson confirmed Monday that his hand injury, which required surgery, involves a fracture.
Jackson broke the fourth metacarpal. "Yes. I broke a bone in my hand," he said. "Hopefully ... I can get back by the opener." Jackson should return as the favorite for early-down carries, but rookie C.J. Spiller will get every opportunity to win the starting job in the final three preseason games. August 16 - 5:15 p.m. ET

C.J. Spiller - RB - Bills Coach Chan Gailey said Monday that he's not yet ready to name C.J. Spiller the Bills' starting tailback.
"We've got the luxury of three pretty good backs," said Gailey. "We'll make that decision when we get closer there." Fred Jackson is the nominal starter, but he's not expected back for Week 1 due to a fractured hand. Marshawn Lynch (ankle) may play in the preseason finale. Starter or not, Spiller is a safe bet to lead Buffalo's backfield in touches during the opener and beyond. August 30 - 6:12 p.m. ET

"I think that's a wait and see," said Gailey. Jackson was able to catch passes on Tuesday, but he'll need to come up with a lighter wrap for his wrist by the opener. "I feel there’s a 100 percent chance I could play," said Jackson. "But it's going to come down to how much they want to get me out there and if they want to use me." F-Jax concedes that his status is up in the air until next week.

Rookie C.J. Spiller deserves a significant role and Marshawn Lynch is back from an ankle sprain, so there's no reason to rush back Jackson. Our concern, however, is with the rising ADP of Spiller and the swift fall of Jackson's. Spiller is now consistently being drafted in the early fifth round, while Jackson is falling to the eighth and ninth. Jackson is the better bet for TDs, and may not finish with many fewer rushing yards despite the injury.

Even if Fred Jackson (hand) is active, as expected, Spiller is going to be the focal point of this offense. Beat writer Allen Wilson expects the No. 9 overall pick to get "at least 20 touches" on offense, on top of his work on returns. Considering Spiller's game-breaking talent, he has the upside to put up monster numbers with this kind of workload. As Wilson says, Jackson and Lynch had "best prepare themselves for a lesser role on offense."

Spiller and Marshawn Lynch. Only Spiller is a viable fantasy play against Miami's stout run defense. The Bills will likely get Spiller involved heavily on perimeter plays so as to avoid Randy Starks and company.

"He ran the ball pretty good [last week]," said Gailey. "You could tell he was rusty from last year not having played a ton and getting back into it this year." Gailey conceded that he was "unfair" in putting so much on C.J. Spiller's plate so early, so Lynch's increased playing time appears to be more than just a showcase for a trade. This remains a timeshare effort, however, so Lynch is a poor fantasy play this week.

I picked up Fred Jackson off the waiver wire this week. I don't plan on starting him, but it's tempting considering how good he did against New England last year.
