Yes, it is best to drive there.

A quick 35 minute drive from where you live.............one of the best kept secrets in the valley, but not like 20 years ago.

Incredibly awesome!!!

Literally hundreds of hiking trails, many very demanding(be in shape)........and there is actually one where you can hike up the mountain for 6 hours and camp out for the evening.

There is a LODGE up there with outstanding food(a tad expensive) and serves wild game(rabbitt, elk, deer, snake, etc.) but also traditional food............very good and a must stop if going to Mt Charleston.

In the winter, the ski lodge opens and one can ski on a couple really nice slopes.

The temps at MT. CHARLESTON will run on average 20-25 degrees cooler than Vegas........so when its 104 in Vegas, its a beautiful 80 degrees on the Mountain

One of the best things I enjoy at MTCHAR is the fresh air, something not common in the valley...........

GREAT hiking, FRESH air, COOL, good FOOD, GREAT scenery and very few people around are all great reasons to visit Mt Charleston on at LEAST a BI-WEEKLY basis if you live in the NW section of Vegas as you do. Heck, when I lived in Green Valley(SE), i still managed to go up there 1-2 times per month.........HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMEND.........EVEN MORE SO THAN RED ROCK CANYON

I just hiked the Cathedral Ledge trail three weeks ago and they still had snow at the higher elevations. Melt off creates small waterfalls/runoffs. Fill up your bottle for the freshest water in Las Vegas.

This time of year, I would give Mt Charleston a big plus over Red Rock as it's still pretty hot in Red Rock. Fish pretty much told it 100 % correct. You and your friend will love it as a relief from the heat and hustle bustle of Vegas ! Weekends sometimes bring smaller crowds to escape the heat. Winter skiing is available but most skiers head to Utah for far better slopes.

I went up to Mt. Charleston with some friends today. This picture below was taken at the road turning off Hwy 95 onto the road that goes up to Mt. Charleston:

The picture below was taken in the residential area of Mt. Charleston. It was raining a little bit up there.

You could smell the pine in the air. There was also some hint of sage as you could see some sage brush up there as well.

The picture below is of the residential area there:

This is a valley up there that has houses in the background if you look carefully enough:
