I have never played and really never had any interest in playing before.I still don't have interest in playing but I have a good friend of mine that is wanting me to join with him.I'm a true fan type of guy who loves my team and hates some other teams and players with a "fans"passion.I just never could see myself cheering for one of the players that I don't like(most of the ones I don't like are real good players)especially if they are playing against my team or the playoffs are on the line or something like that, know what I'm saying? But I kind of want to try to play and win the $ and to try it out for a little hobby plus my friend really wants me to play in it with him.I am just not sure ????
Thoughts?

I think you're frowning on fantasy football for the wrong reasons.
The way you talk you are a fan of the game period, not just a fan of your team, so I believe you'll enjoy it more than you think.

How much is it to join the league and is that much money to you?
Look at it as giving you something to shoot for all season not just week by week.

I can tell you this, and others who play fantasy will agree.
You will become a much more knowledgeable sports bettor and it will help your overall capping if you begin to take your league serious...

It's fun. Gives you added incentive to pay attention to more of the games.

If you bet nfl, it can help you to bet less. The folks in my league used to bet the nfl pretty big and now they mainly sweat their fantasy team. To me thats a negative to some its positive.

Overall I say play fantasy foots. If you don't now, you will 100% know every offensive player out there after about 12 weeks in.

It's mostly fun, I suggest giving it a try..you might like it. I am the same way with certain players as if I have a player on a team I don't like, I just try to trade him. If the player is that good you will have takers for him. You can always start out playing for free on like yahoo, cbssports and espn and get a feel for it. Then if you decide you like it, you can start playing for $$$. Most sites have 'live scoring' that updates the score immediately, which is pretty cool. Generally, it's just adds a little more excitement to the season. Most of the people I've introduced to it in the past weren't sure if they'd like it and ended up loving it. The one drawback, from my experience is that some people are ultra competitive, so if you never played before and you come out and win, expect some people to get really pissed off. Not everybody, of course, but it seems like there's at least one or two in every league. It's especially cool if your game is close and you or the other team have a player or two playing in the Monday night game. It could make what may be a boring MNF game a lot of fun.

it's fun....i've been playing with the same group of guys (i think this will be our 5th season) and it's about the only time of year we get in touch.....although you want to make sure you show up at the draft, or at least rank your players ahead of time, it sucks to miss the draft....

I have been playing for over 25 years now. It's fun and you learn about a lot of players that you might not follow. I have 8 teams in 4 different leagues. I have 900 dollars invested in 7 teams and the other team, we play for 50 cents a point. You can make some money in the 50 cent a point league. We have 14 teams and if your stuck over 250 dollars, you can drop out, but very seldom anyone drops out. I have seen some guys stuck over a 1000 dollars. I have played this league for 16 years and have only paid twice. Fantasy football, love it.

I stopped playing fantasy because too often the interests of my fantasy team would influence my betting. If I needed Drew Brees to do well because he was on my time then I would be less likely to bet against the Saints even if I felt that was the right bet.

See what I mean?

It does get you to be a lot more informed about the players though.

Great group of guys in this thread that I respect the opinions of.Thanks for the feed back fellas. If you guys would have been on the opposite side of the fence on this then I probably wouldn't give playing a second thought. But after reading the replies here it seems like I should give it a whirl.I am still thinking it over but I think I am gonna play,I am supposed to let him know tonight.
Thanks again guys and GL.

I think I can handle mixing with my betting. My biggest worries are my "fan emotions".I think I'll give it a try though ,if I end up not being able to handle it then I'll take it as a lesson learned.

Scoops, I hope you like it man. I'll offer some other suggestions, it helps you out a lot if you know or get to know the other players in the league and who their favorite playes/teams are. For example, say you don't like the Bengals at all but you know some others in your league are big Bengals fans. When it's your turn in the draft and guys like TO or Chad Ocho Cinco are available, don't pass them over just because you don't like them (I don't know if you do or not, I'm just saying). Draft them and then trade them to the guys who might overpay for them just because they like them and they weren't able to draft them themselves for whatever reason. Another important thing is make sure
you know what your league's scoring rules are before you go into the draft. When fantasy football first started, most leagues just awarded points for TDs and FGs, now most give points for yds gained, some bonus points for rbs going over 100 yds, QBs passing over 300 yards, etc. And usually as a rule of thumb, most people think RBs are the most important players in fantasy, followed by WRs and then QBs. Don't worry too much about kickers and defenses, especially kickers, take them in later rounds. Hope you like it and GL.

i do fantasy league with friends from college, league is great because it is only way we keep in touch.

as for liking it or recommending it, it's hard to say, especially as a gambler. for one, i would never do a league for free, what's the point. also, fantasy can get annoying, as i hate being somewhere, and some asshole is whining about his qb scoring points or which rb gets a touchdown, when i got a few hundred on the game.

That irritates the shit out of me sometimes too. When I have a ton on the game and some guy gets overly-loud because the QB he's playing against threw a pick or some stupid shit. And his fantasy league was like a $10 entry...
