Virginia-based chain Five Guys takes top honors among Zagat voters

According to the latest Fast Food Survey by Zagat, the best burger in America comes from Virginia-based chain Five Guys. But while the regional chain edged out national players in the hamburger category, Dairy Queen rules the Best Milkshakes category, while the best fries still come from McDonald’s.

The results of the survey were revealed live on TODAY Monday. The survey covered 136 fast-food and full-service chains nationwide. Voting on zagat.com, 6,518 voters weighed in on everything from chicken and cheeseburgers to smoothies and seafood. Full survey results are available at zagat.com/fastfood.

“I think the headline is Five Guys,” Zagat Survey CEO Tim Zagat told TODAY’s Ann Curry. “It’s a chain that has 500 outlets, but that’s small. But it’s growing.”
Zagat admitted that Five Guys’ victory “was a big surprise to me, because I’ve never yet eaten a Five Guys burger.” But McDonald’s taking the french fries honors came as no surprise, he said: “It’s almost expected every year — McDonald’s, McDonald’s, McDonald’s. Our surveyers voted for them overwhelmingly. I personally like them better.”

The survey divided fast-food venues into four categories: Large Chains (up to 5,000 U.S. outlets), Mega-Chains (more than 5,000), Full-Service Chains (with table service) and Quick-Refreshment Chains (focusing on beverages, frozen treats and the like). Wendy’s is this year’s Top Food champion, dominating the Mega-Chain category.

“People think of Wendy’s as the square burger, but actually they do just about everything else right [too],” Zagat said.

Also holding onto its title is West Coast burger chain In-N-Out Burger, which again took Top Food among Large Chains. New to the survey is regional seafood chain Bonefish Grill, which took top honors in the Full-Service category, while Ben & Jerry’s prevailed in the Quick-Refreshment category.

The year’s winners for Top Healthy Options are Subway (Mega-Chain), Jason’s Deli (Large Chains), Jamba Juice (Quick-Refreshment) and Bonefish Grill (Full-Service). “They’re quick, they’re convenient, they’re reasonably priced,” Zagat said of Subway. But their most important quality, he added, was their “combination of fresh ingredients and a healthy end product.”

Taking home the prize for Best Value among fast-food establishments is McDonald’s, which also got top honors for Best Value Menu, Most Child Friendly and Best Drive-Thru. “At the end of the day, they do it for a very low price,” Zagat said of McDonald’s. “Their Dollar Menu speaks for itself.”

The remaining top-ranked values among fast-food chains are (in order) Panera Bread, Chipotle, Taco Bell and Chick-fil-A. The top three full-service winners for Best Value are Olive Garden, Cracker Barrel and The Cheesecake Factory.

For coffee lovers, it’s still all about Starbucks, which won the Best Coffee category for the second year in a row, beating out (in order) Dunkin’ Donuts, McDonald’s, Peet’s Coffee & Tea and Caribou Coffee. “Starbucks: The name says great coffee,” Zagat told Curry. “Peet’s is an excellent coffee chain, but so far they’re not everywhere, and Starbucks is.”

I disagree with a few things on this list, but outback as best steak. Really? The hillbillies they surveyed must have never heard of Ruths Chris or Maestros. For my money, if I'm going to buy a steak it sure wouldn't be at outback

There's a 5 Guys here down the road in Westport.
Same chain, now it may not be the worlds best, but it's still a great burger at a great price.
Always packed, from the second they open the door in the morning.

There's a couple Five Guys near me now, tried it recently for the first time. I gotta admit it was good. A couple more visits and I may have a heart attack, but it was definitely a good burger. If I'm gonna shorten my life on burgers, it's not a bad way to go.

Outback is terrible. Just awful. Cannot believe that one. They must have some top-notch marketing.

Regarding Ruth Chris, you are correct, it's not even a top 5 steakhouse in NYC, and it struggles to make the top 10 in NYC.

Regarding Outback, if you compare their steak to the other similar chains (TGIF, Ruby Tuesday, Applebys, etc.etc.) it's a very good steak, if you keep in that family style restaurant genre, it's a good steak, but that's like comparing Red Lobster to Legal Seafood though.

you are right. I could name 5 better steakhouses in socal off the top of my head, but ruths chris is an international chain much like those listed above. As far as chains go, you'd be hard pressed to find better. If you are ever in socal let me know and I'll point you in the right direction

I don't agree with this list at all. In N Out Burgers stand apart from the competition. Nothing else on the planet taste like In N Out but you can walk into any corner burger joint and it tastes just like Five Guys. About the only I do agree with is Long John Silvers having the best fried fish for a chain.

Aren't you in the Chicago area? There's at least two around here that I know. One in Deer Park (near Barrington) and another in, I think, Rolling Meadows (by Randhurst Mall). There may be others.

I like Wendy's fries much better than any of the others. I like McDonald's fries 2nd.

Someone should come up with some steak fries for fast food.

Five Guys if fine, for a fast food joint. But there are many better burgers at restuarants. Five Guys fries 2nd? That's a joke! They are greasy and soggy! They come in a paper bag that is soaked in grease by the time you get back to the table (from picking them up at the counter).

Agree that it's ridiculous to see Outback as "best steak". Ruth's Chris, Charlie Palmer, Morton's (among many others) are a much better steak among "chains".

Couldnt agree more about in-n-out, but this is a east coast biased poll ( much like the AP lol). There are no bonefish grills with 500 miles of CA, yet that's in-n-outs base. Had five guys a couple years ago. Doesn't hold a candle to In-n-out IMHO
