In all my years of watching sports I have to say that Namath is probably the most overrated athlete I have ever seen. It is not his fault, but people just had this love for him, including the number one idiot of all time, Howard Cosell. Even in his guaranteed win, he pretty much handed the ball off to Matt Snell all day, his individual performance was nothing special. At the time nobody wanted to give credit as to how good the AFL had become. Even the next year I think I got over 2 touchdowns when the Chiefs beat the Vikings.

SPOT ON

Joe completed a misearable 50.1% of his passes........and I believe he threw nearly 50 more INT's than TD'S.....and he had no wheels.

His QB RATING is under 70.0!

Namath retired after playing in 77 wins, 108 losses and 3 ties...............LOL

In 1999, SPORTING NEWS named him one of the top 100 players of all-time.

fishhead- alot of it has to do with the era in which they played. Broadway joe just had the appeal and fan support that built him up alot better than he was. His career stats are kinda blah, but everyone just loved him back in the day and his legend grew. I compare it alot to the way they talk about archie manning, who im surprised is not in the hall of fame (from how they talk about him), eventhough his stats are below .500

take for example eddie george vs floyd little (who played in the 60's and just got into the hall of fame)

eddie george- 10,441 rushing yards, 2,227 receiving yards, 78 combined touchdowns

floyd little- 6323 rushing yards, 2418 receiving yards, 3416 kr/pr yards, 54 combined touchdowns

so eddie george has more combined yards (without ever being a pr/kr guy) and 25 more combined touchdowns than floyd little, but i highly doubt eddie george makes the hall of fame, even though i think he should

MORE GAMES NOW

But this doesn't hide the fact that Joe won only 77 games, had a 51.1% completion percentage, and threw way more Int's than TD's.

Granted this is all part of the equation, but playing in NY and being hyped by their media made him appear greater than he actually was.

Very average QB, and certainly not HOF material.

of course he is not in for his stats...............he almost singlehandedly made the game of today what it is............his called shot(superbowl 3) showed that "inferior" AFL could compete and that the merger would work...........his nightlife antics tapped into half the population that didnt watch football, women.....he was more of a cartoon type pioneer character that came along at the perfect time and won the biggest game in NFL history....for this alone he is a HOF'er
