Iowa destroys Iowa State, drops in the polls:think2:. No, it
doesn’t make much sense to me, either, but if that’s
your excuse for punting the annual series with the
Cyclones, you’re reaching, my friends.
Do you know how many times since 2003 the
Hawkeyes have slipped in the coaches’ poll
following a win over Iowa State? Once. This week, a
dip from No. 9 to No. 10. Relax. It’s early.
As far as the future of the series, Iowa athletic
director Gary Barta has said the ball is in the Big
Ten’s court. Here’s hoping they keep it in play. In
addition to being the single-biggest one-day
sporting event in the state, the Big Game is one of
Iowa’s national television showcases. It’s more than
just tradition; it’s our front porch. As long as Kirk
Ferentz and Paul Rhoads are pushing the buttons in
Iowa City and Ames, respectively, it’ll stay that way.
With the Big 12 expanding its conference slate from
eight to nine games and the Big Ten likely doing the
same before the decade ends, some Iowa fans — not
all, mind you — are looking for any viable rationale
to move the series to a semi-annual rotation. Or take
it off the schedule entirely. They’ll point to the
polls. They’ll point to Iowa’s three straight wins in
since 2008 by an average score of 29-5.
Mind you, these are a lot of the same people who
also wanted out after the Cyclones won five in a row
from 1998-2002. They were wrong then. And they’
re wrong now.
