Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Washington Nationals at Philadelphia Phillies (-110, 8)

The betting public continues to jump on the Stephen Strasburg bandwagon despite his recent struggles. That's why the last-place Nats are a virtual pick-em against the surging Phillies.

In his two starts since returning from the DL, the rookie righthander is 0-1 with a 6.67 ERA. He hasn't lasted more than five innings and has given up two homers.

Is he good? Absolutely. But great? Not yet.

"I don't think we saw his best stuff," said Arizona's Adam LaRoche, who took Strasburg deep in his last outing. "I think he was a little erratic at times."

Strasburg will be on a pitch count again today, so even if he is effective it isn't likely to last for long. It is his first start against the Phillies, who are hammering righties to the tune of .274 in their last 10.

With Chase Utley back in the lineup and the Phillies trying to make a run at the first-place Braves, look for them to take it to the rookie - even if his name is Strasburg.

Pick: Phillies

Seattle Mariners at New York Yankees (-235, 9)

Picking winners in baseball is easy. Finding value? Not so much, which is why this game strikes us as a possible money-making opportunity.

All signs point to a Yankees' win since they're 27 games ahead of the M's. But Seattle may be in position to pull an upset today in the Bronx.

It all starts on the mound, where lefthander Jason Vargas takes the ball for the Mariners. The lefty is 3-0 over his last three starts, posting a 2.84 ERA over that stretch. His previous win before the streak came on June 22 so Vargas truly is riding a hot streak.

The Yankees counter with Javier Vazquez, who has fallen on hard times lately. The righthander is 0-2 in his last three starts with a 7.24 ERA during that span. It took him 106 pitches to get through the fourth inning in his last outing.

The M's are batting better against righties lately (.267 in their last 10) and are getting their third look at Vazquez this season. He is 0-1 in two starts against the M's this season. The Yanks are coping with injuries and the fallout from Roger Clemens' indictment.

Logic may point to the men in pinstripes but the pitching matchup presents a chance to double up thanks to the knee-jerk betting public.

Pick: Seattle

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

Kevin Slowey, Minnesota Twins (11-5, 4.22 ERA)

Slowey was pulled after seven innings of a no-hit bid in his last outing to protect his arm. The tendinitis may show up on the MRI, but not on his ERA. In his last three starts he is 2-0 with a 1.59 ERA. He will likely be on a pitch count again today.

Kevin Correia, San Diego Padres (10-7, 4.63 ERA)

Correia has turned it on since the All-Star break, going 5-1 with a 3.00 ERA in his six starts since the Midsummer Classic. The righty has been particularly impressive in his last three starts, going 3-0 with two scoreless outings and striking out 12 batters to only three walks.

Slumping

Tim Lincecum, San Francisco Giants (11-7, 3.62 ERA)

"The Freak" has lived up to his nickname for all the wrong reasons in his last three starts, going 0-3 with a freakish 9.00 ERA during that spell. He's lasted four innings or less in his last two home outings, allowing 11 earned runs in just 7 2/3 innings. On the bright side, the Giants are 9-3 in his last 12 road starts so maybe a change of venue will do him good.

Freddy Garcia, Chicago White Sox (10-5, 5.07 ERA)

Garcia got knocked around for five earned runs in five innings of work in his last start against the Tigers, extending his cold streak since the All-Star break. The righty's ERA has ballooned to 8.84 over his last five starts.

1917 - Now with Philadelphia, Chief Bender, 34, pitches his third straight shutout, winning 6-0 over the Cubs. In his last active season, Bender will turn in four shutouts, finishing 8-2 with a 1.67 ERA.

1926 - Ted Lyons of the Chicago White Sox pitched a no-hitter over the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park, winning 6-0 in a quick 1 hour, 7 minutes.

1931 - Babe Ruth hits his 600th home run, off George Blaeholder of the Browns, as the Yankees win 11-7.

1975 - Pitching brothers Rick and Paul Reuschel combine to hurl the Cubs to a 7-0 victory over the Dodgers. This is the first time brothers have collaborated on a shutout.

1982 - Milwaukee's Rollie Fingers records his 300th career save in a 3-2 win at Seattle, becoming the first player to reach that milestone.

1986 - Spike Owen had four hits and became the first major leaguer in 40 years to score six runs in a game as the Boston Red Sox routed the Cleveland Indians 24-5 with a 24-hit attack.

1989 - Cubs rookie outfielder Jerome Walton goes 0-for-4 in a 6-5, ten-inning loss to the Reds, ending his hitting streak at 30 consecutive games.

Daily Sports Roundup: August 21

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Giants take on the Cardinals in St. Louis, while the Steelers battle the Giants, and the Sprint Cup Series hits the pavement at Bristol.

Colliding on the gridiron . . .

The NFL plays the bulk of its Week 2 preseason schedule Saturday, with Baltimore at Washington (-3), Miami at Jacksonville (-2), Kansas City at Tampa Bay (-2.5), St. Louis at Cleveland (-3), the Jets (-1.5) at Carolina, Oakland at Chicago (-1), Detroit at Denver (-3), Dallas at San Diego (-3), Green Bay at Seattle (-1), Houston at New Orleans (-1), and Pittsburgh (-4) at the Giants. Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will see his first action of the year on Saturday, while Dennis Dixon and Byron Leftwich will continue their battle behind Big Ben in the pecking order. The Giants will be without both Eli Manning and Jim Sorgi on Saturday, leaving the bulk of the QB duties for Rhett Bomar.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League schedule for Saturday offers up Seattle at the Yankees, the Angels at Minnesota, Cleveland at Detroit, the White Sox at Kansas City, Toronto at Boston, Tampa Bay at Oakland, and Texas at Baltimore. Cliff Lee (10-6, 2.77 ERA) is set to take on Brad Bergesen (4-9, 5.80 ERA) in that Rangers/Orioles matchup. Lefthander Lee was knocked around by the Rays in his last trip to the mound, giving up six runs on nine hits over 7 2-3 innings of work. The O's also beat Lee back on July 10 (six runs over nine innings). Righthander Bergesen is coming off a no-decision against the Mariners in which he surrendered three runs on nine hits over 5 1-3 innings pitched.

Over in the National League on Saturday it's then Atlanta at the Cubs, the Mets at Pittsburgh, San Diego at Milwaukee, Houston at Florida, Washington at Philadelphia, Colorado at Arizona, Cincinnati at the Dodgers, and San Francisco at St. Louis. The Giants will give the ball to ace Tim Lincecum (11-7, 3.62 ERA) in that last contest, while the Cards counter with Chris Carpenter (13-4, 2.95 ERA). Righthander Lincecum will be looking to bounce back from a pair of rough outings against the Cubs and Padres in which he gave up 11 earned runs on 16 hits over just 7 2-3 innings of work. Righthander Carpenter fell to the Cubs last time out despite giving up just three runs over six innings.

Roaring around the track . . .

The drivers of the Sprint Cup Series will compete under the lights on Saturday night in the Irwin Tools Night Race at Bristol Motor Speedway. Jimmie Johnson is pegged as the 11/2 sportsbook favorite for Saturday's race, with five-time Bristol winner Kurt Busch just behind him on that list at 13/2 odds. Kyle Busch, who won this race last season, is pegged at 7/1 odds to visit victory lane on Saturday night, while Jeff Gordon (another five-time Bristol winner) is at 14/1. Standings leader Kevin Harvick is sitting at 12/1 odds.

Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, there are two WNBA games on tap for Saturday, with Chicago at Tulsa and Los Angeles at Seattle. The Sparks and Storm last met on July 3 in Los Angeles, with Seattle picking up a 75-62 road win as an 8.5-point favorite. Lauren Jackson was good for 20 points for the Storm that game, and Kristi Toliver scored 18 points for the Sparks

Saturday's six-pack

-- CJ Wilson got 36 called strikes from umpire Nelson, tying the season high for any pitcher, as Texas blanked the Orioles. Not suprisingly, the O's RF Markakis was tossed for arguing after his third strikeout.

-- What is it with the Rangers? Wilson/Cliff Lee are only pitchers to get 36 called strikes in a game this season.

-- Roy Halladay won his sixth straight start, 1-0 over the Nationals.

-- Reds won, St Louis lost, as Cincinnati adds another game to its lead in the NL Central. Reds snapped a 12-game losing streak to Dodgers in Chavez Ravine, where manager Baker played much of his career.

-- Armando Galarraga allowed only four hits in 16 shutout innings vs Cleveland this season. Funny thing is, he can't beat anyone else.

-- Maybe I'm just getting old, but every time I see one or both of the Bengals' WRs on TV, I just want to puke. Interviewing them during the game on sidelines sends wrong message to kids. Me-me-me-me-me.

********************************

Saturday's List of 13: Some of my favorite movie quotes........

-- "Kids are starving in India and you're walking around with a sombrero full of peanuts." Bill Murray in Meatballs.

-- "God likes me!!! He really, really likes me!!!!" Richard Dreyfuss as a degenerate gambler having a very good day in Let It Ride.

-- "I didn't come halfway to the bleeping Arctic Circle to lose to these goons." Ed Lauter as coach of the Hamilton Mustangs in Youngblood.

-- "You didn't come into this world to sit on the bench. Get your ass out there and play." Walter Matthau in The Bad News Bears

-- "Of course its hard!!! If it was easy anyone could do it. The hard is what makes it great" Tom Hanks in League of Their Own.

-- "Just follow your heart son. You'll do fine." Robin Williams' parting words to Matt Damon in Good Will Hunting.

-- "Nothing ends well, or else it wouldn't end." Bryan Brown in Cocktail.

-- "I'd rather be with you people, than the finest people in all the world." Fred Willard, as the hapless mayor in Roxanne.

-- "Make it a good one, Strap." Gene Hackman to a religious player as he knelt in prayer before the critical sequence in Hoosiers.

-- "Life is about the six inches in front of your face. On this team, we fight for those six inches......." Al Pacino in Any Given Sunday.

-- "You know Joel, sometimes you just have to say 'What the bleep!!!"" Rebecca DeMornay to Tom Cruise in Risky Business.

-- "Thats the name of the game. Put the ball in the hole." Bob Cousy as an athletic director in Blue Chips, as he makes seven straight free throws as he talks with his coach (Nick Nolte) who ad libs the line "Don't you ever miss?" The scene was shot in one take. .

-- "If you give in now, you might lose. Never bleep with a winning streak." Kevin Costner giving advice in Bull Durham.

Bettors' best friend: Saturday's wagering tips

Lines off the board

Braves at Cubs: Total is off pending wind speed and direction at Wrigley Field.

Lines to keep an eye on

Steelers at Giants: Giants opened as 2.5 favorite but line has moved by more than a touchdown in favor of the Steelers at -4, primarily after the announcement that suspended Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger would see action for the first time this season. Total opened at 36 but has plunged to 33.5.

Dolphins at Jaguars: Line opened as a pick-em but the Jags are now at -2. Total fell from 37 to 36.

Texans at Saints: Saints opened at -2.5 but are now at -1 at most books. Total jumped from 40.5 to 41.

Raiders at Bears: Bears opened at -2.5 but are now at -1 at most books. Total dipped from 34.5 to 33.5.

Cowboys at Chargers: Chargers opened at -1.5 but are now at -3.

Packers at Seahawks: Seahawks opened at -1 but spread has doubled to -2.

Rays at Athletics: A's opened at +117 but have been bet down to +103.

Angels at Twins: Total opened at 9 but has jumped to 9.5.

Astros at Marlins: Marlins opened at -125 but are now down to -110 at most books.

Padres at Brewers: Total opened at 8.5 but it has climbed to 9.

Rangers at Orioles: Orioles opened at +233 but have been bet down to +195.

Blue Jays at Red Sox: Total opened at 9 but has slipped to 8.5.

Reds at Dodgers: Total opened at 7.5 but has dipped to 7.

Weather to watch

Braves at Cubs: 60 percent chance of thunderstorms.

Giants at Cardinals: 80 percent chance of thunderstorms. Wind blowing out to left/center field at 10 mph.

Indans at Tigers: 60 percent chance of thunderstorms.

Astros at Marlins: 40 percent chance of thunderstorms.

Who's hot

Padres are 10-1 in their last 11.

Twins are 9-1 in their last 10.

Braves are 7-2 in their last nine.

Phillies are 9-0 this season vs. Nationals.

Reds have won five in a row.

Who's not

Astros are 1-8 in their last nine vs. Marlins.

Indians are 2-12 in last 14 at Tigers.

Pirates are 1-10 in their last 11.

Cubs are 2-7 in their last nine.

Diamondbacks are 1-6 in their last seven.

Key stat

.000 - Atlanta Braves All-Star catcher Brian McCann's lifetime batting average against Chicago Cubs starter Tom Gorzelanny. The All-Star Game MVP, a career .290 hitter, is 0-for-10 lifetime against the lefty.

Injury that shouldn't be overlooked

Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Edwin Encarnacion was scratched from Friday's lineup with soreness in his left wrist and is questionable for today's game against the Boston Red Sox. The scary thing about a wrist injury is it can appear to go away until the player picks up the bat again. Encarnacion, 27, is hitting .243 with 13 home runs and 36 RBIs in 255 at-bats.

Game of the day

Blue Jays at Red Sox (-130, 9)

Notable quotable

"Sadness. Sadness. I mean, if Roger was impersonal to me, where I'd never gotten to know him, I'd say, 'That's what you get.' You know? But knowing him personally and feeling close to him, it's sad. It certainly is, and I don't know anything else I can say about it."

Former New York Yankees manager Joe Torre, now with the Los Angeles Dodgers, said of former player Roger Clemens' federal indictment for perjury about his use of performance-enhancing drugs.

Tips and notes

Texas Rangers starter Rich Harden will be activated from the disabled list in time to start Monday's game against the Minnesota Twins. The oft-injured right-hander has made just one start in August after being placed on the DL with a shoulder injury. Harden allowed a run over six innings while striking out 10 in his last rehab start with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Wednesday. Harden, 28, has struggled for most of the season, going 4-4 with a 5.45 ERA in 15 starts.

Tiger Woods committed to play in the first event of the FedEx Cup playoffs. Woods confirmed Thursday that he will tee it up in The Barclay's, which gets underway on Aug. 26. Woods is the defending championship of the four-event series that offers a $10 million prize to the victor. The top 125 players on the PGA Tour are eligible to compete in The Barclay's. Woods, still clinging to the top spot in the World Golf Rankings, is currently ranked No. 108 on the Tour.

Serena Williams has pulled out of the upcoming U.S. Open after severely cutting her foot last month. Williams is a three-time winner at Flushing Meadows, and would have been the No. 1 seed and favorite this year. She was eliminated in last year's semifinal and hasn't played since beating Vera Zvonareva in straight sets in the Wimbledon women's final July 3. Her absence will likely move Kim Clijsters, maria Sharapova and Venus Williams atop the odds board.
