What prompted me to ask this question is the local station here just played that great underrated Squeeze song "Pulling Mussels From A Shell" and I can listen to that Jools Holland funky piano solo in it a thousand times.

Now I am not saying Holland is the greatest of all time, that would be wrong, but he ranks.

In the 70's the epic argument was Wakeman or Carl Palmer.
I rank ELP's Carl Palmer over Rick Wakeman because Yes used synthesizers, Carl Palmer used nothing artificial.

Then a little later you had the Billy Joel versus Elton John debate.
No debate, Billy Joel kicks John's ass on keyboards, now if the question was who is the better showman, no question it's John, but Joel musically is worlds better.

Al Kooper belongs in this debate, so does Ray Manzarek (Doors)
Steve Winwood is and was amazing, so was Billy Preston.

What about Dennis DeYoung? Booker T? Brian Eno before the genius behind the scenes could play lights out, Bruce's man "The Professor" Roy Bittan has to get some love, PigPen from the 'Dead?

Who's your guy behind that piano, playing those black and whites?

How can you guys even have this discussion without mentioning Liberace? To date he's the only musician I've seen pull off perfectly-timed arpeggios in 64th-notes in a live performance.

I personally liked Neal Doughty of REO Speedwagon, but all the ones mentioned so far are great keyboard players...

Rock? Jonathen Cain. Journey really took off when he joined the band and he also played a major part in writing the songs.

Well, actually he is a Jazz musician though.

Rock wise? I would have to say Billy Joel . The riffs he comes up with are amazing. I had a concert album of his that I used to listen as a kid to all the time called "songs in the attic" . It's incredible.

Speaking of Jazz that is a great book to play at. ^_^

Rob, he ain't known as the "Piano Man" for nothing.
Greatest live speed piano playing ever performed.

Enjoy, p.s. he was and always will be 'my guy'

Gregg Allman
Ray Manzarak
Richard Wright

2 rock (pardon the pun) solid choices.
Allman never got full props for his piano playing, Manzarak (the only living Door) made Morrision musically. (Morrison as a writer needed no help what so ever however)
