LONDON (AFP) - Mankind's only chance of long-term survival lies in colonising space, as humans drain Earth of resources and face a terrifying array of new threats, warned British scientist Stephen Hawking on Monday.

"The human race shouldn't have all its eggs in one basket, or on one planet," the renowned astrophysicist told the website Big Think, a forum which airs ideas on many subjects from experts.

"Our only chance of long-term survival is not to remain inward looking on planet Earth, but to spread out into space," he added.

He warned that the human race was likely to face an increased number of events that threaten its very existence, as the Cuban missile crisis did in 1962.

The Cold War showdown saw the United States and Soviet Union in a confrontation over Soviet missiles deployed in Cuba, near US shores, and brought the world to the brink of nuclear war.

"We are entering an increasingly dangerous period of our history," said Hawking.

"Our population and our use of the finite resources of planet Earth are growing exponentially, along with our technical ability to change the environment for good or ill."

If we want to survive beyond the next century, "our future is in space," added the scientist.

"That is why I'm in favour of manned, or should I say 'personed', space flight."

His comments came after he warned in a recent television series that mankind should avoid contact with aliens at all costs, as the consequences could be devastating.

The sun will eventually get too close to the earth and kill everything on it. ; That's a given.

It could possibly end sooner from other causes as well.

And if the Road Warrior says it, it must be true..

what's amazing to think about is how close we are, all the time, to life ending as we know it. a biological weapon is either intentionally or unintentionally exposed to the public, an aggressive strain of a known virus pops up... add to that our apparent want of overpopulation and the stress it puts on our resources. definitely not something i worry about, but interesting.

Maybe the people on Earth were planted here by humans from somewhere else, for the reasons Stevie mentions ?

Im going to use Hawkings line to the next married woman I hit on..

"Come on baby, dont worry about sleeping with just one guy for the rest of your life. The world is going to end soon and every single human will be wiped off the face of the earth. Lets just enjoy life and enjoy the NOW!"

Steve has a point but this will take some time.

Let's start small and try to really put a man on the moon by 2020.

I think SH is way over-rated ! Why can't he cure his condition if he's so smart ?

We got no option with dealing with aliens if they come ( again) . This Ain't the USA saying Cuba doesn't exist !

If the aliens come it would me much more like "Independence Day" if they were hostile to Earthlings.... no chance really

WTF SH ? Let's not answer the door if they come.....they'll go away like a bill collector ?

"Explorers" are usually benign right ? like Chrissy Columbus !

Oops they were Pirates !

The space pirates ( if hostile) will come and take what they want here....like a bear to a beehive for the honey.

Maybe the people on Earth were planted here by humans from somewhere else, for the reasons Stevie mentions ?
GALAN VOLCANO, ARGENTINA (Reuters) – A lake in Argentina's remote, inhospitable northwest may offer clues on how life got started on Earth and how it could survive on other planets, scientists say.
Researchers have found millions of "super" bacteria thriving inside the oxygen-starved Lake Diamante, in the center of a giant volcanic crater located over 15,400 feet above http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20100811/sc_nm/us_argentina_lake_science#
The bacteria's habitat is similar to primitive earth, before living and breathing organisms began wrapping a protective atmosphere of oxygen around the planet.
The conditions -- which include high arsenic and alkaline levels -- could also shed light on life beyond Earth.
"This is of great scientific interest as a window to look to our past and also for a science called astrobiology, the study of life on other planets," said Maria Eugenia Farias, part of the team that discovered the life-forms in Lake Diamante earlier this year.
If bacteria can survive here, the theory goes, it could also survive somewhere like Mars.
So-called "extremophiles" have been found in other parts of the world -- and they can have significant commercial value. Bacteria that break down lipids are used in detergents for example.
But Farias said these bacteria, called "polyextremophiles" are exceptional because they flourish in the harshest of circumstances.
"What we have here is a series of extreme conditions all in one place. And this is what makes this place unique in the world," said Farias, a microbiologist at the National Scientific and Technical Research Council in Tucuman province.
The lake sports levels of arsenic 20,000 times higher than the level regarded as safe for drinking water and its temperature is often below freezing. But because the water is so salty -- five times saltier than http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20100811/sc_nm/us_argentina_lake_science# -- ice never forms.
The bacteria's DNA mutates to survive the ultra-violet radiation and low oxygen levels found at such high altitudes, which could make it of interest to the pharmaceuticals industry, Farias said. It could also have future commercial applications in products such as sunscreens, she added.
Farias and her team are looking for Argentine funding to produce a metagenome of the bacteria, an advanced study which provides a DNA sequence of the entire microbe colony.
This would enable her crew to study the bacteria in Argentina and help ensure that the South American country keeps hold of potentially lucrative patents for new antioxidants or enzymes that could be derived from the bacteria.
