------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Cubs at Washington Nationals (-123, 8.5)

If there is one things the Cubs can do well – and they can’t say it about much – it’s hit the absolute heck out of left-handed pitching.

The loveable losers have scored a staggering 162 runs against South Paws this season, the eighth-most in the league. The Cubbies also are hitting a staggering .280 against lefties this year – the highest average in baseball and seven points higher than the next closest team.

And not only is the team hitting, but raking for power.

Chicago has 86 doubles and 36 home runs against lefties this season and a National League-leading .449 slugging percentage against them.

“It’s about making adjustments,” Marlon Byrd told ESPN.com. “When they come in looking at the film, they have to figure out what they’re looking at and fix it the next time out. The learning curve up here is tough.”

John Lannan and the Nationals won’t be graded on a curve on Tuesday night.

Pick: Cubs

Oakland Athletics at Cleveland Indians (+101, 7.5)

This one might be so low scoring that it seems like the teams aren’t even using bats.

Overall, Oakland has a 49-66-8 over/under record and has seen six of its past 10 fall short of the total. Cleveland is 58-60-6 overall against the total and has gone 3-3 against the number the past six.

Meantime, neither offense is setting the world on fire. Both teams are in the bottom seven of the Majors in runs scored, with both struggling to just put the ball in play. The Athletics are hitting just .256 and the Indians are even worse at .247.

And then there’s the starters. Cleveland hurler Faustio Carmona may be struggling, but has shut down Oakland in two starts against them this season, yielding a meager four runs over 14.1 innings. Oakland’s Gio Gonzalez also has been dominant against the Indians, allowing no earned runs over 13.2 innings.

"When he commands both sides of the plate with the fastball, he's deadly because his curveball is so good," Oakland second baseman Mark Ellis said of Gonzalez to the San Jose Mercury News. "He's grown up every time he goes out there, keeping his composure.”

Pick: Under

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streakers

R.A. Dickey, New York Mets (8-5, 2.41 ERA)

The 35-year-old knuckleballer has been absolutely dealing his past two starts.

Dickey, who has a special glove he makes his catchers wear, has gone 17.1 innings combined his past two starts, including one complete game. Over that span he has allowed only two earned runs and struck out 13 against only two walks.

There actually is a Yahoo! Answers question entitled “Who the Hell is R.A. Dickey?” Don’t get caught asking the same thing.

Travis Wood, Cincinnati Reds (4-1, 2.51 ERA)

The 23-year-old South Paw has been dynamite for the upstart Reds this season.

Wood has won his past four starts by being economical with his pitches and inducing lots of fly ball outs. In his four victories he has forced 48 fly ball outs compared to just 20 ground balls. This is a huge reason he has allowed only six earned runs over his past 24.2 innings.

"Everything was feeling pretty good," Wood told the Associated Press. "We're playing well right now. Hopefully we can carry it over and just keep moving on with it."

Slumping

Carl Pavano, Minnesota Twins (4-3, 5.01 ERA)

The mustache has taken several big hits in his past two starts.

Well, to be totally fair, he allowed only one home run the last two times he took the mound, but it was the 24 other hits he yielded over his past 12.1 innings Over that span he has allowed nine earned runs and has failed to throw at least 100 pitches in either outing.

"Maybe I'm getting a little too much of the plate and the ball's up a little bit or maybe I'm being a little too predictable as far as my pitch sequences," Pavano told the Associated Press. "It's something I'm going to have to revisit and look at and make some adjustments, that's for sure."

Rodrigo Lopez (5-11, 4.94 ERA)

The right-hander has seen better days.

The over has hit in his past three straight starts with opponents finishing with at least five runs in each of those outings. Overall, he has allowed 13 total runs over his past 15 innings.

He also has allowed a combined three home runs the past two times he toed the rubber.

This Day in Baseball
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On August 24 in Baseball History...

1894 - Chicago catcher Pop Schriver becomes the first player to catch a ball dropped from the top of the Washington Monument.

1905 - The Chicago Cubs beat the Phillies at Philadelphia 2-1 in 20 innings behind the complete game pitching of Ed Reulbach.

1918 - Secretary of War Newton D. Baker grants an extended exemption to players in the World Series. Three days later the National Commission gets an official approval to play from General Enoch Crowder, providing that 10 percent of the revenues go to war charities.

1919 - Cleveland pitcher Ray Caldwell is flattened by a bolt of lightning in his debut with the team. He recovers to get the final out of the game, and defeats Philadelphia, 2-1.

1940 - Left fielder Ted Williams of the Boston Red Sox pitches the last two innings in a 12-1 loss to the Detroit Tigers. Williams allows three hits and one run but strikes out Tiger slugger Rudy York. Joe Glenn, who caught Babe Ruth's last pitching appearance in 1933, is Williams'catcher.

1943 - The Philadelphia Athletics drop their 20th game in a row, losing to Chicago 6-5. This ties the American League record. They dodge the bullet in the nightcap by scoring eight runs in the second inning to win 8-1.

1945 - Cleveland ace Bob Feller returns from the Navy and attracts a crowd of 46,477, who watch him strike out 12 and yield only four hits in a 4-2 win over Detroit's Hal Newhouser. He will get nine starts during the remainder of the year, including a one-hitter and a pair of four-hitters.

1951 - In another of Bill Veeck's legendary PR stunts, "Fans Managers' Night," a thousand fans behind the Browns dugout are given yes and no placards to vote on decisions by the Browns coaches. The fans coach the Browns to a 5-3 win over Philadelphia.

1971 - Ernie Banks hit the 512th and final home run of his career as the Chicago Cubs beat the Cincinnati Reds 5-4. Banks' shot came off Jim McGlothlin in the first inning.

1975 - After stealing second base in the seventh to add to his major league record of 38 consecutive steals, Davey Lopes is nabbed in the 12th inning by Montreal catcher Gary Carter. The Expos beat the Dodgers in 14 innings 5-2.

1982 - Kansas City's John Wathan steals his 31st base of the season in a 5-3 win over the Rangers, breaking the single-season record for catchers set by Ray Schalk in 1916. Wathan will finish the season with a career-high 36 stolen bases.

1983 - After six Major League seasons playing infield positions, Oriole Lenn Sakata moved behind the plate to catch relief pitcher Tim Stoddard who had also just entered the game. The Blue Jays looked to capitalize and Stoddard was ready picking off at first base in order Barry Bonnell, Dave Collins and Upshaw to record all three inning outs.

1983 - First baseman Pete Rose does not play in Philadelphia's 5-3 loss to the Giants, ending his consecutive games played streak at 745. Manager Paul Owens had planned to use Rose as a pinch-hitter in the 10th inning, but Joel Youngblood ends the game with a two-run home run off Steve Carlton in the bottom of the ninth.

1989 - After weeks of legal wrangling, Commissioner Bart Giamatti permanently bans Pete Rose from baseball for his alleged gambling on major league games. Although the five-page document signed by both parties includes no formal findings, Giamatti says that he considers Rose's acceptance of the ban to be a no-contest plea to the charges.

Daily Sports Roundup: August 24

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Rays continue their series against the Angels in Los Angeles, while the Reds look for a victory over the Giants out in San Francisco.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League schedule for Tuesday offers up Oakland at Cleveland, Kansas City at Detroit, the Yankees at Toronto, Seattle at Boston, Minnesota at Texas, Baltimore at the White Sox, and Tampa Bay at Los Angeles. Wade Davis (9-9, 4.45 ERA) will get the ball for the Rays on Tuesday, while the Angels counter with Ervin Santana (13-8, 3.93 ERA). Righthander Davis (sore shoulder) is expected to come off the disabled list for Tuesday's start; he was knocked around by the Twins in his last outing on August 5, allowing six runs over six innings of work. Righthander Santana has picked up the win in each of his last three starts, holding the Red Sox to two runs on four hits over seven innings last time out. Los Angeles is 5-1 in Santana's last six starts.

Over in the National League on Tuesday it's then St. Louis at Pittsburgh, Houston at Philadelphia, the Cubs at Washington, Florida at the Mets, the Dodgers at Milwaukee, Atlanta at Colorado, Arizona at San Diego, and Cincinnati at San Francisco. Tim Wood (4-1, 2.51 ERA) is slated to go up against Jonathan Sanchez (9-8, 3.47 ERA) in that Reds/Giants matchup. Lefthander Wood won for the fourth straight time in his last start, surrendering just one run on four hits over 6 1-3 innings against the Diamondbacks. Lefthander Sanchez dazzled the Phillies in a win last time out, giving up just one run on two hits over his eight innings of work. Sanchez walked two and fanned seven that day

Bettors' best friend: Tuesday's wagering tips

Line to keep an eye on

Yankees at Blue Jays: The total opened at 10 and now sits at 9.5.
Weather to watch

Twins at Rangers: There is an expected 11 mph wind blowing in from left center field.

Braves at Rockies: There is an expected 10 mph wind blowing in from right center field.

Cubs at Nationals: 50 percent chance of rain.

Houston at Philadelphia: 30 percent chance of rain with a 12 mph wind blowing in from center field.

Oakland at Cleveland: There is an expected 10 mph wind blowing across the diamond from first toward third.

Marlins at Mets: 30 percent chance of rain and an expected 15 mph wind blowing in from left center field.

Mariners at Red Sox: 30 percent chance of rain with a 15 mph wind blowing in from center field.

Reds at Giants: There is an expected 10 mph wind blowing from the third base line toward right center field.

Who’s hot

The Twins are 21-6 in their past 27 games.

The over is 15-5-1 in the Brewers’ past 21 games.

The Rays are 26-10 in their past 36 games as a favorite.

Who’s not

The Pirates are just 18-51 in their past 69 games.

The under is 10-1 in the Mets past 11 games.

The Orioles are 18-53 in their past 71 road games.

Key stat

2: Times a pitcher has thrown a perfect game and then lost against that team later this season. After Dallas Braden lost 3-2 to the Rays, he joined Roy Halladay, who lost to the Marlins, as the only two pitchers to earn the distinction since Sandy Koufax in 1965.

Injury that shouldn't be overlooked

Saturday night was the first time since May that the Phillies had their one through eight hitters from Opening Day together in the lineup. That didn’t last long. Nursing a slim lead over the Cardinals, the Phils had to sit Placido Polanco on Monday because of soreness in his left elbow – the same elbow that put him on the 15-day DL earlier this year. Losing Polanco would be a huge blow to Philadelphia, as he is hitting .317 with six home runs and 41 RBI.

Game of the Day

Cincinnati Reds at San Francisco Giants (-103, 7)

Notable quotes

"If you guys want to talk about football, we'll talk about football. But to keep on talking about things outside of football to me is completely ridiculous. I did have a conversation with him. If you want to talk about football, we'll talk about football." – Redskins coach Mike Shanahan on being done discussing Albert Haynesworth.

Tips and notes

Know why it’s the year of the pitcher? Because managers are letting their pitchers stay on the mound longer. This season, 58 pitchers are averaging at least 100 pitches per start, up 42 percent from this same time last season. It also is the first time in more than a decade at least 58 hurlers have broken the century mark for their average pitch count. Don’t expect that number to dip as teams need to rely on their best players coming down the stretch.

How important is the rushing attack to the Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints? The defending champions actually ran the ball more times last season than the run-heavy Baltimore Ravens. But the ground game has popped a serious tire in the Big Easy. Running back P.J. Hill suffered a triceps injury against the Texans and will go on IR if no one claims him off waivers. Lynell Hamilton already has been put on IR and Mike Bell signed this offseason with Philly. After Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush, the next options are Ladell Betts, Chris Ivory and DeShawn Wynn. The second half of the team’s next two preseason games will be ugly.

Things just got a little stickier for South Carolina. Coach Steve Spurrier just suspended tight end Weslye Saunders indefinitely and the standout player’s availability is in question for the season opener against Southern Miss on Sept. 2. Saunders, a senior, is regarded as the top prospect at his position in the draft and losing him would be a big blow to the Gamecocks, who are listed at -14 against the Golden Eagles.

Tuesday's six-pack

-- Of the 120 Division I college football teams, 68 made money LY.

-- Out of those 68, only 14 athletic departments turned a profit.

-- Check out Joey Votto's stats; what a season he's having, just about as good as Albert Pujols, which is pretty damn good.

-- Jason Heyward reached base 10 consecutives times before making an out in 7th inning at Colorado last night.

-- Jose Bautista hit his 40th HR Monday; his previous high? 16.

-- According to a website that graphs such things, if Bautista played his home games in Boston, he'd have four more HRs. If he played for Detroit, he'd have seven less dingers.

************************************************** *******

Tuesday's List: Handicapping trends for all the NFC teams.......

Arizona-- 16-8 at home last three years, after being 24-32 in seven years before that; are 13-5 in NFC West last three years, 14-16 in other games. Over last five years, over is 12-3 in their last three games of year. With Kurt Warner retired, have to improve running game that has ranked 28th or worse in each of the last five years.

Atlanta-- Had first-ever back/back winning seasons LY; are 12-2-1 as a single digit favorite last three years, 13-6 vs spread in last 19 games on natural grass- they covered 14 of last 20 vs AFC teams. Weird schedule in that they don't play division rival Carolina until Weeks 14-17.

Carolina-- Very inexperienced at QB with Delhomme gone; lost four of last five home openers (were favored in four of five). They're 26-15-1 vs spread in divisional games last seven years, 13-8 vs spread in game after a loss. Panthers won't pay a coach big $$$; Fox is likely a lame duck.

Chicago-- Over last decade, 14th is highest Bears ranked in yardage thru air; that should change with Martz coaching Cutler; they've been ranked higher than 23rd in scoring once in last 10 years. 1-8-1 as road underdog last two years, 5-14-2 vs spread after a win, 11-18-2 as road underdog vs non-divisional opponents.

Dallas-- Over last decade, are 15-23-2 vs spread vs AFC teams, 3-8 as a double digit favorite since '07. In last five years, over is 12-7-1 in their first four games of season- they averaged 36 ppg in first two games of last three years. Are 6-2 as road dog vs non-divison foes since 2005.

Detroit-- Minus-37 in turnovers last four years, ranked higher than 24th in rushing once in last nine years. Lion QBs been sacked 212 times last four years. Detroit is 5-11-1 vs spread on grass, 7-21-2 vs spread in the rare games they played in the week following winning a game.
