Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Seattle at Boston (-138, 7.5)

Can somebody give Felix Hernandez a little help here? The 24-year-old has allowed just a single unearned run over his last three starts while striking out 31 and he still picked up a loss.

That has been the story of his season. Hernandez’s record is nothing special at 9-10, but he also owns a 2.51 ERA with 183 strikeouts. Seattle is giving him just 3.1 runs of support per outing.

Meanwhile, Jon Lester has no one to blame but himself for his most recent start. Lester lasted just two innings against the Toronto Blue Jays last week, giving up nine earned runs and two dingers while throwing only 37 total pitches before hitting the showers.

Pick: Mariners

Houston at Philadelphia (-330, 7.5)

Houston’s J.A. Happ makes his first start against his former team on Wednesday and gets a tough matchup with the Phillies rolling out ace Roy Halladay. Happ has gone 2-3 with a 4.62 ERA since joining the Astros, marking the first time he has made five straight scheduled starts this year.

"I don't really know why I never got that so to speak," Happ told reporters of never being given a set spot in the roster with the Philadelphia. "I felt like I would have been fine there. I felt like I could have had that there also. I don't see why it would have been any different. But to be on a team that wants you to pitch every five days is definitely a nice thing. I'm going to give them everything I've got, and hopefully they'll appreciate that."

Happ definitely has Roy Halladay’s approval. Upon hearing Happ was on his way to Houston, Halladay texted friend and Astros pitching coach Brad Arnsberg to say the Astros were going to be very happy with the young lefty.

Pick: Under

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

Felix Hernandez (9-10, 2.51 ERA), Seattle Mariners

If Felix Hernandez played for pretty much any other team in the league, he’d probably be mentioned as a Cy Young candidate. The 24-year-old hasn’t allowed more than three runs in a single start since June 8 and is 2-1 over his last three, allowing one unearned run over that stretch.

Hernandez also has 31 strikeouts over that span.

Ryan Dempster (11-8, 3.56 ERA), Chicago Cubs

Dempster has been the one constant for the Chicago Cubs this year. He heads into this matchup with the Nationals having gone 2-0 with a 2.11 ERA with 16 strikeouts in his last three starts. Dempster has allowed just five combined earned runs over his last five trips to the hill.

He went eight innings allowing two earned runs while sitting down seven batters in his most recent outing, a 5-3 loss to Atlanta in which he picked up a no-decision.

Slumping

Jason Marquis (0-6, 11.39 ERA), Washington Nationals

Marquis heads into Wednesay’s game still in search of his first win of the season after allowing at least five runs in four of his six 2010 starts to date. However, there are signs that he might be finally getting it together. He allowed just a single earned run over five innings against Philadelphia last week, but took a 1-0 loss against Phillies ace Roy Halladay.

Over bettors have cashed in on five of Marquis’ six starts.

Returning

Jeff Niemann (10-3, 3.12 ERA), Tampa Bay Rays

Niemann is set to make his first start after coming off the DL with a sore shoulder. He had won three of his last four before hitting the shelf on Aug. 3.
Niemann has one win in three lifetime tries against Tampa Bay, putting up a 5.51 ERA.

This Day in Baseball
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On August 25 in Baseball History...

1891 - The Boston National League club shocks the baseball world by announcing the signing of King Kelly away from the rival Boston American Association club, thereby wrecking peace talks between the leagues. Kelly signs through the 1892 season for a total of $25,000, a figure that will not be topped by any player until the Federal League war of 1914 and 1915.

1922 - The Cubs beat the Phillies 26-23. The Cubs led 25-6 in the fourth inning, but held on as the game ended with the Phillies leaving the bases loaded.

1952 - In a 1-0 win over the Yankees, Virgil Trucks of the Tigers pitches his second no-hitter of the season. The no-hitter is in doubt for three innings when a play made by shortstop Johnny Pesky in the third inning is under debate. Phil Rizzuto's grounder is ruled an error, then a hit, before it is switched back to an error.

1956 - To make room for Enos Slaughter, the Yankees give Phil Rizzuto his unconditional release. Through the instigation of Ballantine Beer, Rizzuto will be in the announcing booth next year, replacing Jim Woods.

1967 - Dean Chance of Minnesota pitched his second no-hitter of the month, defeating the Indians 2-1. Chance pitched an abbreviated five perfect innings against Boston on August 5th.

1983 - The Louisville Redbirds (American Association) become the first minor league team to draw one million fans in a season.

1985 - New York's Dwight Gooden became the youngest to win 20 games with a 9-3 victory over the San Diego Padres. Gooden at 20 years, nine months, and nine days was one month younger that Bob Feller, who won 20 games for Cleveland in 1939.

1986 - Oakland A's third baseman Mark McGwire hits his first major league home run, a 450-foot blast to center field off Walt Terrell, as Oakland beats Detroit 8-4 at Tiger Stadium.

1991 - Doug Dascenzo commits his first career error after 242 games, an National League record, in Cubs' 12-9 loss to the Padres.

1997 - Boston's Nomar Garciaparra singles twice to extend his hitting streak to 27 games, breaking the American League rookie record set by Guy Curtright of the Chicago White Sox in 1943. The Red Sox come back to beat the Mariners 9-8. Garciaparra's streak will extend to thirty games.

Daily Sports Roundup: August 25

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Phillies send their ace to the mound against the Astros, the Mariners battle the Red Sox, and the WNBA gets its playoffs underway.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

On the American League schedule for Wednesday it'll be Kansas City at Detroit, Tampa Bay at the Angels, Oakland at Cleveland, the Yankees at Toronto, Minnesota at Texas, Baltimore at the White Sox, and a doubleheader between the Mariners and Red Sox in Boston. Before Tuesday’s rainout at Fenway Park it was just scheduled to be Felix Hernandez (9-10, 2.51 ERA) vs. Jon Lester (13-8, 3.26 ERA) on Wednesday. Righthander Hernandez beat the Yankees last time out, holding them scoreless on four hits over eight innings of work and striking out 11 batters. Lefthander Lester will be looking to bounce back from an ugly loss to the Blue Jays in which he surrendered nine runs on eight hits over just two innings, walking three.

Meanwhile, the National League on Wednesday offers up Atlanta at Colorado, Cincinnati at San Francisco, St. Louis at Pittsburgh, the Cubs at Washington, Florida at the Mets, the Dodgers at Milwaukee, Arizona at San Diego, and Houston at Philadelphia. The Astros will go with J.A. Happ (3-2, 3.54 ERA) on Wednesday, and the Phillies will counter with Roy Halladay (16-8, 2.16 ERA). Lefthander Happ was beaten by the Marlins in his most recent trip to the mound, allowing three runs on five hits over his six innings of work. Righthander Halladay will be looking to pick up his seventh straight win on Wednesday; Halladay blanked the Nats over seven innings last time out.

Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, the WNBA begins its postseason schedule on Wednesday with the first game of two conference semifinal matchups: Atlanta at Washington, and Los Angeles at Seattle. The Mystics (22-12 SU, 20-13-1 ATS) finished the season on a six-game winning streak to clinch top spot in the Eastern Conference standings; they're listed as 4.5-point home favorites for Wednesday's opener against the fourth-seeded Dream (19-15 SU, 16-17-1 ATS), with the total at 159.5. The Storm (28-6 SU, 18-14-2) cruised to the best record in the league this season and won the Western Conference by 13 games. Seattle is a 9.5-point home favorite over the Sparks (13-21 SU, 11-23 ATS), with that total listed at 150.

Bettors' best friend (BBF): Wednesday's wagering tips

Weather to watch

Twins at Rangers: There is an expected 10 mph wind blowing across the diamond from third toward first.

Royals at Tigers: There is an expected 10 mph wind blowing in from left center field.

Mariners at Red Sox: 80 percent chance of rain with a 12 mph wind blowing in from center field.

Orioles at White Sox: There is an expected 16 mph wind blowing in from left center field.

Houston at Philadelphia: 30 percent chance of rain.

Oakland at Cleveland: 30 percent chance of rain and an expected 10 mph wind blowing in from right field.

Cardinals at Pirates: 30 percent chance of thunderstorms.

Marlins at Mets: 30 percent chance of rain.

Who’s hot

The Reds are 9-2 in their past 11 road games.

The over is 13-5-1 in the Cardinals past 19 games.

The Padres are 13-3 in their past 16 overall.

Who’s not

The Royals are 3-14 in their past 17 road games.

The under is 6-2 in the Astros past eight games.

The under is 17-6-3 in Oakland’s past 26 road games.

Key stat

25: Aggregate margin of victory for the Tigers on their home stand, outscoring opponents 31-6 in four straight wins. It is the largest margin of victory in the first four games of a home stand for Detroit since September of 1968.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

The bullpen situation for the St. Louis Cardinals just got dicey. The Cardinals, in the thick of a division and Wild Card race, just put left-hander Dennys Reyes on the disabled list. Reyes has appeared in 50 games this season and is 2-1 with a 3.94 ERA, however he has a strain in his pitching elbow. The bigger deal is that St. Louis lost left-handed pitchers Renyel Pinto (released) and Nate Robertson (opted-out) recently from Triple-A Memphis and was forced to call up righty Fernando Salas. For a manager in Tony LaRussa that loves pitching matchups, this is a big curve ball.

Game of the Day

Minnesota Twins at Texas Rangers (-145, 8.5)

Notable quotes

"I love Detroit. I feel like we're not out of it yet. At least we can make some kind of run." – Johnny Damon on his decision not to return to the Red Sox this week.

Tips and notes

After a horrendous game between the Jets and Panthers this weekend, most Carolina backers don’t know whether to pine for Matt Moore or Jimmy Clausen at quarterback. Well this quote shouldn’t help: "I still don't feel 100 percent right now," Clausen told CarolinaGrowl.com. "The doctor said it's probably going to be until after the season until I feel 100 percent. I'm going to have to play through some aches and pains until the season is over. That's just the nature of football." Clausen, who may have a chance to take over the Panthers if Moore struggles early, has been hobbled by a toe injury that has nagged him for months.

Tuck this note away for the weekend. Columbus played Santos Laguna in Mexico on Tuesday night, but coach Robert Warzycha left standout All-Star attacking midfielder Guillermo Barros Schelotto and outstanding central defender Chad Marshall at home to rest before a game against FC Dallas on Saturday. The Crew is 9-2 at home this because of shrewd roster moves like this and not only should Columbus have the best two players on the pitch this weekend, they should be as fresh as ever.

As if the New York Yankee rotation needed a little more controversy. Struggling starter Javier Vasquez was shipped to the bullpen on Tuesday with a 9-9 record and 5.05 ERA. Starting in his place? Ivan Nova, who is 0-0 with a 2.16 ERA. On Monday, Nova went 5.1 innings and gave up two earned runs on six hits in a 3-2 loss to the Blue Jays. That start was mediocre enough to earn him another chance to secure a regular spot. "I can't tell you right now," Yankees manager Joe Girardi told ESPN.com when asked if Vazquez would remain in the 'pen. "I want to see where we are after Sunday, and we'll continue to evaluate how everyone's doing and how everyone's feeling."

Wednesday's six-pack

ESPN runs 24 hours of college basketball to celebrate the start of the season on November 16........here are some of the matchups.......

12:00 mid-- Miami @ Memphis

2am-- St John's @ St Mary's

4am-- Central Michigan @ Hawai'i

6am-- Stony Brook @ Monmouth

8am-- Robert Morris @ Kent State

10am-- Northeastern @ Southern Illinois

12 noon-- Oral Roberts @ Tulsa

2pm-- LaSalle @ Baylor

4pm-- Virginia Tech @ Kansas State

5:30pm-- Marist @ Villanova

**************************************************

Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

13) Back when he was coaching, Bill Parcells won a lot of his exhibtion games; now that he's running the Dolphins, they're also winning a lot of exhibition games, winning their last nine. Winning helps, losing doesn't.

12) Temple Owls went 9-4 LY and played in a bowl for first time in 30 years; so how is it that Al Golden is still coaching the Owls? How come no bigger school gobbled him up? Is he waiting for the Penn State job?

11) Apparently Daniel Snyder is very hard to work for; the Washington Redskins have now had seven PR directors this decade.

10) Michigan Wolverines are only a 3-point favorite over UConn is their season opener. In Ann Arbor. Lot of pressure on Wolverines this year, most of it on the head coach, who is 8-16 the last two years.

9) A's/Angels have both won 62 games, but Oakland has allowed 114 less runs than the Halos. Too bad they can't hit very well.

8) Winning is profitable; Rays' fans spent 119% more per person in the magical 2008 season than they did during '07, which was just one more in a long line of dreadful Tampa Bay seasons. People love jumping on a winning bandwagon, and so do the team's accountants.

7) Sales of golf apparel are up 11% this year, but sales of Eldrick Woods' apparel is down 7.5%. People tend to jump off losing bandwagons.

6) Things you don't see too often on the PGA money list........
#82-- Jerry Kelly $891,493
#83-- Eldrick Woods $872,086
#84-- Josh Teater $869,939

Wonder how much Josh Teater shirts are going for at Dick's?

5) USC has only 67 scholarship players this year, and since they're only giving out 15 scholarships a year in the next three recruiting cycles (25 is the normal yearly limit), it is logical to assume that the next 5-6 years will be rough for the Trojans.

4) Apparently, Tennessee Titans' coaches have a clause in their contract that allows them to call for a free taxi cab 24/7 if they've been out on the town drinking. Good idea to be safe, but why is it necessary?

3) When Johnny Damon refused his trade to Boston, he cost the Tigers $1.8M they would have saved by not paying him the rest of the year.

2) Surprised to see that over the last six baseball seasons, the first player to get to 40 home runs has been a different guy every year.

1) Is Rich Brooks the only guy ever to be a head coach in the Pac-10, NFL and SEC? I can't come up with anyone else. Lane Kiffin is going to join him on that list this year. Dennis Green coached in the NFL, Big 11 and Pac-10, Steve Spurrier coached in the NFL-SEC-ACC, but for the Pac-10/SEC/NFL, Brooks/Kiffin is all I have.
