Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

Roy Oswalt (9-13, 3.12 ERA) Philadelphia

Oswalt has been everything the Philadelphia Phillies hoped he would be when they swung a deal with the Houston Astros to land the veteran right-hander last month. He is 3-1 over six starts with his new club, allowing only 10 earned runs over that stretch.

He went eight innings allowing a single run in taking a no-decision against the San Diego Padres the last time he took the hill. Oswalt has also struck out at least five batters in five of his six starts with the Phillies.

Slumping

A.J. Burnett (9-12, 5.17 ERA) New York Yankees

Burnett has always been a hard guy to figure out. Some days he takes the mound and is untouchable and others he looks like he should be playing Double-A ball – at best. Right now it’s more the latter than the former.

Burnett is 0-4 in his last five starts and is coming off one of his worst outings of the season. He allowed eight earned runs over 3 1/3 innings in a 9-4 loss at the Chicago White Sox.

"It's Groundhog Day again," Burnett told reporters recently. "When you take your team out of it in the first two or three innings, it wears on these guys. It's got to be frustrating not knowing what you're going to get every five days."

Tim Lincecum (11-9, 3.80 ERA) San Francisco

The San Francisco Giants can forget about the postseason unless Tim Lincecum snaps out of it in a hurry. The club’s ace lost all six of his starts in August, allowing at least four runs in all but one of those appearances to end off the month with a fat 7.82 ERA.

"I'm pretty ready for (September)," Lincecum told reporters. "This has been one of those things you have to take with a punch and just roll with it. It's not fun to go through. You have to fight through it. The last thing I want to do is give up or give in to what's going on now."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September's best and worst pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Like our waistlines after a finger-licking Labor Day barbecue, MLB rosters have expanded to accommodate the final month of the season.

And as college football and the NFL barge onto the scene, MLB pitchers take the final spotlight in hopes of leading their teams on to the playoff trail. Which ones can we count on and which ones figure to belly up? Check it out.

Listed below are hurlers that have enjoyed a two-to-one or better success ratio in team starts the last three seasons during the month of September. On the flip side, we’ve also listed pitchers that struggle in September team starts, winning 33 percent or less of their efforts.

To qualify pitchers must have made a minimum of 10 starts, with at least one start each September over the last three years.

September’s best pitchers

Joe Blanton, 10-5

It’s not so much that Blanton is incredibly effective in the last month of the season. Instead, it is more of a function of the right hander keeping his team in the game, especially with Philadelphia finding a way to win in the late innings. To his credit Blanton has lowered ERA 1.25 in last 10 starts.

Kevin Correia, 8-3

The San Diego hurler has been among the better pitchers in the National League since the All-Star break. Mostly a journeyman in his career, when his pitching coach or the catcher see his slumping shoulders they get on him to stand taller, which increases his velocity and movement on his pitches, making Correia more effective.

Zack Greinke, 10-5

He’s not as dominate this season, lacking the late movement on fastball which led to more strikeouts. Last year’s AL Cy Young winner could still create havoc, with Kansas City having 14 games against playoff contenders this month, putting Greinke and Royals to be in spoiler role.

Josh Johnson, 7-3

The 6-foot-7 righty is closing in on career high in innings pitched and still could tie or better previous season win total (15) and exceed high marks in ERA and WHIP with a typical strong finish.

Jair Jurrjens, 10-3

This sturdily built right hander has been pitching better month by month since coming off the DL in late June. If he throws like usual this September, Atlanta could hold off Philadelphia and win the division.

Jon Lester, 12-3

The talented left hander has been a big-game pitcher late in the season and in the playoffs and is one of the best home-field hurlers in baseball and will look to extend his dominance yet again.

Ted Lilly, 11-5

This is Lilly’s sixth stop in his career and he is making a case for hanging around L.A. with how well he’s pitched in Dodgers uniform. He’s on pace to have career lows in batting average allowed and WHIP, with the former occurring in 2002, ironically the last time he was traded in-season.

Vicente Padilla, 9-3

Most baseball fans and sports bettors, for that matter, wouldn’t list Padilla as a clutch pitcher. Yet, late in the season, this Nicaraguan continues to come up big.

Wandy Rodriguez, 8-4

For a solid portion of last year, Rodriquez was arguably the best LH chucker in the National League. After a very slow start to 2010, Rodriguez has scouts talking again about his command and is averaging over a strikeout per inning in his past 10 starts. Houston might be going nowhere, but Wandy’s stock is rising again.

C.C. Sabathia, 14-2

Try this: Google “late season clutch MLB pitchers” and guaranteed Sabathia’s name will be at the top of the first page. Off being the first pitcher in 41 years to win five or more games in August three years in a row, the left hander wants the ball in the big games and is on track for best year of a very solid career.

Joe Saunders, 10-5

We’re not certain if this lefty will be able to match previous numbers pitching for Arizona, but has a bulldog mentality in the clutch.

September’s worst pitchers

Matt Cain, 5-10

San Francisco is losing ground to San Diego and in the wildcard chase and can’t afford another mediocre month from Cain when it matters most.

Zach Duke, 3-8

He’s a near fixture on this list month after month. If Duke were right handed, he would be in the minor leagues since opposing teams have hit over .300 against him in his career.

Matt Garza, 5-10

It’s strictly a matter of maintaining focus and not letting emotions overcome him. Garza has the ability to be a big winner. Fastball command will leave him, forcing Garza to steer pitches to correct accuracy while his heater straightens out, making him more hittable.

Tim Lincecum, 4-9

It’s not like the two-time Cy Young winner is having a season like Tiger Woods, but with slight build and losing MPH on fastball this year, Lincecum is not noted finisher late in the year. There are questions abound about his long term future.

Paul Maholm, 3-7

Maholm is another Pirates’ lefty that would be lucky to break glass with his fastball. What makes Maholm better than Duke is his plus changeup that he can work in or out on right-hand hitters. Nevertheless, he has to be near perfect most of the time and pitching for Pittsburgh further narrows that margin of error.

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Philadelphia at Los Angeles Dodgers (-110, 6.5)

Two of the hottest pitchers in the bigs square off Wednesday and oddsmakers have reacted with a 6.5-run total. Lefty Clayton Kershaw goes for the Dodgers against Philadelphia’s Roy Oswalt.

Los Angeles has won two of Kershaw’s last three outings with the young lefty sporting a 1.80 ERA over that span. Kershaw took the no-decision the last time he took the hill, giving up a solo home run over six innings pitched while striking out six.

Meanwhile, the Phillies have won five of Roy Oswalt’s six starts since he came over from the Houston Astros. The veteran right-hander has allowed just one run over his last 15 innings pitched and has 155 strikeouts and only 43 walks this year.

The starters look ready to go, but both of these offenses can erupt quickly. We’re expecting at least a few crooked numbers on the board.

Pick: Over

Colorado at San Francisco (-120, 6.5)

September couldn’t come soon enough for San Francisco starter Tim Lincecum. The two-time NL Cy Young winner lost all six of his starts last month, sporting a 7.82 ERA. He has allowed at least four earned runs in each of his last four starts.

Colorado had won six of its last seven heading into Tuesday’s action and will have their ace Ubaldo Jimenez on the mound against the Giants. Jimenez hasn’t won in four starts, but didn’t allow more than three runs in any of those outings either. The 6-foot-4 right-hander has already beaten San Francisco twice this year.

Pick: Rockies

This Day in Baseball
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On September 1 in Baseball History...

1902 - Tinker, Evers, and Chance appear together in the Chicago Cubs lineup for the first time, but not in the positions that will earn them immortality. Johnny Evers, a New York State League rookie, starts at shortstop, with Joe Tinker at third base, Frank Chance at first base, and Bobby Lowe at second base.

1906 - The Philadelphia Athletics beat the Boston Red Sox 4-1 in twenty-four innings. Jack Coombs of the Athletics and Joe Harris of the Red Sox pitched all twenty-four innings. Coombs fanned eighteen.

1912 - Smokey Joe Wood of the Boston Red Sox, on his way to a thirty-four win season, beat Washington's Walter Johnson 1-0 in a specially arranged pitching duel at Boston. The victory was Wood's sixteenth consecutive.

1918 - Ty Cobb pitches two innings against the Browns while the Browns' George Sisler pitches one scoreless inning. The Browns win 6-2 as Sisler hits a double off Cobb.

1931 - Lou Gehrig hits his third grand slam in four days. It is the sixth consecutive game in which the Yankees slugger has homered and it helps New York beat the Red Sox.

1954 - Redlegs slugger Ted Kluszewski hits two home runs to break his own club mark of forty homers in a 9-3 loss to Philadelphia. He will wind up with forty-nine for the season.

1958 - Vinegar Bend Mizell of the St. Louis Cardinals set a National League record by walking nine batters and pitching a shutout. Mizell beat Cincinnati 1-0.

1963 - Curt Simmons of the St. Louis Cardinals allowed six hits, drove in two runs with a triple and stole home plate in a 7-3 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. Simmons' steal of home is the last by a pitcher.

1964 - Southpaw relief pitcher Masanori Murakami becomes the first Major League player from Japan. He debuts in a 4-1 San Francisco loss at New York. His first eleven innings will be scoreless ones.

1975 - Tom Seaver struck out Manny Sanguillen in the seventh inning to become the first to strike out at least two-hundred batters in eight consecutive seasons. Seaver recorded 10 strikeouts in the Mets' 3-0 triumph over Pittsburgh.

1987 - Williamsport (Eastern League) Bills catcher Dave Bresnahan introduces a new wrinkle to baseball, the hidden potato. With a Reading runner, Rick Rudblad, on third base, Bresnahan returns from a time out with a shaved potato hidden in his mitt. On the next pitch he throws the potato wildly on a pickoff attempt. When the runner trots home, Bresnahan tags him out with the real ball. The umpire, unamused, rules the runner safe, gives the catcher an error, and fines him $50. He is released the following day. But that night, their last game of the season, the Bills admit any fan for $1 and a potato. On each potato, Bresnahan autographs, "This spud's for you."

1989 - Eight days after banning Pete Rose from baseball for life, Commissioner Bart Giamatti dies suddenly of a heart attack at the age of 51.

1995 - Tigers manager Sparky Anderson manages his four-thousandth Major League game, but the Indians are 14-4 winners.

1998 - Mark McGwire broke Hack Wilson's sixty-eight year-old National League record for home runs in a season, hitting his 56th and 57th in the St. Louis Cardinals' victory over the Florida Marlins.

Tips and Trends

St. Louis Cardinals at Houston Astros [2:05 PM ET]

CARDINALS: (-110, O/U 8.5) St. Louis has really struggled of late, as they now find themselves 6 games back of the Reds in the National League Central playoff chase. The Cardinals have lost so much of late, that they are shaving their heads to change their luck. St. Louis is 69-60 SU this year, including 28-37 SU on the road this year. The Cardinals are -16.66 and -9.34 units both SU and on the RL overall this year. Veteran pitcher Jeff Suppan will take the mound this afternoon, as he is 1-6 with an ERA of 5.72 and a WHIP of 1.81 this season. The Cardinals are 1-6 in their last 7 road games against a team with a losing record. St. Louis is 2-6 in their last 8 games against a right-handed starter. The Cardinals are 11-5 in Suppan's last 16 Wednesday starts. St. Louis is 13-6 in Suppan's last 19 starts during game 3 of a series. New York Mets at Atlanta Braves [ESPN | 7:10 PM ET]

METS: It's been a very disappointing season for the Mets, as they are simply trying to finish the year with a winning record now. New York is 65-66 SU this year, including 26-41 SU away from home. New York has just been too inconsistent this year, both with their offense and their pitching staff. Turmoil has followed this team as well, which certainly hasn't helped the team in the standings. The Mets are -3.88 and +17.86 units both SU and on the RL this year. Pitcher Michael Pelfrey will make the start tonight, as he is 13-7 with an ERA of 3.61 and a WHIP of 1.43 this season. The Mets are 5-14 in their last 19 road games against a right-handed starter. New York is 1-5 in their last 6 games against the National League East. The Mets are 12-3 in Pelfrey's last 15 starts following a Quality Start in his last appearance. The Mets are 1-4 in Pelfrey's last 5 road starts against a team with a winning record. New York is 1-5 in Pelfrey's last 6 starts with 4 days of rest.

Mets are 8-17 last 25 road games overall.
Under is 11-5 in Mets last 16 games against a right-handed starter.

Key Injuries - SS Jose Reyes (oblique) is questionable.

Projected Score: 4

BRAVES: (-170, O/U 7.5) Atlanta has won their past 3 games, and with San Diego struggling of late, the Braves are closing in on the best record in the National League. The Braves are 76-55 SU this year, including a very impressive 47-18 SU at home. No team in baseball comes close to matching the home record of Atlanta this season. Atlanta is +9.21 and +14.31 units both SU and on the RL this year. Pitcher Tommy Hanson will take the mound tonight, as he is 8-10 with an ERA of 3.76 and a WHIP of 1.27 this season. The Braves are 6-2 in their last 8 games against the National League East. Atlanta is 6-2 in their last 8 games during game 3 of a series. The Braves are 36-16 in their last 52 home games against a right-handed starter. The Braves are 1-4 in their last 5 games against a starter with a WHIP greater than 1.30. Atlanta is 2-7 in Hanson's last 9 starts on grass. The Braves are 1-4 in Hanson's last 5 home starts.

Daily Sports Roundup: September 1

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Yankees play host to the Athletics, the Rockies look for a win in San Francisco, and the Fever and Liberty finish off their playoff series.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

On the American League schedule for Wednesday it'll be the White Sox at Cleveland, Boston at Baltimore, Toronto at Tampa Bay, Detroit at Minnesota, Texas at Kansas City, the Angels at Seattle, and Oakland at the Yankees. Brett Anderson (3-5, 3.32 ERA) will take the hill for the A's on Wednesday, while the Yankees counter with A.J. Burnett (9-12, 5.17 ERA). Lefthander Anderson will be looking to bounce back from an ugly outing against the Rangers in which he picked up the loss after giving up four runs on six hits in just two innings of work. Righthander Burnett, though, was even worse last time out, surrendering nine runs (eight earned) in just 3 1-3 innings against the ChiSox.

Over in the National League on Wednesday it's then St. Louis at Houston, Pittsburgh at the Cubs, Philadelphia at the Dodgers, San Diego at Arizona, the Mets at Atlanta, Milwaukee at Cincinnati, Washington at Florida, and Colorado at San Francisco. Ubaldo Jimenez (17-5, 2.71 ERA) will take on Tim Lincecum (11-9, 3.80 ERA) in that last matchup. Righthander Jimenez has lost two straight outings against the Dodgers and Diamondbacks despite giving up just six runs on 12 hits over those 13 innings of work. Jimenez beat the Giants on August 4 (one run over seven innings). Righthander Lincecum has lost five straight starts, going the entire month of August without a victory.

Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, there's one game on the WNBA playoff schedule for Wednesday, with Indiana at New York in the third and deciding game of their first-round playoff series. The Fever forced Game 3 with a 75-67 home win over New York in Game 2, with Tamika Catchings scoring a team-high 17 points for Indiana in that contest. Tammy Sutton-Brown added 14 points for the Fever, and Cappie Pondexter poured in 24 for New York.

Wednesday's six-pack

-- Cliff Lee has allowed 30 runs in his last 29.1 innings. Not good.

-- Rangers picked up Alex Cora, Jeff Francoeur Tuesday, so at least two Mets will make the playoffs this season.

-- Cincinnati now leads the Cardinals by a shocking seven games.

-- Orioles' 17 wins in August are their most in any month since they won 18 games in September six years ago.

-- BYU is bolting Mountain West for WCC in basketball; they'll be an independent in football. Did you know BYU can't play on Sundays? That means the format for the WCC tourney will change in 2012.

-- Casper Wells, a local kid from Schenectady, went 3-3 for Detroit, is now hitting .375 in his first season in the major leagues.

*************************************************

Wednesday's List of 13: Things I'm looking for in September.......

13) There's a guy playing AAA baseball in Albuquerque named Lindsey who is 33 years old; he's played 16 years in minors with a career batting average of .311, but he's never made the big leagues. If the baseball gods have an ounce of compassion, Lindsey will get the call this week; as it turns out, he's having his best season (.363, 23 HRs, 90 RBI).

12) I'm hoping that by the end of September, I'll be really good at using my new cellphone. Seems like it can do a lot of things.

11) Which I-AA college football team will upset a I-A team this fall?

10) If Eldrick Woods had an ounce of humor in his veins, he'd show up at the first tee of a pro-am with Jenna Jameson as his caddy, everyone could have a good chuckle (OK, almost everyone) and then he could go on with his business of trying to win his first tournament of 2010. Can't hurt to break some tension, can it?

9) Will the Saints have a post-championship hangover? They waited so long to win a title, they celebrated harder than any champ ever has.

8) Want to see an exhibtion hockey game; looking at the schedules, looks like October 1st in Glens Falls is my night. There's an NHL game out in Las Vegas, but its after I come home, so Glens Falls it will be. Hockey in person is bigtime fun; if you haven't done it, treat yourself.

7) I'm looking to see if the sandwiches at the Carnegie Deli in the Mirage are as big and as delicious as they were last year; I'm guessing they are.

6) Looking to see if Jake Locker can get Washington to a bowl game; I'm a big Locker fan, but this is the year he needs to get UDub to a bowl.

5) I'm curious to see if Erin Andrews is any good hosting Game Day on Saturday mornings; part of her new contract is that she gets to host an hour early in the show. For all the time she's been on TV, no idea if she is any good as a broadcaster.

4) I'm looking to see if Lane Kiffin can coach; guy gets lot of good jobs, but what has he done to deserve them? USC only has 67 scholarship players this year (limit is 85) so this will challenge him as a coach.

3) Can Terry Francona get his banged-up Red Sox into the playoffs? If so, its one of the great managing jobs in recent years.

2) I'm looking to see if my A's can finish 2010 with a winning record; in the current baseball landscape, its a good annual goal for them.

1) I've never gone through a football season without drinking lot of soda, so this will be the first time for that. Will the Rams drive me to drink?
