Wednesday Tips

The Wednesday night baseball card showcases several key matchups in both leagues, including a pair of big showdowns inside the American League. The Yankees continue their series in the Lone Star State against the Rangers, while the Twins and White Sox battle for AL Central supremacy. We'll start in the Senior Circuit with a rematch of last season's NLCS in the City of Brotherly Love.

Dodgers at Phillies - 7:05 PM EST

Two teams on the outside looking in inside the NL Wild Card race meet for only the second time since Philadelphia eliminated Los Angeles last October to win the pennant. Both clubs have work to do if they want to make it back to the postseason, but the Phillies sit only one game out of the Wild Card spot, while the Dodgers are 5 ½ games behind.

Roy Oswalt (6-13, 3.50 ERA) still searches for his victory in a Phillies' uniform, as the righty received a no-decision in a 5-4 win at Florida last Thursday. Oswalt does make his first home start for the Phillies after allowing six earned runs in two outings against the Nationals and Marlins. The veteran had received horrible run support over the last month, but was bailed out against Florida thanks to a pair of late runs to force extra innings. Oswalt hasn't lost to the Dodgers since 2005, as he beat Los Angeles twice last season as a member of the Astros.

The Dodgers send out Chad Billingsley (9-6, 3.82 ERA), who looks to deliver his fifth straight quality start. Billingsley had his 25-inning scoreless streak snapped in L.A.'s 5-0 loss to San Diego last Thursday, but the Dodgers have cashed the 'under' in the righty's last four starts. The Dodgers have not provided Billingsley with good run support, scoring five runs his previous four outings, splitting with both the Giants and Padres. Billingsley has pitched much better on the road, owning an away ERA of 2.95, while the Dodgers are 7-4 in his 11 starts on the highway.

The Phillies have owned this series at Citizens Bank Park recently, going 9-2 since August 2008. The Dodgers have had plenty of struggles on the road, owning a 1-10 mark away from Chavez Ravine since the All-Star Break.

Yankees at Rangers - 8:05 PM EST

A potential playoff matchup takes place in Arlington as Cliff Lee looks to shut down the powerful Yankees' lineup. The Rangers are in cruise control atop the AL West, while the Yankees are still in a tight race inside the AL East with the Rays. Texas is creeping closer to its first postseason appearance since 1999, when the Rangers were eliminated coincidentally by the Bombers.

Despite a 3-3 team record since coming over from Seattle in early July, Lee (10-5, 2.44 ERA) has tossed at least eight innings in all six starts, including four complete games for the Rangers. The 'under' is a perfect 6-0 in this span, while the Rangers have won each of Lee's home starts against the A's and Angels. The former Cy Young Award winner has seen the Yankees in plenty of uniforms, as this will be his third straight start against New York with a different team since last October. Lee shut down the Bombers on June 29 as a $1.50 road underdog, compiling a complete-game, eight-hitter in a 7-4 victory. Lee's teams (Indians, Phillies, and Mariners) are 5-1 against New York since 2008, with four of those starts coming in the Bronx.

Javier Vazquez (9-8, 4.63 ERA) hasn't been very sharp lately, putting together just one quality start in his last four outings. Vazquez has allowed 14 earned runs in his previous four starts, with his lone win coming at Cleveland (he received no-decisions in victories over Rays and Angels). The Yankees are 4-1 in Vazquez's last five road starts, but only one of those outings came against a team in playoff contention at Tampa Bay. Vazquez hasn't faced the Rangers since 2008, while not taking the mound in Arlington since 2006, suffering an 8-0 loss.

Texas has performed its best in Game 2 of a series, compiling a 23-13 record, including a 12-4 mark the last 16 at home. The Yankees have cashed the 'under' in eight of their previous 11 games on the highway, while finishing 'over' the total in five of seven games this season as a road underdog.

Twins at White Sox - 8:10 PM EST

The top two clubs in the AL Central continue their pivotal series on the South Side of Chicago as the second-place team will likely miss the postseason. Minnesota grabbed three of four at Target Field right after the All-Star Break to sneak back into the race, while Chicago tries to rebound from a series loss at lowly Baltimore.

John Danks (11-8, 3.30 ERA) looks for a win for the first time in three starts after failing to pick up victories as heavy favorites against the Orioles and A's. Despite a solid ERA of 2.87 at U.S. Cellular Field, Danks has been nearly a 50/50 betting proposition at home this season, as the Sox are 6-6 in his 12 home starts. Laying a big number with Danks at home is a red flag, as Chicago is 1-5 as a favorite of least $1.35 this season. Making matters worse for the southpaw is Chicago's 1-6 mark against Minnesota in his seven starts in this series since last July.

The Twins send out left-hander Glen Perkins (6-7, 5.89 ERA in '09), who makes his first start this season, taking the place of Kevin Slowey, who had his start pushed back. After beginning the season with some struggles at Triple-A Rochester, Perkins has put together five quality starts in his last seven outings in the minors. Minnesota is 2-2 in Perkins' four career outings against Chicago, with only one start coming at U.S. Cellular Field, a 7-5 loss in 2008.

The season series has been controlled by the Twins, owning a 6-3 mark in 2010. Minnesota is 5-1 the last six meetings on the South Side, while winning 15 of the previous 19 matchups with Chicago.

Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

Bronson Arroyo, Cincinnati Reds (12-6, 3.83 ERA)

Arroyo may not have a huge winning streak rolling, but the rock star wannabe is lugging a scoreless streak through his last 14 innings or work. Arroyo pitched his second straight scoreless start in a 3-0 shutout of the Chicago Cubs Friday. It was the righty’s second win in a row and fifth victory in his last seven trips to the mound. Since the All-Star break, Arroyo is 3-2 with a 3.12 ERA.

Wandy Rodriguez, Houston Astros (9-11, 4.34 ERA)

Rodriguez has been all over the page this season, but seems to be finding his stride late in the summer. The Astros lefty is undefeated in his last four starts, going 3-0 with a 1.62 ERA and is 6-1 since June 24. Over his last three, Way-Rod boasts a skinny 0.42 ERA and 23 strikeouts. His last outing was a no-decision in a 6-5 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers in which the Houston bullpen spoiled a one-run, eight-hit effort from Rodriguez.

Slumping

Tommy Hanson, Atlanta Braves (8-8, 3.69 ERA)

Despite the Braves’ success in the NL East, Hanson has come up short in his recent starts. The young right hander hasn’t tasted victory since early July and is 0-3 in his last six outings. Hanson hasn’t pitched poorly, posting a 2.41 ERA in that span. He’s allowed only one run in each of his last three starts but hasn’t received enough from the Braves’ bats to back up those efforts. He gave up just a single run on three hits but took a no-decision in a 3-2 loss to the San Francisco Giants in his most recent start Friday.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Yankees at Texas Rangers (-156)

Arlington should just be considered another borough of New York, because the Yankees absolutely own it.

The Bronx Bombers are 36-16 in their past 52 against Texas, including 23-9 in the past 32 in the Lone Star State. Not only that, when the team faces left-hander Cliff Lee, it can tout that no squad has scored more runs (174) then them against South Paws this season.

Dig even deeper.

New York also is 10th in the league in batting average against lefties, hitting a respectable .266. The team also is second in home runs (39) and fifth in doubles (67) against lefty pitching.

And over the past three years, the Yankees are batting .286 against Cliff Lee. He did beat the Yankees in a start in New York in late June, but allowed four runs in the complete game.

“He’s pretty much the same every time you see him,” Derek Jeter told the Associated Press. “He’s a perfect example of a guy who’s going to come after you. He throws strikes, not going to hurt himself, doesn’t walk anybody.”

He won’t hurt himself. Jeter and the Bombers will do that for him.

Pick: Yankees

Colorado Rockies at New York Mets (-115)

Citi Field has been a graveyard for batters this season. The Mets pitching staff has defended its home field by ranking as the fifth-best home pitching team in the Majors.

Mets pitchers have a 3.06 ERA at home and have allowed just 161 earned runs in Queens – the second fewest in all of baseball for a home team. Opponents also are hitting a meager .248 off the hurlers.

And the bats come alive at home, too. The team is hitting .265 at home, 25 points higher than on the road, where the team has especially struggled this year.

Meantime, don’t ask the Rockies to even try to make contact away from Coors Field. Colorado is the second-best home hitting team in baseball, but is next to last in road batting average (.235) and 23rd in road runs scored (217).

The team even recently called a meeting to discuss a horrendous 22-35 road record.

"There aren't any answers," outfielder Dexter Fowler told MLB.com. "It's life."

And don’t expect life to get any easier in the Empire State.

Pick: Mets

This Day in Baseball
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On August 11 in Baseball History...

1907 - In the second game of a doubleheader, shortened to seven innings by prior agreement, St. Louis Cardinal hurler Ed Karger pitches a perfect game, 4-0, against Boston.

1926 - Tris Speaker of Cleveland hit his 700th career double but the Indians lost to the Chicago White Sox, 7-2. The double came in the third inning off Jim Joe Edwards.

1928 - Carl Hubbell's first major league victory is a 4-0 shutout of the Phillies. He'll be 10-6 down the stretch and will pitch 16 years with the Giants.

1929 - At League Park, Babe Ruth hits home run number 500 off Willis Hudlin of Cleveland.

1950 - Hitting just .279, Yankee great Joe DiMaggio is benched for the first time in his career. He is currently languishing in a 4-for-38 slump.

1951 - Robin Roberts of the Philadelphia Phillies beat the New York Giants, 4-0, dropping the Giants 13 1/2 games behind the first-place Brooklyn Dodgers.

1961 - Warren Spahn of the Milwaukee Braves scattered six hits to beat the Chicago Cubs, 2-1, for his 300th career victory.

1962 - The Dodgers protest the wetting down of the field at Candlestick, a tactic they claim is to stop Maury Wills. The Giants win 5-4, but the watering ploy earns Giants manager Alvin Dark the sobriquet The Swamp Fox.

1968 - Satchel Paige, 62 years or so old, and needing 158 days on a major league payroll to qualify for a pension, is signed by the Braves. He will not pitch a regular-season game for Atlanta and will become a coach on September 30.

1969 - Don Drysdale retires because of damage to his right shoulder. Drysdale is the last Los Angeles player left from the Brooklyn Dodgers. Bob Aspromonte, who will retire in 1971, is the last active former Brooklyn Dodger.

1970 - Jim Bunning notches his 100th NL victory, a 6-5 Phillies win over the Astros. Bunning is the first pitcher since Cy Young to win 100 games in each league.

1982 - Terry Felton (0-11) is the losing pitcher in Minnesota's 6-3 loss to the Angels, dropping his career record to 0-14, the worst individual start in major league history. Felton will never win a major league game, finishing his career with an 0-16 record.

1986 - Cincinnati player-manager Pete Rose singled four times and doubled to set a National League record with the 10th five-hit game of his career. The 45-year-old Rose drove in three runs in a 13-4 loss to the San Francisco Giants, to move one ahead of Max Carey for the record.

1987 - Mark McGwire of the Athletics broke Al Rosen's American League rookie record by hitting his 38th home run in Oakland's 8-2 loss to the Seattle Mariners.

1991 - Wilson Alvarez hurls a no-hitter in his second big league start as the White Sox stop Baltimore 7-0.

1998 - Mark McGwire homers off Bobby Jones in an 8-3 Mets win. The home run tops Hack Wilson's 1930 National League record of 46 home runs hit before September 1. In McGwire's 162 games with the Cardinals since a trade with Oakland on July 31, 1997, McGwire has a .275 batting average with 71 home runs and 146 runs batted in with 165 walks.

Tips and Trends
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Atlanta Braves at Houston Astros [2:05 PM ET]

Braves (-135, O/U 7.5): Atlanta currently leads the National League East division by 1.5 games, with a season record of 64-48 SU. The Braves are also contending for the overall best record in the National League, something quite important to them considering their home dominance this season. Away from home Atlanta is a different team, as they are only 25-33 SU this year. The Braves are +7.47 and +12.98 units both SU and on the RL respectively this season. Ace pitcher Tommy Hanson will make the road start today, as he is 8-8 with an ERA of 3.69 and a WHIP of 1.28 this year. Hanson has been plagued by little run support of late, something he and the rest of the Braves hope is a thing of the past. The Braves are 16-6 in their last 22 games against the National League Central. Atlanta is 2-5 in their last 7 road games against a left-handed starter. The Braves are 1-5 in their last 6 games against a starter with a WHIP greater than 1.30. The Braves are 4-1 in Hanson's last 5 road starts against a team with a losing record. Atlanta is 1-4 in Hanson's last 5 starts following a Quality Start in his last appearance. The Braves are 1-5 in Hanson's last 6 starts during game 3 of a series.

Braves are 0-5 last 5 road games against a team with a losing home record.
Under is 10-4 last 14 games overall.

Key Injuries - 2B Martin Prado (finger) is out.

PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Astros: Houston is in the midst of playing their best baseball of the season, a welcoming sign for the Astros faithful. It's been a long season, culminating in the trade of ace pitcher Roy Oswalt. However, Houston is playing their season out the right way, which is a pleasant surprise. Houston is 48-63 SU this season, good enough for 3rd place in the National League Central division. The Astros are +0.81 and -6.46 units both SU and on the RL respectively this season. Lefty Wandy Rodriguez has been dominant of late, sporting an ERA less than 0.50 and a WHIP of 0.80 over his past few starts. For the year, Rodriguez is 9-11 with an ERA of 4.34 and a WHIP of 1.40. The Astros are 4-0 in their last 4 games against the National League East. Houston is 13-3 in their last 16 Wednesday games overall. The Astros are 4-1 in their last 5 games against a team with a winning record. Houston is 7-0 in Rodriguez's last 7 Wednesday starts. The Astros are 7-2 in Rodriguez's last 9 starts against the National League East. The Astros are 20-8 in Rodriguez's last 28 home starts. Houston is 6-16 in Rodriguez's last 22 starts following a Quality Start in his last appearance. The Astros are 1-8 in Rodriguez's last 9 starts with 4 days of rest.

Astros are 6-0 last 6 home games against a team with a losing road record.
Over is 4-1 last 5 games against the National League East.

Key Injuries - SS Tommy Manzella (finger) is out.

PROJECTED SCORE: 4 (Side of the Day)

Boston Red Sox at Toronto Blue Jays [7:05 PM ET]

Red Sox (-110, O/U 8): Boston is staying in the playing chase in the American League East despite numerous injuries to their daily lineup. Boston has persevered, and stand 6 games behind the Yankees for the year at 64-49 SU. Boston is an impressive 30-26 SU this season on the road. The Red Sox are +0.39 and -5.42 units both SU and on the RL respectively this year. Offensively, Boston has struggled to score of late, totaling 6 runs in their past 3 games combined. Pitcher Clay Buchholz will make the road start tonight, as he is 12-5 with an ERA of 2.66 and a WHIP of 1.23 this year. The Red Sox are 5-1 in their last 6 road games against a right-handed starter. Boston is 6-0 in Buchholz's last 6 road starts against a team with a winning record. The Red Sox are 18-3 in Buchholz's last 21 starts following a Quality Start in his last appearance. The Red Sox are 6-1 in Buchholz's last 7 starts with 4 days of rest. Boston is 13-3 in Buchholz's last 16 road starts overall. The Red Sox are 4-1 in Buchholz's last 5 starts against the American League East. Boston is 23-7 in Buchholz's last 30 starts overall.

Under is 4-1 last 5 games during game 2 of a series.

Key Injuries - 1B Kevin Youkilis (thumb) is out.

PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Blue Jays: If Toronto was playing in any other division, they would be right in the think of a pennant race. Instead, the Jays are 10 games back of the American League East lead and in 4th place despite a season record of 59-52 SU. Toronto has won 7 of their past 10 games, and is an impressive 25-17 SU against their division foes. Toronto is +11.07 and +25.07 units both SU and on the RL this year. Pitcher Shaun Marcum will make the home start tonight, as he is 10-5 with an ERA of 3.44 and a WHIP of 1.18 this season. The Blue Jays are 8-1 in their last 9 games during game 2 of a series. Toronto is 5-1 in their last 6 games against a right-handed starter. The Blue Jays are 11-4 in Marcum's last 15 starts on grass. Toronto is 5-2 in Marcum's last 7 home starts overall. The Blue Jays are 11-5 in Marcum's last 16 starts. Toronto is 4-1 in Marcum's last 5 starts during game 2 of a series.

Daily Sports Roundup: August 11

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Cardinals and Reds continue their NL Central battle with a matinee in Cincinnati, while the Yankees look to beat the Rangers in Texas.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League schedule for Wednesday has Tampa Bay at Detroit, Kansas City at the Angels, Oakland at Seattle, Baltimore at Cleveland, Boston at Toronto, Minnesota at the White Sox, and the Yankees at Texas. Javier Vazquez (9-8, 4.63 ERA) is slated to get the ball for New York on Wednesday, while the Rangers will send Cliff Lee (10-5, 2.44 ERA) to the mound. Righthander Vazquez was tagged for a loss in his most recent start, giving up six runs (three earned) on six hits over 5 1-3 innings of work against the Red Sox. Lefthander Lee had no trouble with the Athletics in his last trip to the mound, giving up just one run on seven hits over his eight innings of work and striking out eight.

Meanwhile, the National League on Wednesday offers up Atlanta at Houston, the Dodgers at Philadelphia, Florida at Washington, Colorado at the Mets, Arizona at Milwaukee, Pittsburgh at San Diego, the Cubs at San Francisco, and St. Louis at Cincinnati. Adam Wainwright (16-6, 2.07 ERA) is set to take on Bronson Arroyo (12-6, 3.83 ERA) in that Cardinals/Reds contest. Righthander Wainwright blanked the Marlins over nine innings in a victory in his last outing, giving up just two hits while fanning seven batters. Righthander Arroyo is also coming off a shutout performance, holding the Cubs scoreless on five hits over seven innings of work last time out, striking out seven.

Bettors' best friend: Wednesday's wagering tips

Line to keep an eye on

Cardinals at Reds: The home team opened at +115 but now can be found as high as +122 at some books.

Weather to watch

Twins at White Sox: 40 percent chance of thunderstorms.

Marlins at Nationals: 30 percent chance of thunderstorms.

Cardinals at Reds: 40 percent chance of thunderstorms.

Who's hot

The Phillies are 14-3 in their past 17 games.

The under is 7-2 in Kansas City’s past nine games.

The over is 8-0 in the Cardinals’ past eight games.

Who's not

The Cubs are 2-14 in their past 16 games.

The Orioles are 15-50 in their past 65 road games.

The Diamondbacks are just 24-58 in their past 82 road games.

Key stat

3.7: Runs per game scored by the Mariners under fired manager Don Wakamatsu, the fewest of any team in the majors since the start of the 2009 season.

Injury that shouldn't be overlooked

Minnesota Twins starter Kevin Slowey will miss his next scheduled start against the White Sox on Wednesday due to soreness in his elbow. Manager Ron Gardenhire wanted to move up his entire rotation with an off-day on Monday, but both left-hander Francisco Liriano and right-hander Carl Pavano requested an extra day to rest their arms this week. That means 27-year-old Glen Perkins will make his first start of the season after failing to make the roster out of Spring Training. And the left-hander hasn’t been dominating at Triple-A Rochester. In his past two starts, he has lasted just 11.2 innings, yielding six earned runs on 14 hits while striking out just eight against four walks.

Game of the day

Los Angeles Dodgers at Philadelphia Phillies (-132, 7.5)

Notable quotable

"So far I like 'The Big Shamrock.' But I might go with 'The Big Green Mile,' too, I'm not sure yet." – Shaquille O’Neal on his preference for a nickname with the Boston Celtics.

Tips and notes

It could get really, really ugly for the Philadelphia Union on Wednesday against Real Salt Lake. The Union have lost their past two games by a combined score of 5-2 and allowed an MLS-worst 32 goals this season. However, the team has scored at least once in seven straight matches and nine of their past 10. Meantime, Real Salt Lake has scored an MLS-high 33 goals and has scored in three straight games. In the team’s only meeting earlier this season, RSL ripped the Union, 3-0. Over, anyone?

Keep paying attention to the Mets and the under. Outfielder Jason Bay, who was hitting just .259 with a meager six home runs when he went on the DL two weeks ago, is not close to returning to the lineup. "All I know," manager Jerry Manuel told MLB.com, "is that there has not been any activity." Nearly as bad, Rod Barajas is not close to returning after being sidelined more than two weeks ago with an oblique strain, leaving rookie Josh Thole to handle the catching duties. Over the past 10 games, the team is averaging just three runs per game, with four of the team’s past seven games falling below the total.

The New York Yankees aren’t playing with scrubs, but the team has seen better days. Second baseman Robinson Cano is battling a cold that kept him out of the lineup on Tuesday and could keep him on the bench for another game or two. Manager Joe Girardi also isn’t sure what to do with outfielder Curtis Granderson, whose speed is a rarity in the team’s lineup, but is hitting just .206 against lefties this season. On Tuesday, he was glued to the bench. Also out of the lineup is first baseman Mark Teixeira, who is staying back in New York with his wife, Leigh, who gave birth to the couple’s baby boy on Tuesday. Girardi expects him to join the team later this week in Kansas City. But just when remains a mystery. If you are playing the Yankees, look very close at the lineup until the first pitch.

Wednesday's six-pack

-- Rookie Hellickson blanked Detroit for seven innings, as Rays won at Comerica 8-0. Hellickson is an upgrade over Wade Davis.

-- A's loaded bases with none out in first inning, but got only three more in eight innings against Felix Hernandez in a tough 2-0 loss.

-- Orioles are now 7-1 under Buck Showalter. Impressive.

-- Atlanta's Brooks Conrad has six HRs this year, all in the 8th inning or later, as he campaigns to become a folk hero in Fulton County.

-- Mike Pelfrey ended a five-start skid by blanking Colorado for seven innings in a 1-0 Met win. Tough loss for Ubaldo Jimenez.

-- Florida got six runs in 4.1 innings off Strasburg in 8-1 win before only 26,000+ fans, smallest crowd to see Strasburg pitch.

************************************************** *******

Wednesday's List........Our summer look at ACC football

Boston College-- 30-18 in ACC last six years, have eight starters back on offense, six on defense; soph QB is older dude who played pro baseball. 12-4 as road dog since '03. Four starters back on OL (three seniors start). Had 8-bowl win streak snapped, losing last two bowls 16-14/24-13.

Clemson-- Lost three of last four bowls, despite being favored in all four. Seven starters back on offense, six on defense; soph QB started 10 games LY, first time in five years Tigers completed less than 50% of its passes. . 11-3 vs spread as underdog since '05. Four starters back on OL.

Duke-- Will miss QB Lewis, who set 49 school records; soph Renfree is back from knee surgery, was 34-50 LY. Just 9-17 as a home dog last five years. Nine starters back on offense; hosting Alabama this year. Their last bowl game was '94, last bowl win was 1960, in Cotton Bowl.

Florida State-- New era begins with eight starters back on offense, senior QB (22 starts) but their best WR is off team. Just 7-18 vs spread as home fave last five years. Bobby Bowden won three of last four bowls, scoring 36.8 ppg, but problem is, they were second tier bowls.

Georgia Tech-- Tech 13-4 in ACC under Johnson, 9-2 vs spread on road, running ball for 273-295 ypg, but one-dimensional attack stalled in bowls, losing 38-3/24-14. Experienced senior QB with 25 starts, but three new starters on OL. Haven't completed 50% of their passes since 2003.

Maryland-- Slipped to 2-10 LY, are 3-13 vs spread as home favorite since '04. Seven starters back on offense; junior QB has only two starts. Three sophs start on OL. Won four of last five bowls, scoring 30.2 ppg. Opener with Navy in Baltimore is only teams' second meeting since 1965.

Miami-- Over .500 in ACC LY, first time since '05; just 7-14 vs spread in game following a loss last five years. Starting two sophs on OL 1-3 in last four bowls, scoring only 13.8 ppg. Playing Ohio State/Pitt on road out of conference, an unusually tough non-conference slate.

North Carolina-- 19 starters back, four on OL, senior QB, but guys from NCAA been snooping around this summer. Just 10-19 vs spread as home fave last 10 years, 8-15 as fave anywhere since '05. Lost Charlotte bowl last two years by combined total of 3 points; last bowl win was 2001.

NC State-- Disappointing 16-21 in O'Brien's first three years, are 5-17 as home favorite since '03. Junior QB has 23 starts, but three new starters on OL, with three sophs starting. Have been minus-11 or worse in TOs four of last six years. Nine of their 12 opponents played in bowls last year.

Virginia-- New coach is from I-AA Richmond, who Cavs open up against. Coordinators are in from NFL. Senior QB with 10 starts, six starters back on both sides of ball; 3-7 vs spread as favorite last three years. Al Groh was 59-53 in his nine years at UVa, not the easiest place to win.

Virginia Tech-- Lose seven starters on defense, but have senior QB with 28 career starts; 8-3 vs spread as underdog since '04. Last six years, are +60 in TO ratio, +34 in last three. Last time Tech had less than 10 wins was '03. Top five rushers, top five receivers back this season.

Wake Forest-- Going back to option; new QB played WR LY, as Skinner was 4-year starting QB. Slipped to 5-7 LY after going 28-12 three years before that. 9-2 as home dog since '04. Seven starters back on defense, so LY's 26.3 ppg allowed (4s back) should be fairly easy to improve upon.
