Famed home run hitter Bobby Thomson dead at 86

NEW YORK (AP)—Famed home run hitter Bobby Thomson has died at age 86.
Thomson’s death was confirmed Tuesday by the funeral home in Savannah, Ga., that is handling the arrangements. He had been in failing health for several years and died at home Monday night.

Thomson hit one of the most storied home runs in baseball history. His “Shot Heard ‘Round the World” won the 1951 National League pennant for the New York Giants and beat the Brooklyn Dodgers.
Thomson’s death was first reported by the New York Daily News.

That one homer gave Bobby a charmed life but he made it happen and justly reaped the rewards. I was always fascinated by the story of how it brought Thomson and Ralph Branca together later in life..

I can remember laying on the front porch swing & listening to the game on the radio, i about shit when the announcer said that thompson had hit the game winning home run. I wasn't a fan of either team but way back then the world series was really something special, regardless of who was playing, sure brings back a lot of memories.

I was sitting in the lobby of the DeGinc Hotel, @ Harmon AFB, NFLD, and went nuts. Big Giants fan, my Father in Law was Brklyn nut, I hated him so I was elated. Almost 60 yrs ago, been quite a trail & trial I've led since that moment. "To all the girls I loved before", thanks Willie.
