charged with assault

Mets star closer Francisco (K-Rod) Rodriguez was arrested after Wednesday night's game for assaulting his father-in-law, police sources said.

Rodriguez and his wife's father brawled in a tunnel just outside the Mets clubhouse in the moments following the team's 6-2 loss to the Colorado Rockies.
The father-in-law suffered facial abrasions and was taken by ambulance to Flushing Hospital shortly after the 10:15 p.m. incident, police said.

Rodriguez, 28, was charged with third-degree assault, police said.
Moments before the explosion with his family, Rodriguez snapped at reporters who asked why he was not summoned to pitch in a bases loaded situation in the 8th inning.
Investigators believe the emotional closer threw at least one punch during the altercation, which spilled into the hallway outside the team's Family Lounge

Rodriguez was yelling as he was pushed back from the lounge into the hallway, which was crowded with people, including many woman and children, waiting for players after the game.

Team security arrived and stopped foot traffic in the hallway as they pulled the pitcher from the group and hustled him back into the clubhouse.
When approached and asked about the scene in the hallway, the visibly angry Rodriguez snapped, "Mind your own f-----g business," to a reporter who witnessed the altercation.
Rodriguez then left the clubhouse but was taken into NYPD custody a short time later.
The Mets confirmed their star had an alteration with a relative but referred all further questions to the NYPD.

Francisco Rodriguez Arrested For Beating Up Father-In-Law In Clubhouse

The Mets closer is in police custody and charged with assault after sending his father in law to the hospital after the Mets' loss tonight.
The Mets would only confirm to us that an altercation took place in the clubhouse after the Mets' 6-2 loss, and that it involved a member of the team and a family member.
But witnesses say K-Rod's father in law suffered facial bruises and minor head injuries, and was transported from Citi Field to a local hospital in an ambulance.
Rodriguez was visibly upset in the bullpen and after the game, after he was not used in the eighth inning as the Mets gave up a lead. He cursed out a member of the media. The alleged fight with his father-in-law occurred later.
Rodriguez has a history of incidents with the team. Last year, he got into a scuffle on the team bus with executive Tony Bernazard, and exchanged words with Yankees reliever Brian Bruney during batting practice after the two traded barbs in the media.
Earlier this year, K-Rod and bullpen coach Randy Niemann had to be separated after the two clashed on how he should be used in a game.
More on this as it develops.

Another lost season for the Mets and it is only mid-August. Well at least they are entertaining.

When I read that story about him this morning I said to myself "who didn't see something like this coming".

He's always been an explosive mentality, couple that with the fact he's a grade 'A' jack-ass, one has to wonder, what took so long?

K-Rod is out at home - and he's not
welcome at Citi Field either.

Hot-headed Mets hurler Francisco Rodriguez was suspended without pay for two games and barred from his Long Island home Thursday after the brutal beatdown of his father-in-law.

The one-sided fight began when Carlos Peña challenged Rodriguez's manhood and insulted his mother after the crazed closer began shouting about the latest Mets loss, police sources told the Daily News.

"Stop acting like a baby," one source quoted Peña as telling the volatile Rodriguez inside a Citi Field lounge designated for players' families. "Man up, and play better."

K-Rod's mother told Peña to keep his mouth shut, prompting a screaming match in Spanish between the pair, the source said.

"You can't talk to my mami that way!" Rodriguez shouted before landing the first of many punches in the Wednesday night mismatch.

The 6-feet, 195-pound hard-throwing righty pinned the defenseless Peña against a wall outside the Mets' clubhouse while raining blows on his head and face, prosecutors said.

Stadium security, after hearing the 53-year-old's howls, yanked the four-time All-Star away, officials said.

The beating occurred in full view of Peña's common-law wife, along with the children and girlfriends of other players.

K-Rod left the ballpark in his white Lamborghini, returning 15 minutes later - only after a Mets employee reached him by cell phone.

"He slapped his father-in-law around and then bolted," a police source said. "People were shouting after him, 'Hey, you can't leave,' but he got in his car and left...Dumb on and off the field, I guess."

Rodriguez, who sources say denied throwing the first blow, swapped his glove for a pair of handcuffs as he walked silently into Queens Criminal Court about 16 hours after the attack.

He wore a white button-down shirt and designer jeans after spending the night in police custody at Citi Field

His terrified wife, Daian, and her battered dad were "very fearful of the defendant returning to the home," Queens prosecutor Kristen Kane said in getting an order of protection against K-Rod.

Rodriguez, who battled Mets coaches, management and opponents in his two years with the team, has a history of domestic violence, Kane said.

There was an order of protection in his native Venezuela and another incident in California, she said.

Criminal Court Judge Mary O'Donoghue barred Rodriguez, 28, from the family home. He was permitted a single visit with police supervision to retrieve his belongings before tomorrow.

His father-in-law, while visiting from Venezuela, is staying at the house with his daughter and her 11-month-old twins. Daian Peña broke down in tears yesterday at the Old Brookville, L.I., home.

Her father, released from the hospital earlier, sported a huge welt on the right side of his forehead. He suffered bruises, contusions and a stiff neck.

Rodriguez will not suit up for tonight's game against the Phillies.

"Ownership and the organization are very disappointed in Francisco's inappropriate behavior and we take this matter very seriously," Mets owner Jeff Wilpon said.

The Mets won yesterday without their jailed closer, as Johan Santana - facing a lawsuit in a Florida rape case - pitched a 4-0 shutout.

Rodriguez, accused of assault and harassment, stands to lose $125,683 of his $11.5 million salary. He faces a year in jail, and is due back for a Sept. 14 hearing.

Rodriguez, flanked by court officers, ducked into a waiting SUV after court and didn't say a word.
