Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

Clay Buchholz (15-5, 2.21 ERA) Boston Red Sox

The Sox didn’t win the last time Buchholz toed the rubber but you can’t blame the young righty for that. He gave up just one earned run in 7 1/3 innings against the Tampa Bay Rays. He’s allowed three or fewer runs in seven straight starts.

The under is 3-0 in his last three outings while the Sox are 8-2 in his last 10 appearances. Even better, he wasn’t listed higher than a -153 favorite in any of those games.

Matt Garza (13-5, 3.53 ERA) Tampa Bay Rays

Garza is 2-0 with a 0.83 ERA over his last three starts and his best outing may have been his last when he held the Red Sox to one run but got a no-decision.

The right-hander has lasted seven innings or more and thrown at least 100 pitches in each of his last three starts with 16 strikeouts to six walks during that stretch.

Garza has enjoyed success at Baltimore, going 5-0 lifetime at Camden Yards.

Slumping

Barry Zito (8-10, 4.17) San Francisco Giants

Zito would have been the first man in the shower in his last two starts except for the fact that he barely broke a sweat. He has lasted a career-low 3 2/3 innings during both starts and allowed 12 earned runs in those brief appearances.

Zito hasn't won a game since July 16, going 0-7 in his last eight starts plus one relief appearance. The lefty could be headed for the bullpen if he doesn't turn it around soon. He is 25-14 with a 3.72 ERA in the month of September.

Fausto Carmona (11-13, 4.19 ERA) Cleveland Indians

It's been over a month now since Carmona last tasted victory, dropping five consecutive starts and allowing 43 hits and 21 earned runs during that 31 1/3-inning span.

The Tribe has provided a total of only 13 runs in support in those five games, but Carmona hasn't exactly been putting himself in position to get a win either.

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toronto Blue Jays at New York Yankees (-150, 9)

The Blue Jays are shutting down Brandon Morrow after tonight's start. It's a shame because the 26-year-old left-hander was just beginning to show how good he can be.

Morrow already has pitched more than double the number of innings he did in his first three seasons in the league so the Jays wisely don't want to risk unnecessary strain on his arm.

"I understand what they’re trying to do," Morrow said after getting the news Sunday, one day after beating the Tigers for his 10th win. "They had the club’s and my best interest in mind. I’m not going to argue."

Morrow has not taken a loss since June 29, going 5-0 in his last eight starts. The Jays are 7-1 in their last eight starts, including a game played last week in Toronto when he outdueled Yankees rookie Ivan Nova.

Nova picked up his first career win against the White Sox in his last start, but he also committed a rookie mistake against the Jays when he threw high and inside to Toronto's Jose Bautista.

The Jays will be looking to get even, Morrow will be looking to go out on a high note and bettors can look for some value.

Pick: Blue Jays

Los Angeles Angels at Oakland Athletics (-180, 7.5)

Speaking of value, the best money-making opportunity of the day may be the Halos, who have won 12 of their last 17 games in Oakland and had a day off Thursday.

The A's could have used the break after a brutal 10-game road swing that sent them cross-country to Cleveland, halfway back to Texas and then all the way to New York. They flew home after yesterday's series sweep by the Yankees.

The A's were on a roll midway through the trip thanks to their starting pitching's streak of 18 quality (and quantity) starts, but that unit appeared to fatigue from overuse in New York. Dallas Braden's early exit from Thursday's game is a prime example.

Oakland's Gio Gonzales has been hot recently and L.A.'s Scott Kazmir has not, but the Halos lefty has enjoyed success against the A's. After getting hammered in his last meeting against the A's he is 9-4 for his career against the AL West rivals.

The A's are batting just .239 against lefties in their last 10 starts and the Conor Jackson, Eric Chavez and Adam Rosalas remain on the DL. The rest of their roster is on the FL (fatigued list).

Pick: Angels

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tips and Trends
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago White Sox at Boston Red Sox [7:10 PM ET]

WHITE SOX: Chicago has won their past 3 games, and optimism is high with the addition of offensive powerhouse Manny Ramirez. The current 3 game winning streak has Chicago within 4 games of the Twins in the American League Central. The White Sox only chance at making the postseason is by winning the AL Central. The White Sox are +9.27 and +10.15 units both SU and on the RL this year. Chicago is also serviceable on the road, where they are 35-33 SU this season. The White Sox have split the 8 games they've played against the Red Sox this season. Pitcher John Danks will make the road start tonight, as he is 12-9 with an ERA of 3.65 and a WHIP of 1.18 this year. The White Sox are 9-2 in their last 11 Friday games. The White Sox are 4-1 in their last 5 road games against a right-handed starter. Chicago is 7-2 in their last 9 games following an off day. The White Sox are 4-9 in their last 13 games as a road underdog. The White Sox are 2-5 in Danks' last 7 starts as an underdog. Chicago is 2-11 in Danks' last 13 Friday starts overall. The White Sox are 0-4 in Danks' last 4 starts against the American League East.

White Sox are 18-5 last 23 games during game 1 of a series.
Over is 7-0 last 7 games as an underdog.

Key Injuries - 2B Gordon Beckham (wrist) is questionable.

Projected Score: 2

RED SOX: (-150, O/U 8) Boston is fighting a daunting battle, as they try to gain enough ground in the AL East to make the postseason. The battle comes from having to chase both the Yankees and the Rays, the 2 best teams in baseball. Despite being 75-58 SU this year, the Red Sox trail the playoff hunt by 7 games. Boston is +1.14 and -1.03 units both SU and on the RL respectively this year. Pitcher Clay Buchholz will make the home start tonight, as he is 15-5 with an ERA of 2.21 and a WHIP of 1.18 this season. The Red Sox are 5-1 in their last 6 games as a favorite. Boston is 5-0 in Buchholz's last 5 home starts against a team with a winning record. The Red Sox are 8-0 in Buchholz's last 8 starts as a home favorite. Boston is 8-1 in Buchholz's last 9 starts against the American League Central. The Red Sox are 14-3 in Buchholz's last 17 starts during game 1 of a series. Boston is 21-5 in Buchholz's last 26 starts following a Quality Start in his last appearance.

Red Sox are 38-15 last 53 games as a home favorite.
Over is 8-3 last 11 home games following a road trip of 7 or more days.

Key Injuries - C Jason Varitek (foot) is out.

Projected Score: 4 (UNDER-Total of the Day)

Daily Sports Roundup: September 3

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The BoSox play host to the ChiSox, the Giants meet the Dodgers, and the PGA's playoffs resume at the Deutsche Bank Championship.

Colliding on the gridiron . . .

There are two games on the college football schedule for Friday, with Villanova at Temple, and Arizona at Toledo. The contest between 'Nova and Temple didn't receive a line from the oddsmakers, and Arizona is a 15.5-point road favorite against the Rockets.

As well, there's one Canadian Football League game on tap for Friday, with B.C. at Montreal. The Lions (1-7 SU, 2-6 ATS) have now lost seven games in a row, while the Alouettes (6-2 SU, 4-4 ATS) will be playing without injured starting quarterback Anthony Calvillo. Montreal is pegged as the 11-point favorite for Friday, with the total set at 49.5.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League schedule for Friday offers up Toronto at the Yankees, Tampa Bay at Baltimore, Texas at Minnesota, Detroit at Kansas City, the Angels at Oakland, Cleveland at Seattle, and the White Sox at Boston. John Danks (12-9, 3.65 ERA) is set to take on Clay Buchholz (15-5, 2.21 ERA) in that last matchup. Lefthander Danks was knocked around by the Yankees in his last trip to the mound, giving up eight runs on six hits over his 4 1-3 innings of work. Righthander Buchholz had to settle for a no-decision against the Rays last time out, giving up two runs (one earned) over his 7 1-3 innings.

Meanwhile, the National League schedule for Friday has Washington at Pittsburgh, the Mets at the Cubs, Milwaukee at Philadelphia, Atlanta at Florida, Cincinnati at St. Louis, Houston at Arizona, Colorado at San Diego, and San Francisco at the Dodgers. The Giants will go with Barry Zito (8-10, 4.07 ERA) on Friday, while Los Angeles counters with Chad Billingsley (10-8, 3.73 ERA). Lefthander Zito will be looking to bounce back from an ugly loss to the Diamondbacks in which he gave up nine runs (seven earned) over his 3 2-3 innings pitched. Righthander Billingsley is also coming off a losing outing, surrendering three runs on five hits in six innings of work against the Rockies last game.

Rounding out the Roundup . . .

The PGA Tour continues its FedExCup playoffs starting Friday with the Deutsche Bank Championship at TPC Boston. Tiger Woods played well enough at The Barclays last week to qualify for the second round of the playoffs, and the oddsmakers have him as the 7/1 favorite to pick up the win at TPC Boston. Steve Stricker, the defending tournament champion, is next at 11/1 odds, followed by each of Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, and Rory McIlroy at 16/1. Mickelson won this event back in 2007, and Woods was the winner in 2006. Two-time champion Vijay Singh (2008 and 2004) is back at 100/1 odds to win this weekend; Singh is back in 86th place in the FedExCup standings. Matt Kuchar, who leads the standings right now, sits at 22/1 odds to pick up the victory.

Friday's six-pack

-- Florida Atlantic won 32-31 at UAB; Howard Schnellenberger is just an ageless coach. He's building a good program at FAU. Owls trailed in first quarter 14-0-- this is a terrific win for them.

-- If you add up the ages of Hawai'i's two coordinators, they'd still be six years younger than USC's DC Monte Kiffin, who is 70.

-- Rutgers beat Norfolk State 31-0, but it was only 6-0 at the half.

-- Minnesota won 24-17 at Middle Tennessee; Gophers would have been in deep trouble if MTSU QB Dasher hadn't been suspended.

-- Utah survived shaky clock management, beat Pitt 27-24 in OT; this is why teams play cupcakes in openers. Starting a season 0-1 sucks.

-- Phillies scored nine runs in 7th inning, won pivotal makeup game in Denver 12-11, a damaging loss for the Rockies, who led 7-3.

*****************************************

Friday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

13) Too many college football teams open the season with a glorified scrimmage against an inferior opponent, or as Al McGuire used to call them, "cupcakes". Stony Brook-Norfolk State-Elon-South Dakota, none of these teams have a rat's chance of winning, but they'll take home a big paycheck for losing gracefully. To me, it cheapens the sport.

12) Put it this way; Ohio State played Marshall, Texas is playing Rice; no way are they losing those games, but at least they're playing against a D-I opponent. Florida State playing Samford is ridiculous.

11) Big 11 split up Ohio State-Michigan into different divisions, but the two rivals will still meet every year. Michigan State lucked out as they doled out "annual rivalries". Spartans will play feeble Indiana annually.

10) San Jose State's first two games are at Alabama, at Wisconsin; their coaches are going to have to soothe a lot of bruised egos after they get crushed twice, but the school's accountants will be dancing with joy as two fat paychecks roll into their athletic department's bank account.

9) East Carolina is 20-7-1 vs spread in its last 28 games as an underdog, so we know Skip Holtz can coach. Look for South Florida to become a giant in the Big East. They came close under program founder Leavitt, the Bulls had been finishing seasons poorly the last few years.

8) USC has kicking issues; they went for two after their first three TDs Thursday night. How can a school the size of USC not have some kid on campus who played soccer in high school? This will cost them a win.

7) FedEx is the #1 business in the Memphis area; guy named Fred Smith is the CEO of FedEx. Fred has a son named Cannon who originally went to Miami, playing one game for the 'canes, but now goes to Memphis. Kid named Cannon has to be a quarterback, right?

6) How would you like to be Larry Porter, the new head football coach at Memphis? Is there any doubt who the starting QB is for the Tigers? You got it, the Miami transfer, son of the FedEx CEO, Cannon Smith.

5) It should be illegal to say the words "Heisman watch" before regular season is over in baseball.

4) Kellen Clemens apparently took a pay cut to stay with the Jets; he's the 3rd string QB for Gang Green. He's started nine games in four years.

3) Sam Bradford was 6-6 for 68 yards against Baltimore's second string defense, but lets be honest here, the kid lit it up this summer. It would be very shocking if Sam the Ram doesn't start the opener vs Arizona. The NFC West is weak; my Rams have as good a shot as anyone!!!!

2) Brooklyn Cyclones are 49-23 in NY-Penn League, six games better than anyone else in league; their manager is Wally Backman, who needs to be the next manager of the Mets. He wins, he's feisty, he's a Met. His presence on the bench would invigorate a depressed fanbase.

1) I love football season starting, because business really picks up here at the website for the next seven months, but this has been the warmest and best summer ever here in upstate New York. I'll be sad to see it go.

Bettors' best friend: Friday's wagering tips

Lines off the board

Villanove at Temple: Total is off the board with Hurricane Earl expected to bring heavy winds and rain.

Lines to keep an eye on

Braves at Marlins: Total opened at 9 but has risen to 9.5.

Arizona at Toledo: Arizona opened as a 12.5 favorite but are now listed at -16 at most books. Total has climbed from 58.5 to 60.5.

Weather to watch

Hurricane Earl has taken a more easterly track, likely sparing the mid-Atlantic from heavy winds and rains, and also has increased in speed, meaning it should blow through the New England area late Friday night instead of Saturday morning. That's good news for college games such as Weber State at Boston College, but could effect baseball games in New York and Boston.

Blue Jays at Yankees: 20 percent chance of rain.

Mets at Cubs: Winds forecast to blow out to right/center field at 21 mph.

Nationals at Pirates: 40 percent chance of thunderstorms.

Braves at Marlins: 30 percent chance of thunderstorms.

White Sox at Red Sox: 70 percent chance of showers. Winds blowing out to left/center at 16 mph.

Who's hot

Astros are 9-2 in their last 11 (but 1-7 in last eight vs. Diamondbacks)

Reds are 6-1 in their last seven.

Nationals have won five in a row over Nationals.

Phillies and Twins are 5-1 in their last six.

Braves have won five in a row.

Who's not

Cardinals are 1-8 in their last nine.

Orioles are 1-8 in Kevin Millwoods's last nine starts.

Padres have lost seven in a row.

Pirates are 1-5 in their last six.

White Sox are 2-8 in last 10 in Boston.

Key stat

6-20 - The Tampa Bay Rays' record this season in Friday games. The Rays are 31 games above .500 overall and 76-31 in games not played on Fridays.

Injury that shouldn't be overlooked

New York Yankees outfielder Nick Swisher exited Thursday's game against Oakland with left knee stiffness and is questonable for today's series opener against the Toronto Blue Jays. Swisher grounded out in his first at-bat in the first inning, but did not come out to play the field in the top of the second. Curtis Granderson replaced Swisher, who is scheduled to undergo tests on the injury, and may do the same today. Swisher is batting .295 with 25 home runs and 80 RBIs.

Game of the day

Texas Rangers at Minnesota Twins (-130, 9.5)

Notable quotable

"Going to bars - treating women like that; oh my God. I pray they don't cut [his NFL suspension] to four games. I hope they leave it at six. There is no excuse for that. The egos get out of hand."

Former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback and Terry Bradshaw told the Shreveport (La.) Times about current Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger's request to reduce his six-game suspension.

Tips and notes

The Atlanta Braves have been forced to juggle their rotation. Veteran right-hander Derek Lowe will miss tonight's scheduled start due to lingering pain near his right elbow. Former fifth starter Kenshin Kawakami, who was recalled on Tuesday, will make the spot start against the Florida Marlins. The move may be permanent if there's no improvement by Lowe, who has posted an 11-12 mark with a 4.53 ERA. The Braves are 0-8 in Kawakami's last eight road starts.

The New York Yankees have a logjam among their starting rotation now that Javier Vazquez and Andy Pettitte are coming back. Vazquez will pitch Saturday against the Blue Jays. He went 2-2 with a 6.69 ERA in his first seven starts after the All-Star break, prompting manager Joe Girardi to yank him from the rotation for rookie Ivan Nova. Vazquez will replace Dustin Moseley, who returns to long relief, and Nova will remain in the rotation, at least until Pettitte returns. Taking pressure of Girardi and the starting staff is the fact that the Yankees' lineup has provided 21 home runs in their last nine games.

North Carolina coach Butch Davis has suspended senior defensive tackle Marvin Austin indefinitely for an unspecified violation of team rules and as many as 16 fellow Tar Heels also may face similar punishments before Saturday's game against LSU. Davis said the disciplinary action against Austin is not related to the ongoing NCAA investigation into whether the standout tackle and another player received improper benefits from an agent. Austin had 42 tackles and four sacks as a junior. Keep one eye on the disciplinary report and another on the line. The Tigers are currently 6.5-point favorites.
