Piniella was set to retire at the end of the season, anyway, but it's a shame to see him go out like this. Piniella's reign in Chicago obviously didn't go as he had hoped, but he's had a nice managerial career that includes a World Series championship with the Reds in 1990. Third base coach Mike Quade, not bench coach Alan Trammell will manage the team for the rest of the season. Quade will be considered for the full-time job after the season, along with Triple-A manager Ryne Sandberg and a host of other candidates.

wow...could be safe to bet on cubs then...mike cuaty wont be on autopilot being indifferent to outcome......guys will be playing for spotsd next year and he will be actually trying to win games other than just pull their own weight to get to a total like lou was doing

"Old" Lou needs to step-down for an assortment of reasons; I am sad that one of them is because of the health of his mother.

good-bye SWEEt LOU!! Sorry to hear of mothers failing health. Now he can enjoy his grandchikdren and the fishing in ALASKA he always wanted to do!! Good memories for me of Lou at wrigley___WINNING isnt everything!!!!:howdy:

Lou will be spending more time in the Tampa Bay area.....his home town. He went to Tampa Jesuit where he played his high school ball.
