Came across this fun post while surfing a cyber trail from coverage related to "Many Americans believe President Obama to be a Muslim"

Started to give it a dismissive pass before suddenly realizing that "I" believe in at least three of those listed

I post if for friendly-spirited discussion here at the Rx with a similar friendly request that Comments be limited only to those "beliefs" listed below. Save your hot "Obama"-related beliefs for the Rx PoliticoSatirePub, please

Things People Believe

Adrian Arroyo observed yesterday that writing about odd American beliefs about politics would benefit from some context. According to Gallup, lots of Americans believe lots of weird stuff:

weirdbeliefs-1.jpg

What’s more, that’s not just a group of overlapping people. Instead “A special analysis of the data shows that 73% of Americans believe in at least one of the 10 items listed above, while 27% believe in none of them. A Gallup survey in 2001 provided similar results — 76% professed belief in at least one of the 10 items.” I’ll admit that I’m a lot more open to the view that Barack Obama is secretly a Muslim than to the view that the spirits of dead people can return in certain situations.

Oh, the (for now) 72 comments listed below the linked coverage above provide some further level of often wry amusement.

BTW,

I've been on the Oregon coast getting out of this damn heat. If only I had enough cash to live up north in the summers and down here in the winters...

Easy now....no need to hijack this towards general religious beliefs, though a few in the Lead Post tilt kind of that way.

If we're talking straight religion, that's a whole 'nuther list of Things People Believe

Barman,

Have you changed your beliefs over the last couple years?

Well not the one you cited above (communicating mentally with a very select group of people who have passed from this plane) and that includes as well your second pasted reference wherein I stated (and still believe) that active spiritual communication is possible between human beings and Jesus Christ. Pretty much the same belief in two different applications.

I still can't figure out what you are saying though...

"I’ll admit that I’m a lot more open to the view that Barack Obama is secretly a Muslim than to the view that the spirits of dead people can return in certain situations."

But then in 11/2008 you say that you communicate with your dead mentor?

I can dig it....Our visit to Steamboat Springs (northern Colorado) this past Memorial Day has greatly inspired me to persist with private business efforts that could give us legitimate means to do that region for three to four months a year, with Florida and elsewhere at six months.

YES INDEED....As of today, I no longer believe - as I did in the offseason of MLB 2008-9 - that BJ Upton was a surefire TopTen fantasy baseball selection.

Ahh... now it makes sense...

I believe all of those things are possible except for astrology. Notice I didn't say I necessarily believed in those things. I believe there may be a scientific explanation for some of those things that we may not know about yet.

I remember watching Leonard Nimoy's "In Search of..." and he was investigating a possible haunted cave or basement or something. He said that perhaps it is possible that the stones recorded the actions of Roman soldiers there hundreds of years ago much in the same way other media can record things. Then, certain conditions can play back the recording.

27%er here...

spent years studying primates/anthropology/evolution and we humans are just glorified ants in my opinion...everything else is just a means for us to deal with our mortality and that which we have yet to explain with science...no offense to those who believe in this stuff though, to each his own.
