i think hay hauling was my favorite....paid pretty decent and fun sometimes....remember one year my uncle was driving the truck that carried the hay, he got good and drunk and took it for a spin while it was loaded down with hay (in the pasture, only thing in danger of getting hit was the cows), cutting doughnuts in the middle of the field....he was let go later that evening

I worked the hay fields too. Threw the bales on the flatbed behind the tractor. The guy who got us the job always got to drive the tractor while we threw the bales. I guess privilege has its place. When we got to the barn some guys got to be in the barn in the shade while the rest of us were out in the hot sun. We finally convinced them after bitching about it that it was our turn in the barn. Assholes.

Also worked picking weeds in bean fields.

Had a job working as a cook in my friend's parents' cafe during high school. That lasted about 3 years. Helped pay for gas and pinball. I didn't need anything else since I got one meal of junk food at the cafe for free.

I had a paper route. I remember the paper used make me collect a % of my own pay from the dead beats that didn't mail in their checks.

My first real job was at Burger King when I was 15 but before that I used to put flyers on windshields for some of the local businesses. Of course more flyers made it into the dumpster than on the windshields.

none of the jobs i had when i was real young were great, but after high school i worked at a small chain of video stores in the metro-boston area, and aside from getting paid 32k a year to watch flicks all day, the best part was the comraderie... we were all 18-35, we were incestuous, had badass parties, would close a store at 1am, go to foxwoods ll night and open at 10am... it was great.

When I was 17 I had a summer job working at Sturm Ruger (they make guns) up the street. My man job was writing down the serial numbers of the guns as they were packed into individual boxes. The year was 1969. I had dreams of being a hippie and here I was packaging guns surrounded by hardcore rednecks. I went to Woodstock that summer and when I got back, the guys wanted to know all about it. Of course what they wanted to know about was did I get any from those "free love chicks". Sadly the answer was no. A very bizarre work experience, but I have to say a really nice bunch of guys.

Dug graves in grades 7-9. Only used a pick and shovel back then and no machines. It was a lot of
hard work on a hot summer day. I started off cutting grass then dug foundations and then buried
people before I got.to dig graves. If you got to dig graves you made it to the top.
Had several paper routes starting when I was 8.

My first job was pumping gas. Wash the windows, check the oil, tire pressure, etc. No such thing as self service back then.

Cleaned chicken houses, after the chickens got full grown Chicken catchers would come by and catch all the chickens then myself with about 4 other guys would have to shovel all the piss and shit sawdust into wheel barrels and wheel it out, so new saw dust could be spreaded through out the chicken house. Not bad in the winter time, but in the dead heat of the summer it was HOT as hell and stinch was so bad it would choke a dead goat.

9 years old started being a gopher for my dad in the family side business installing fences and building recrooms. Dad worked 3rd shift for airline, come home and we would fence all day. Learned a work ethic from him. Cut lawns for about 4 wealthy families during the same period. My mom would drive me every weekend 1/2 hr to the jobs. Had to turn people away eventually.

Was a great way to learn about working for ones self and what it takes to be successful. Showing that to my boys now. A lost character in todays world. kids will work, not hard, and want top dollar. All this put me through college and worked for the man for 4 years and moved up quickly but very unhappy and just picked up and left to work for myself once again. Should write a book about everything available out there to help an entrepreneur get started. I am talking free professional help. If you have an idea, check with local universities as they provide services through the students as projects.

Funny you say that. After I moved out from home, my parents tried to get local high school kids to mow their lawn since they started their own business, traveled a lot, etc. Not only did they have a hard time finding kids who even wanted to do manual labor, but they wanted some insane amount like $100 to mow their yard (maybe 3/4ths of an acre) and pull weeds...and every one of them always did a half-assed job. My dad got so fed up he just bit the bullet and decided to find the time do as much of it as he could himself.

I think it's hard to appreciate the real value of a dollar if you haven't done some sort of manual labor at some point in your life. I did plenty of construction, landscaping, etc in college...and even though my career today has zero manual labor involved, I'll never forget what it feels like to bust ass day in and day out.
