Cuban defector Aroldis Chapman will be added to the Cincinnati Reds' bullpen for their playoff push.

The Reds plan to call up the hard-throwing lefty from Triple-A Louisville before their game Tuesday night against the Milwaukee Brewers.

The NL Central leaders envision the 22-year-old Chapman as a starter later in his career. They moved him into a reliever's role at Louisville last month July because they had plenty of starters but thought his 103 mph fastball could help them out of the bullpen in Cincinnati.

Chapman signed a six-year, $30.25 million deal in January. He had mixed results as a starter in Louisville, going 5-5 with a 5.11 ERA in 13 games. He is 4-1 with a 2.40 ERA in 26 relief appearances, striking out 49 in 30 innings.

4/27/2011:

Chapman (2-0) got out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth using 101 mph fastballs and pitched around a two-out single in the ninth. Francisco Cordero(notes) pitched a perfect 10th for his fourth save in as many chances.

“I’m real glad that I’m here, that I get to see it, I get to enjoy it. I get to see Chapman warming up,” Cordero said. “He’s a special boy. And you see it, there’s nobody in the history of the big leagues that throws that hard. That really is amazing.”
