Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

Carlos Zambrano (7-6, 4.23 ERA) Chicago Cubs

Maybe all the Cubs' pitchers should go through anger management counseling. It certainly has worked for the formerly hot-headed Zambrano.

Z is 4-0 with a 1.98 ERA since returning to the Cubs' rotation and he has won three straight starts for the first time in more than a year.

The hard-throwing righty has 23 strikeouts to only seven walks over his last three outings.

J.A. Happ (6-2, 2.86 ERA) Houston Astros

Happ has found a happy home at Houston, where he is 3-0 at home and 3-0 in his last three starts overall after being traded to the Astros from the Phillies.

Happ had a complete-game sutout against the Cardinals last week to improve to 4-0 with a blistering 0.84 ERA at Minute Maid Park this season.

Slumping

Roy Halladay (17-10, 2.36 ERA) Philadelphia Phillies

Halladay hasn't been his same dominant self over his last three starts, going 1-2 with a 4.29 ERA over that span.

Those numbers might not land most pitchers on the slumping list but you have to grade Halladay on a curve. He's allowed 23 hits, 10 earned runs and seven homers during those 21 innings. In his previous six starts he allowed only seven earned runs and one homer.

Jered Weaver (11-11 3.14 ERA) Los Angeles Angels

Weaver has lost four consecutive decisions but hasn't exactly been getting much run support from his teammates.

Weaver has allowed 14 earned runs over his last 26 innings. The Halos have scored just one run in those games.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tampa Bay Rays at Toronto Blue Jays (-130, 9)

Rays manager Joe Maddon set a lofty goal for his starting rotation before the season - 1,000 total innings. The Rays are on target, but that's no necesasrily a good thing.

Starting pitching has carried the Rays this season bu signs of fatigue are starting to show. Only one starter has lasted more than six innings in their last eight games.

"Our pitching has carried us all year, if you ask me," Rays outfielder B.J. Upton said. "They set expectations for themselves in spring training, and so far, they've lived up to them."

James Shields takes the hill today after recently becoming the team's all-time wins leader, but he was hammered by Baltimore in his last outing and lasted just 4 1/3 innings.

Toronto counters with young lefty Brett Cecil, whom the Jays have carefully paced this season. The Rays are batting just .196 against lefties in their last 10 games.

Pick: Blue Jays

Philadelphia Phillies at New York Mets (210, 7.5)

The Phillies relied on pitching to get them a tough stretch of injuries and a long slump in hitting, but the team is starting to get healthy and hot at the right time.

The Phillies have won 11 of their last 14 games overall and 12 of their last 14 on the road to overtake the Atlanta Braves for the lead in the NL East. And their just getting started.

"I definitely feel like we've got a good run in us," Phillies amanager Charlie Manuel said. "I feel like we can play better than we have at any time this year because we have all of our players back. We're more solid. We're more equipped to do that."

A resurgent offense deserves much of the credit. They are batting .288 and averaging almost six runs per game over their last 10 outings.

Shane Victorinia (.444), Chase Utley (.368) and Ryan Howard (.316 with five homers) have increased their production during that stretch and should keep swinging a hot stick against Mets' reliever Jenrry Mejia, who is making his first start of the season.

Phillies starter Roy Halladay has been struggling lately, allowing 10 earned runs and seven homers in his last three starts, but should get enough run support in this one.

Pick: Over

This Day in Baseball
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On September 10 in Baseball History...

1881 - In a game in Albany, Troy's Roger Connor hits the first grand slam in National League history. The blow comes off Worcester's Lee Richmond with two out in the bottom of the ninth inning and wins the game 8-7.

1889 - New York Giants pitcher Mickey Welch strikes out as the first pinch hitter in Major League history.

1918 - Players on both sides threaten to strike the World Series unless they are guaranteed $2,500 to the winners and $1,000 each for the losers. They back off, however, when told they will appear greedy while their countrymen are fighting World War I. On the field, Hippo Vaughn comes back with two days of rest for the Cubs and blanks the Red Sox 3-0 in Game Five.

1919 - Cleveland's Ray Caldwell pitched a 3-0 no-hitter against the New York Yankees.

1924 - At the Polo Grounds, the Giants rip the Braves 22-1 in the opener of a doubleheader. Frankie Frisch goes six-for-six before grounding out.

1950 - Joe DiMaggio became the first to hit three home runs in one game at Griffith Stadium as the New York Yankees beat the Washington Senators, 8-1.

1969 - The New York Mets swept the Montreal Expos in a doubleheader at Shea Stadium, 3-2 in 12 innings and 7-1. The victories moved the Mets into first place in the National League East for the first time ever on top.

1974 - Lou Brock tied Maury Wills' single-season stolen base record with a steal in the first inning against the Philadelphia Phillies. He broke the record with steal No. 105 in the seventh inning.

1977 - Roy Howell hit two home runs, two doubles and a single and drove in nine runs as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the New York Yankees, 19-3.

1978 - The Red Sox throw 22-year-old Bobby Sprowl at the Yankees and the lefty last just two-thirds of an inning as the Yankees win 7-4. New York outhits the Red Sox 67-21, and outscores them 42-9, in a sweep that leaves the teams in a tie for first place, and caps a remarkable march to the top from fourth place, 14 games out.

1980 - Bill Gullickson struck out eighteen - the most ever by a rookie - as the Montreal Expos beat the Chicago Cubs, 4-2.

1989 - Five days after hitting a home run for the Yankees in a 12-2 win over the Mariners, Deion Sanders returns a punt 68 yards for a touchdown in his NFL debut with the Atlanta Falcons. He is the first player to accomplish both these feats in the same week at the professional level.

1997 - Mark McGwire joined Babe Ruth as the only players in Major League history with consecutive 50-homer seasons by hitting a 446-foot shot off Shawn Estes in the third inning of St. Louis' game against at San Francisco. McGwire, who hit a Major League-leading fifty-two homers for Oakland last season, became the first player with back-to-back 50-homer seasons since Ruth did it in 1927 and 1928.

Daily Sports Roundup: September 10

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Rangers play host to the Yankees, the Padres take on the Giants, and West Virginia looks for a road victory over the Thundering Herd.

Colliding on the gridiron . . .

The college football schedule offers up two games on Friday, with UTEP at Houston (-20) and No. 23 West Virginia (-13) at Marshall. The ranked Mountaineers cruised to a 31-0 win over Coastal Carolina in their opener last week, with Noel Devine running for 111 yards and a touchdown for West Virginia in that victory. The Thundering Herd will be looking to bounce back from an ugly 45-7 road loss to Ohio State in their first game.

As well, there's one Canadian Football League game on the schedule for Friday, with Calgary at Edmonton. The Stampeders (8-1 SU, 7-2 ATS) pounded the Eskimos (2-7 SU, 3-6 ATS) on Monday night, winning 52-5 at home behind a three-touchdown performance from QB Henry Burris. The oddsmakers have the Stampeders listed as big 10.5-point road favorites for Friday night, with the total for that contest set at 54.5 points.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League schedule for Friday has Minnesota at Cleveland, Baltimore at Detroit, Tampa Bay at Toronto, Kansas City at the White Sox, Boston at Oakland, Seattle at the Angels, and the Yankees at Texas. Javier Vazquez (10-9, 5.01 ERA) will take on C.J. Wilson (14-6, 3.10 ERA) in that Yankees/Rangers matchup. Righthander Vazquez was knocked around by the Rangers back on August 11, giving up six runs on eight hits over his 4 1-3 innings of work. Lefthander Wilson had his four-game winning streak snapped against the Twins last time out, giving up six runs over his 5 1-3 innings.

Over in the National League on Friday it's then Florida at Washington, Pittsburgh at Cincinnati, Philadelphia at the Mets, St. Louis at Atlanta, the Dodgers at Houston, the Cubs at Milwaukee, Arizona at Colorado, and San Francisco at San Diego. The Giants are slated to give the ball to Jonathan Sanchez (10-8, 3.39 ERA) in that last game, while the Padres counter with Clayton Richard (12-6, 3.43 ERA). Lefthander Sanchez dazzled the Dodgers over seven innings of work last time out, holding them scoreless on three hits while fanning nine. Lefthander Richard had to settle for a no-decision against the Rockies last time out despite giving up only two runs in six innings pitched.

Friday's six-pack

Some college football trends to peruse on a football Friday.......

-- Vanderbilt is 8-14 in its last 22 games as a home underdog.

-- Wake Forest is 10-22-1 in its last 23 games as a home favorite.

-- Last seven years, San Diego State is 0-4 as a road favorite.

-- Tulane is 5-14-1 in its last 20 games as a home underdog.

-- Georgia Tech is 5-0 as a road favorite under Paul Johnson.

-- Last five times Michigan visited Notre Dame, the underdog won.

******************************************

Friday's List of 13: Things I'm looking for this weekend

13) Florida Gators struggled bigtime vs Miami last week. South Florida won at Florida State last year, won at Auburn in ‘07; can the Bulls pull a shocker in Gainesville?

12) How will freshman QB Robert Bolden play for Penn State, in his first road start? Not just a road start, but at Alabama. Very tough test for the young kid.

11) Michigan-Notre Dame winner will have lot of momentum towards a turnaround season; would expect a lot of points in South Bend.

10) Padres-Giants series this weekend is huge in the NL West race. You know the Rockies are hoping for a split, so they can gain ground on both rivals.

9) Is Tom Brady OK after his car wreck? Will the Patriot defense look like the train wreck it was at times in the exhibition games?

8) Utah State outgained Oklahoma last week in Norman; are the Aggies improved, or was that a major red flag for the Sooners? Florida State-Oklahoma should be a fun game.

7) Will the US hoop team win the gold medal in Turkey? I’m not a big fan of Mike Kzryzewski being the Olympic coach, things it gives him an unfair advantage in recruiting at Duke, but have to hand it to him, he doesn’t lose many of these things.

6) Jim Joyce is working the plate Friday, with Armando Galarraga on the mound. Just a guess, but this might not end well for the other team.

5) Will the Colts be able to protect Peyton Manning in Houston? Will the no-huddle be slowed down by the new umpire placement rule? Can Houston step up and look like a playoff team?

4) Steelers are a home underdog for first time since 2004, with Dennis Dixon at QB against Atlanta. Emotional game for Steelers.

3) How will Jay Cutler look as the new ringleader of Martz Madness? People are talking up the Lions a little. I’m not sold on them yet.

2) Kansas City is 5-16 against the spread in its last 21 home games. Chargers have dominated the AFC West, but started four of the last five seasons 2-3. Will Norv’s Bolts get off to a good start Monday night?

1) I’m very anxious to see how Sam Bradford plays Sunday; it’s the most excited I’ve been about the Rams since Kurt Warner was stupidly let go back in 2004.

Bettors' best friend: Friday's wagering tips

Lines to keep an eye on

Mariners at Angels: Total opened at 7 but has climbed to 7.5.

Red Sox at Athletics: Total opened at 7 but has slipped to 6.5.

UTEP at Houston: Houston opened at -16.5 but are now listed as -20 favorite at most books.

Weather to watch

No weather concerns.

Who's hot

Phillies are 12-2 in last 14 on road.

Padres are 9-2 in last 11 vs. Giants.

Twins are 8-1 in their last nine.

Rockies have won six in a row.

Who's not

Pirates are 9-45 in their last 54 road games.

Cardinals are 1-7 in their last eight on the road.

Dodgers are 1-7 in their last eight.

Reds and Rangers are 1-5 in their last six.

Key stat

210 - Total bases by Atlanta Braves rookie Jason Heyward, surpassing Hank Aaron for second on the team's all-time list for players age 20 or younger. He needs 26 more to tie Eddie Matthews at 236.

Injury that shouldn't be overlooked

Minnesota Twins designated hitter Jim Thome was scratched from the lineup for Wednesday's game against Kansas City with a mild abdominal strain and is listed as day-to-day. The 40-year-old slugger is hitting .278 with 22 home runs and 52 RBIs this season. He will likely be replaced by Jose Morales in the lineup.

Game of the day

New York Yankees at Texas Rangers (-145, 9.5)

Notable quotable

"I am the best back in the league and he is not. I don't think it's close."

Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson told the Tennessean when asked to compare himself to Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson.

Tips and notes

West Virginia has dominated Marshall ever since they renewed the "Coal Bowl" rivalry four years ago, but this time the Thundering Herd have a little inside info. First-year coach Doc Holliday (no, not that Doc Holliday) is not only a WVU grad, he served two stints as an assistant in Morgantown, most recently as associate head coach under Bill Stewart. He had a big hand in recruiting the current crop of Mountaineers and game-planning, so his knowledge may go a long way for the Herd.

Georgia junior wideout A.J. Green was suspended by the NCAA on Wednesday for the team's next three games as a condition of becoming eligible again. The ban comes after the NCAA examined whether he broke rules by selling a game-worn jersey. Georgia will appeal the decision but no decision will be made before Green misses Saturday's contests against 24th-ranked South Carolina. In last year's 41-37 win over the Gamecocks Green caught six passes for 86 yards and a touchdown.

Three days before the season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals and New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady has already taken his hardest hit of the year. Brady was involved in a two-car accident Thursday morning but was uninjured. The crash occurred on the corner of Commonwealth Avenue and Gloucester Street in Boston. The jaws of life were used to remove the driver of the other vehicle and Brady was visibly "shaken" but he refused to go to a hospital.

Oakland Raiders running back Michael Bush sat out Thursday's practice, increasing the likelihood he will miss Sunday's season opener against the Tennessee Titans. Bush practiced Tuesday and Wednesday despite nursing a thumb injury. Coach Tom Cable said he wanted to keep tabs on the status of Bush's injury before determining whether he would play Sunday's opener. RB Darren McFadden is expected to get the bulk of the carries even if Bush is able to play.
