cant be the best player in the majors this year if he cant close them out. absolutely choked in the us open like watney did today and now this has to be one of the most devastating #18's in recent memory

i really hope this guys career doesnt go downhill from all this as he really is a very good player that should be in the running for more majors down the road.

Thats BS ppl were standing in that bunker when his ball went in.

Officials should have over ruled it.

He should not have been penalized but this thing of ours dictates they follow the rules...before letting some player off for some irrelevant nonsensical technicality. The guy has been nothing but consistent for 4 months, but he's gotta learn how to bear down when it counts.....

No...they were warned all week of these unraked bunkers that were well outside the ropes.....they were told they could include footprints and even tiremarks. Sucks ass but his caddie or somebody has to remind him that he IS in a bunker. Even if it looks like a litter box

Okay i saw the interview too Bet monkey nice post an hour later? wtf

What I am saying is where was the official to say hey you are in bunker. They should have over ruled because he did not ground the club when he addressed the ball, he rested his club when the sun came through the crowd.

he was about to step back.

too bad for the kid - he's a player hope he comes back from this one too...

I liked his comment afterwards.

He said the only thing that would have been worse would have been if he had made that gimme putt on 18 to (seemingly) win before having it ripped from his hands.

Instead of the crowd yelling-- You Da Man, Get In The Hole, Go Tiger....they could have yelled

"You are standing in a bunker don't ground your club"!!!!

David Feherty was right when he said the area that Dustin Johnson hit from looked like a manger. There was splashed out sand mixed with grass all over that area. Pete Dye and the sandman got carried away when he built that course.

my cousin was on the 18th and had his drive sail right over his head. Here was his email to me this am

You just had to see it from his perspective - he walks up a narrow chute through thousands of people and his ball is sitting on a little sandy patch covered by loose grass. It looks just like the rest of the trampled area (which has a sandy base) and he could not see the rest of the "bunker." I doubt any of the folks standing there knew whether it was a bunker.

We started a "let him play" chant and one guy wrote "Not a bunker" on a little piece of cardboard and dropped it in there for Faherty. When everyone dispersed it was clearly a bunker but I guarantee Johnson had no earthly idea.

these guys were told of the different circumstances several times before and during the tourney. Rules were posted in areas that they normally were not. no excuse for him or his caddie to at least consider the fact it could have been a bunker. Christ, there is 1200 of them on that course. It is not the officials resp. to make him aware. Only if he were to ask. Unfortunate for him but he also should not have hit his drive 50yds right.

Whistling Straits is the only course that I've seen where there are so many bunkers that they let the public walk through them and trample them down and splash the sand throughout the course. This borders on the ridiculous. And they call that course Dye's best work? Please.

Dustin Johnson got hosed. That was a horrible ruling. There's no way that's a bunker. None. I would have loved to seen him tell the PGA to shove it up their ass by putting down a 5 for that hole and then signing and turning in his scorecard. Obviously he would have then been disqualified and not gotten any prize money so he handled it very well. I just heard some of his comments and he still doesn't see how that's a bunker. He's right. It was just a bad decision by the PGA. His fellow players know it but no one will come out and call out the PGA for their obvious mistake. They don't want to bite the hand that feeds them.

it doesn't matter how many people were walking all over it. Its his job to know or make sure his caddy knows where all the bunkers are there is nobody to blame but himself. I dont get paid to golf and try to get out atleast twice a week and I make sure I know where the bunkers are.

But you also don't have 20,000 people lining the fariway watching your snap hook drives :) Bad comparison but I tend to agree with your view. The big issue is with the course. I was outraged seeing and hearing that people could just walk through the bunkers. WTF?? An easy fix..Treat all those bunkers that are not greenside as waste bunkers. In this case you can ground your club. I guarantee when they are back in 2015 that will be the rule.
