According to a number of media outlets, including ESPN, MLB Network and SI, the Los Angeles Dodgers will send Manny Ramirez to the Chicago White Sox on Monday as a straight waiver claim, receiving zero compensation for the outfielder.
The White Sox will be responsible for nearly $4M in salary and deferred money due Ramirez, according to SI late Sunday night.
Last year, the Sox claimed Alex Rios and received him in similar fashion. Rios has been better for the Sox this year than he had been in Toronto for the past couple years, but is still a questionable gamble at his salary and production.
This move, however, clearly indicates that the Sox are going for broke with an expiring roster. Paul Konerko, AJ Pierzynski, Juan Pierre, Andruw Jones and Omar Vizquel are just a few of the names that might not be back on the South Side of Chicago next year, so eating a lot of money is a calculated move by Sox GM Kenny Williams to jump-start the struggling Sox.
The Sox opted to not bring back Jim Thome after last year, who signed for $1.5M with Minnesota. They also allowed Jermaine Dye to walk away as a free agent; Dye is still unemployed. However, the DH-by-committee approach has been a failure in Chicago, as Mark Kotsay, Jones and other haven't been able to consistently get on base or generate offense.

Manny Ramirez is finished. He'll be lucky to be in the league in 2011. His bat speed is gone. He can't even remotely get around on pitches that he used to crush. He got old and slow very fast. He could only play in the American league because he can't move a foot to either side of him in the outfield. He's a malingerer and a cancer in any clubhouse that he's in. He'll be in the hall of fame in five years but his career is done.

clubhouse cancer maybe, cant field for sure. cant hit i dont know about that he is batting .311 and hit .290 last year, alot of his deep flyball outs in LA will be HRs in the cell. His bat speed seems just fine to me from what i have seen last week i seen him hit a ball so hard it was 2feet off the ground right next to the ss who had no time to react the ball was hit so hard it split the gap in the outfield. All he has to do is hit, either way its a upgrade for the sox thank god no more kotsay and jones.

White Sox Excited About Addition Of Manny
September 7, 2010 10:34 a.m. EST
John Raffel - AHN Sports Correspondent
Detroit, MI, United States (AHN) - Ozzie Guillen is trying to pull the right strings as the Chicago White Sox manager bids to keep his team in the thick of the American League Central Division race.

He's also elated he now has Manny Ramirez as another weapon in his lineup.
The White Sox defeated the Detroit Tigers 5-4 at Comerica Park Monday to extend their winning streak to seven games. Minnesota also won, keeping the Twins ahead of the White Sox by 3 ½ games for first place in the American League's Central Division.
It was also a game in which White Sox shortstop Omar Vizquel appeared in his 2,832nd game, beating the record for a non-American player in the Major Leagues, formerly held by Rafael Palmiero.
Ramirez, claimed by Chicago off waivers from the Dodgers on Aug. 8, had three hits in five at-bats Monday to raise his average and is 7-of-16 since joining the team.
He also scored a run. He singled in the 10th and was lifted for pinchrunner Alejandro De Aza, who would score the winning run on A.J. Pierzynski's single.
“Manny's on base,” Guillen said. “He's been taking good at-bats. When we get people on base, we keep moving. That's the good thing about it.”
Vizquel has also been impressed with Ramirez.
“Anybody knows what kind of impact Manny can make in any lineup,” Vizquel said. “He's going to make any team a lot better. You have to think about the pitches you make to the guy in front of him and behind him. When he's on the on-deck circle, he's a threat. He's making contact and getting some hits. That's what everyone is expecting of Manny.”
Before coming to Chicago, Ramirez was batting .311 with eight home runs and 40 RBI in 66 games with the Dodgers. He was disabled three times including for a month from July 20 to Aug. 20 with a strained right calf.
But the White Sox are 7-0 since Ramirez's arrival.
“Manny's being in the lineup with (Alex) Rios, (Paul) Konerko and the others, he's a plus,” Guillen said. “He's here at the right time. We're playing well and we pitch well. He contributed a the right time. He's a big contributor for the team and that's what we need him for. We don't need him to carry the ball team. He can't. But we got him to help us win games.”
The nine-time Silver Slugger award winner and a 12-time All-Star ranks 14th all-time with 554 home runs and is only nine behind Reggie Jackson.
Chicago was in Detroit for the first of a four-game series. Chicago entered the game with a Major League best record of 53-27 since June 9. But after a 26-5 run from June 9 to July 15, Chicago has gone 27-22.
In Monday's starting lineup, Guillen didn't include the likes of Konerko, who was hitting .438 in his last 16 games but had left Sunday's game with lower back stiffness. Alex Rios and Alexi Ramirez were other notables not in the starting lineup.
“We're giving them days off,” Guillen said. “Hopefully, they'll come back and finish strong. We want everybody to be ready to go for the rest of the season.”
The White Sox do have a three-game series left with the Twins at Chicago Sept. 14-16.
“We need wins, I don't care about the Twins,” Guillen said. “It's nice when they lose, I expect it to be close when we face them. We've got to continue the way we are.
“We hope we can continue this winning streak as long as we can. We come to Detroit and they have a good ballclub. We're going to face some good pitching. Every day, we have to be prepared.”
Guillen isn't expecting an easy week in Detroit.
“They're very professional and have one of the toughest managers (Jim Leyland) in the game,” he said. “He'll make them play all the way through the season. They're going to try to win as many games as they can.”
Meanwhile, Vizquel said he was happy to set the record for appearances in Major League Baseball for a non-American born player.
“There's a lot of dedication and sacrifice and I'm happy I'm at this place,” he said. “I go week by week and I'll see what happens next year.”
