Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

Jorge De La Rosa (7-4, 4.10 ERA)

The only thing hotter than De La Rosa is the team for which he plays. Colorado is in the midst of one of its usual September surges and De La Rosa is a big reason why.

The lefty has lasted no fewer than 5.1 innings and allowed no more than three earned runs in any of his past 10 starts dating back to July 22. He has taken the loss in only one of his last eight outings, and even then he pitched seven innings of two-run ball.

De La Rosa is coming off a stellar performance last Friday against Arizona, going six innings and giving just five hits and two runs while striking out 10 and walking none.
“De La Rosa is throwing the ball very reminiscent of what we saw an awful lot of last year,” MLB.com reported Colorado manager Jim Tracy as saying.

Jered Weaver, Los Angeles Angels (11-11, 3.02 ERA)

Weaver has two losses and a no-decision to show for it, but he has continued to throw the ball well over his past three starts.

The 6’7’’ righty struck out 11 and allowed only one run in eight innings of work but lost 1-0 to Baltimore on August 29. In his last two outings combined he has went 15 innings with 11 strikeouts and just four runs allowed.

“It is what it is,” Weaver told the Los Angeles Times when asked about his lack of run support. “I can only go out there and do my job, go out there and battle. I was brought up not to give up. My dad would kick me in the ass if he saw me out there not battling.”

Slumping

Paul Maholm, Pittsburgh Pirates (7-14, 5.37 ERA)

Maholm pitched seven innings on Friday and gave up only three runs to the Reds. That’s a remarkable performance…at least by Maholm standards.

In his previous two outings, surrendered a combined 15 earned runs in 7.2 innings. Those numbers resulted in a 14-2 loss to the Cubs and a 9-2 setback against the Nationals.

The Pirates have won only one of Maholm’s last seven starts and he has not earned a win, himself, since August 3.

Homer Bailey, Cincinnati Reds (3-3, 4.70 ERA)

Bailey has not been terrible of late. In fact, he has clearly been good enough for a Cincinnati team that is seven games up in the NL Central.

Still, he better improve by the time the Reds presumably head into the playoffs. Bailey pitched seven innings of one-run ball last Friday, but that came against the Pirates.

In three previous outings, the righty lasted no more than six innings and allowed between four and five earned runs. He has not earned a win in any of his last four starts.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tips and Trends
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Minnesota Twins at Chicago White Sox [8:10 PM ET]

TWINS: Minnesota has one of the largest leads in division play, a 6 game lead in the American League Central. The Twins are playing great baseball, having won 8 of their past 10 games. Coach Gardenhire is on the short list for Manager of the Year, as he is doing another outstanding coaching job in Minnesota. The Twins are 85-58 SU this year, including a winning road record of 37-35 SU. Minnesota is +16.61 and -2.57 units both SU and on the RL respectively this year. Lefty Brian Duensing is 8-2 this season with an ERA of 2.02 and a WHIP of 1.07. Duensing has been brilliant this year, and a major reason for the success of the Twins. The Twins are 39-15 in their last 54 games overall. Minnesota is 56-24 in their last 80 games against the American League Central. The Twins are 23-8 in their last 31 games against a right-handed starter. Minnesota is 20-8 in their last 28 games against a starter with a WHIP greater than 1.30. The Twins are 4-0 in Duensing's last 4 starts against the American League Central. Minnesota is 4-1 in Duensing's last 5 starts following a Quality Start in his last appearance. The Twins are 0-4 in Duensing's last 4 road starts against a team with a winning record.

Twins are 5-0 last 5 games during game 2 of a series.
Under is 7-0 last 7 road games against a right-handed starter.

Key Injuries - 1B Justin Morneau (concussion) is out.

Projected Score: 5 (SIDE of the Day)

WHITE SOX: (-110, O/U 8.5) The only legitimate shot Chicago has of making the playoffs rest on their current series with Minnesota. The White Sox trail the Twins by 6 games, so each game they go head to head is simply crucial for Chicago. The White Sox are 79-64 SU this year, including 40-28 SU at home. Chicago is +10.63 and +9.92 units both SU and on the RL overall this season. Righty Gavin Floyd is 10-12 SU this year, with an ERA of 3.91 and a WHIP of 1.35 this year. The White Sox are 6-0 in their last 6 games against a starter with a WHIP less than 1.15. Chicago is 9-4 in their last 13 home games against a left-handed starter. The White Sox are 27-10 in their last 37 home games overall. The White Sox are 4-1 in Floyd's last 5 starts with 5 days of rest. Chicago is 12-5 in Floyd's last 17 home starts against a team with a winning record. The White Sox are 0-4 in Floyd's last 4 starts against the American League Central.

White Sox are 13-4 last 17 home games against a team with a winning record.
Over is 13-4 last 17 games against the American League Central.

Key Injuries - None Reported.

Projected Score: 4

Chicago Cubs at St. Louis Cardinals [ESPN | 8:15 PM ET]

CUBS: Any member of the Cubs faithful should be extremely proud of their franchise, as they are playing out the season the right way. Despite being only 63-81 SU this year, the Cubs are playing their best baseball of the year right now. The past 4 wins Chicago has had have come as the listed underdog, making the Cubs a great team to wager on closing out the year. In fact, the Cubs very well might be last year's version of the San Diego Padres. Chicago is -26.30 and -10.06 units both SU and on the RL this year. One of the better surprises of late has been the form of Carlos Zambrano. Zambrano has won his past 3 starts, with an ERA of 0.86 and a WHIP of 0.95 during that stretch. The Cubs are 9-3 in their last 12 road games overall. Chicago is 6-2 in their last 8 road games against a right-handed starter. The Cubs are 4-0 in Zambrano's last 4 starts. The Cubs are 4-1 in Zambrano's last 5 starts following a Quality Start in his last appearance. Chicago is 20-6 in Zambrano's last 26 road starts against a team with a winning record. The Cubs are 36-17 in Zambrano's last 53 starts against the National League Central.

Cubs are 7-19 last 26 games against a team with a winning record.
Under is 8-0 last 8 games against the National League Central.

Key Injuries - SS Starlin Castro (hip) is questionable.

Projected Score: 1

CARDINALS: (-205, O/U 7) With the starting pitching that St. Louis has, it's been amazing to see this team fall from the top of the National League Central division standings. The Cardinals are 74-68 SU this year, 6 games behind Cincinnati. 6 of the past 10 games the Cardinals pitching staff has allowed 5 runs or more. St. Louis is -21.11 and -14.94 units both SU and on the RL respectively this season. The only chance the Cardinals have of making the playoffs rest on beating inferior opponents. Ace pitcher Chris Carpenter will take the home mound tonight, looking to do exactly this. Carpenter is 15-6 this season, with an ERA of 3.09 and a WHIP of 1.17. The Cardinals are 19-9 in their last 28 home games against a right-handed starter. St. Louis is 4-13 in their last 17 games against the National League Central. The Cardinals are 1-4 in their last 5 games against a starter with a WHIP greater than 1.30. The Cardinals are 1-5 in their last 6 games during game 3 of a series. St. Louis is 22-5 in Carpenter's last 27 home starts against a team with a losing record. The Cardinals are 23-8 in Carpenter's last 31 starts with 4 days of rest.

Cardinals are 5-16 last 21 games against a team with a losing record.
Under is 5-0 last 5 home games against a right-handed starter.

Key Injuries - 3B David Freese (ankle) is out.

Projected Score: 3 (UNDER-Total of the Day)

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Yankees at Tampa Bay Rays (-101, 9)

Derek Jeter has been mired in an unusual slump, having hit .168 over the past four weeks, and that is a big reason why the Yankees have unable to pull away from Tampa Bay in the American League East. In fact, New York trailed by a half game as of Tuesday evening.

In an attempt to get back on track, Jeter put in an extensive session with hitting coach Kevin Long after Saturday’s loss to Texas. The shortstop went 1-for-2 with two walks on Sunday, but recorded only one hit in five at-bats against the Rays on Monday. “I was excited about his at-bats,” Long told the New York Daily News after Sunday’s game. “I think he made a move in the right direction. We have a long way to go, but it's a start in the right direction.”

The Yankees need to get back on the right track, themselves, having lost four in a row. They just might do it on Wednesday; they are 21-9 in Phil Hughes’ last 30 starts and 14-4 in Hughes’ last 18 starts on four days of rest. The Yankees are also 5-1 the last six times they have faced Scott Shields in Tampa Bay.

Pick: Yankees

San Diego Padres at Colorado Rockies (-145, 9)

What is it about the Colorado Rockies and the late-season surge?

Last year they went 21-8 in their last 29 games. Two years ago they went 20-11 in their last 31. Both times they secured the National League Wild Card.

What are the Rockies doing for an encore? On September 2, they found themselves 7.5 games out of first place in the National League West. As of Tuesday, Colorado is 9-1 in its last 10 games, is just 2.5 games back of San Diego, and is within three of Atlanta for the Wild Card.

“It’s amazing,” center fielder Carlos Gonzalez said in an interview with the New York Times. “I guess we save it for the end. We make it more exciting for everybody.”

“That’s the weird part about this game,” added Jason Giambi, who hit a pinch-hit game-winning homer on Sunday. “Mentally, if you just believe ‘I know we’re going to do great in September’ — which all of these guys do — it usually happens.”

Mentally, the Rockies have to like their chances against San Diego on Wednesday. Not only are they streaking, but they have won 18 of Jorge De La Rosa’s last 21 home starts. De La Rosa has pitched at least five innings and has given up no more than three earned runs in each of his past 10 starts dating back to July 22.

Pick: Rockies

This Day in Baseball
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On September 15 in Baseball History...

1904 - Giants rookie Hooks Wiltse wins his 12th straight game, setting a Major League mark for consecutive games won at the start of a career. It will be tied by relief hurler Butch Metzger in 1976.

1912 - Joe Wood of the Boston Red Sox pitched his 16th consecutive victory to tie Walter Johnson's record as he beat the St. Louis Browns 2-1.

1922 - Catcher Butch Henline is the first National League player to hit three homers in a game since 1897, as the Phils beat the Cards 10-9. Henline's third home run tied the game in the ninth inning and Cliff Lee then hit the game-winning home run.

1931 - The Philadelphia Athletics clinch the pennant, beating Cleveland at home. Eddie Rommel, veteran knuckleball pitcher for the A's, is the winning hurler, as Connie Mack wins his third successive pennant. It is Mack's ninth, and last, American League championship.

1938 - Brothers Waner and Paul Waner hit back-to-back homers for the Pittsburgh Pirates off Cliff Melton of the New York Giants. This was the only time brothers hit successive home runs in a Major League game. It was Lloyd Waner's last homer.

1946 - The Brooklyn Dodgers beat the Chicago Cubs 2-0 in five innings when the game was called because of gnats. The insects became such a problem for the players, umpires and fans that the game had to be stopped.

1952 - The Braves play their last game in Boston's Braves Field before moving to Milwaukee, losing to Brooklyn's Joe Black 8-2. The crowd of 8,822 is the second largest of the season at the ballpark.

1963 - All three Alou brothers - Felipe, Matty and Jesus - played in the outfield at the same time for the San Francisco Giants in a 13-5 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

1969 - St. Louis left-hander Steve Carlton struck out 19 Mets for a nine-inning game record. New York won the game 4-3 on two, two-run homers by Ron Swoboda.

1977 - The Orioles forfeit to the Blue Jays when manager Earl Weaver pulls his team off the field in the fifth inning citing a hazardous condition, a small tarpaulin held down by bricks on the bullpen mound.

1979 - Bob Watson of the Red Sox became the first to hit for the cycle in both leagues as he led Boston to a 10-2 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. He hit for the cycle with the Houston Astros against San Francisco on June 24, 1977.

Daily Sports Roundup: September 15

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Rays play host to the Yankees in the finale of a big three-game set, while the Cubs and Cardinals finish off their series down in St. Louis.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League schedule for Wednesday features Boston at Seattle, Toronto at Baltimore, the Angels at Cleveland, Detroit at Texas, Oakland at Kansas City, Minnesota at the White Sox, and the Yankees at Tampa Bay. Phil Hughes (16-7, 4.26 ERA) is expected to get the ball for New York in that last contest, while the Rays go with James Shields (13-12, 4.98 ERA). Righthander Hughes last started against the Blue Jays on September 5, giving up six runs on seven hits over his six innings of work in a loss. Righthander Shields also pitched against the Blue Jays in his most recent trip to the mound, surrendering five runs (four earned) on seven hits over five innings of work.

The National League schedule for Wednesday then offers up Washington at Atlanta, Milwaukee at Houston, San Diego at Colorado, Philadelphia at Florida, Pittsburgh at the Mets, Arizona at Cincinnati, the Dodgers at San Francisco, and the Cubs at St. Louis. Chicago will send Carlos Zambrano (8-6, 3.88 ERA) to the mound on Wednesday night, while the Cardinals go with Chris Carpenter (15-6, 3.09 ERA). Righthander Zambrano has picked up the win in each of his last four starts, beating the Brewers last time out (8 2-3 shutout innings). Righthander Carpenter will be looking to bounce back from an ugly loss to the Braves in which he gave up eight runs (six earned) over five innings of work.

Bettors’ best friend: Wednesday’s wagering tips

Lines to keep an eye on

Twins at White Sox: The White Sox opened at -109, but they have since moved to -104.

Diamondbacks at Reds: The Reds opened at -180, but they have since moved to -192.

Weather to watch

Phillies at Marlins: There is a 20 percent chance of thunderstorms and a 15 mph win is expected to be blowing in straight from center field to home plate.

Cubs at Cardinals: An 11 mph wind is expected to blow in from right field toward the third base line.

Who’s hot

The Rangers are 5-0 in their last five overall and 4-0 in their last four against right-handed starters.

The Rockies are 6-1 in their last seven against the National League West and they are 18-3 in De La Rosa’s last 21 home starts.

The over is 5-1 in the Braves’ last six overall.

Who’s not

The Yankees are 0-5 in their last five against teams with winning records.

The Nationals are 0-6 in their last six overall.

The over is 0-7 in the Cubs’ last seven overall.

Key stat

33 – Arian Foster’s 231 rushing yards and three touchdowns jump off the page, but don’t overlook the number of carries he had against Indianapolis. His 33 rushes were six more than any other player in the league. Even with Matt Schaub and Andre Johnson on board, it’s clear the Texans will be featuring a ground game this season.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

New York Jets’ defensive tackle Kris Jenkins tore the ACL in his left knee during Monday night’s loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Jenkins, of course, is done for the season. He played in just six games last year, but had dropped 30 pounds during the offseason and was expected to be the leader on New York’s defensive line. While the Jets are talented on defense, they are not deep. Washington DT Albert Haynesworth could be on the trading block and as of Tuesday night the Jets had not ruled out making a pitch to the Redskins.

Biggest game on the slate

New York Yankees at Tampa Bay Rays (-101, 9)

Notable quotable

“I still feel like I can play at a high level. I feel like if I’d been out there for four quarters, maybe we’d have had a chance to win the game.” -- Michael Vick, who completed 16 of 24 passes for 175 yards and one touchdown after replacing Kevin Kolb in Philadelphia’s 27-20 loss to Green Bay. Vick also rushed 11 times for 103 yards.

Tips and notes

Purdue might not want to overlook Ball State after starting the season with a loss at Notre Dame followed by a narrow 31-21 win over Western Illinois. Now star receiver Keith Smith is out for the season with a torn MCL in his right knee. Smith led the Big Ten last year with 91 receptions and 1,100 receiving yards. “It’s unfortunate and certainly a setback for our team until we get some other guys ready to go,” coach Danny Hope told the Indianapolis Star. “Keith’s a great player, and he’s not easily replaced. We have some other guys that are really good players that will do very good with the opportunity, but it is a setback for our team.”

Dennis Dixon did enough to get the Steelers a 15-9 overtime win against Atlanta on Sunday, but he threw two interceptions and should have been picked off three times but Chauncey Davis dropped what should have been a sure turnover. Coach Mike Tomlin announced on Tuesday that Dixon will get another start in Week 2 for what looks like an extremely tough matchup at Tennessee. Dixon also won’t have Max Starks protecting him. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that Starks’ ankle injury is not as serious as feared, but he will still miss at least one game.

Wednesday's six-pack

-- 2011 baseball schedule comes out today. Arizona-Giants will play a couple games in Taiwan to start the regular season.

-- Something different next year; season will start on Friday April 1, rather than the usual Monday starting date.

-- Giants are hurt by appendectomy to CF Andres Torres; he'll miss at least a couple weeks. He's been a sparkplug for San Francisco.

-- Aaron Cunningham led off for Padres last night, ninth different guy to bat leadoff for first place San Diego this season.

-- Orioles have won four straight series for first time since '04, are now 25-15 under Buck Showalter; thats 25% of a full season.

-- If World Golf rankings were on a 1-year schedule instead of 2 years, Eldrick Woods would rank 52nd in the world. He is currently 1st.

Wednesday's List of 13: Random mid-week knowledge.......

13) Over last four years, football Giants averaged 34.8 ppg in first road game of the year (3-1); Big Blue heads to Indy this week for Manning Bowl II, against a Colt team whose defense got shredded in Houston.

12) Surprising stat: LSU is just 9-8 in its last 17 SEC games. Les Miles is 12-27-4 vs. spread in conference games since coming to Baton Rouge.

11) So far in college football, home faves are 7-3 vs. spread in conference games.

10) Home favorites are 25-20 vs. spread in non-league games, with SEC teams 7-3, Pac-10 3-1, Big 11 5-2, Big 12 teams 7-5.

9) Sun Belt teams are 6-3 vs. spread as road dog in non-league games; Big East teams are 4-2, Pac-10/Mountain West both just 1-3.

8) Home underdogs are 7-7 in non-conference games. Interesting game in Seattle Saturday, where Jake Locker’s Washington Huskies are home dog to unbeaten Nebraska.

7) This is the fifth year in a row New England’s first road game is in the Jersey Swamp, against the Jets; LY’s 16-7 Jet win was first time in nine years they beat the Pats at home.

6) I’m thinking its good for the Jets to have a short week this week; less time to stew over Monday night’s debacle. Lot of pressure on Gang Green this Sunday; they don’t want to start 0-2 at PSL Stadium.

5) Carolina lost five of its last six home openers, going 0-6 vs. spread. Question is, will John Fox go to a rookie QB (Clausen) this year? Fox is probably a lame duck, since Carolina doesn’t want a high-priced head coach, so he’s trying to spruce up his resume for his next employer Developing a QB for the next Carolina coach wouldn’t seem to make a lot of sense for Fox.

4) Something has to give in Oakland Sunday; Rams lost last eight road openers (outscored 90-6 in last three); they’re 0-10 vs. spread in road openers since their magical ’99 season, but Raiders lost their last five home openers. Someone has to win.

3) Broncos won their last ten home openers (7-2-1 vs. spread)

2) Steelers lost seven of last eight visits to Tennessee, allowing 31.7 ppg in losing last three trips to Nashville.

1) Some NFL coaches are going to see old friends this weekend; Romeo Crennel is going back to Cleveland (fired two years ago), Texans are visiting Washington (LY’s OC Kyle Shanahan is working for his dad in DC now) and when the Eagles visit Ford Field, former Lion coach Marty Mornhinweg goes back to the Motor City—he was 5-27 as coach of the Lions 2001-2, as part of the failed Matt Millen regime.

NL West still up for grabs

The most exciting playoff race in baseball is out in the NL West where the Padres lead the Giants by 1.5 games entering Wednesday. The Rockies still lurk 3.5 games behind and hope to avoid a sweep at the hands of San Diego in the series finale at Coors Field. Meanwhile, the Giants square off with the Dodgers in the middle game of a three-game set at AT&T Park.
SAN DIEGO PADRES (82-62)
at COLORADO ROCKIES (79-66)

First pitch: Wednesday, 3:10 p.m. EDT
Line: San Diego -135, Colorado +105, Total: 9

A pair of hot pitchers face-off in Denver when Clayton Richard (12-7, 3.36 ERA) and the Padres meet Jorge De La Rosa (7-4, 4.10 ERA) and the Rockies. The two met September 5 in San Diego, resulting in a 4-2 Rockies win.

Richard has been a tough-luck loser as of late, going 0-2 in his past three starts, but with a stellar 1.82 ERA. He took the loss last time out against San Francisco despite giving up just one run on two hits over six innings of work. Prior to that he gave up two runs (one earned) in the aforementioned outing against Colorado. In fact, Richard hasn’t surrendered more than two runs in any of his past six starts.

De La Rosa has also been impressive, going 2-0 over his last three outings with an ERA of 2.37. He allowed two runs on five hits in six innings while striking out 10 in his last outing, a win against Arizona. Like Richard, De La Rosa has kept runs to a minimum recently, not yielding more than two in any of his last five starts. The Rockies have won his last four outings.

The FoxSheets like Colorado here:

COLORADO is 19-7 (+13.8 Units) against the money line with double revenge - 2 straight losses against opponent this season. The average score was COLORADO 5.2, OPPONENT 3.0 - (Rating = 2*).

LOS ANGELES DODGERS (72-73)
at SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS (81-64)

First pitch: Wednesday, 10:15 p.m. EDT
Line: San Francisco -125, Los Angeles +105, , Total: 7

The Giants look to inch closer to San Diego when they send Matt Cain (11-10, 3.19 ERA) to the mound Wednesday night to take on the Dodgers. Chad Billingsley (11-9, 3.65 ERA) gets the call for Los Angeles.

Cain has been impressive at home this year, going 7-3 with a 2.70 ERA. He earned a win his last outing when he went eight innings, allowing three runs on only five hits in a 7-3 win over the Padres. Cain met the Dodgers on September 4 and didn’t factor into the decision, giving up four runs in seven innings. He’s struggled with LA in his career, carrying a 1-8 record in 16 starts into this matchup.

Billingsley was brilliant two starts ago when he faced the Giants in Chavez Ravine. The right-hander went eight innings giving up two runs – none earned – on just two hits while picking up the win. He’s enjoyed great success against San Francisco in his career, going 5-2 with a 2.33 ERA in 14 starts. The Dodgers are 9-5 in those games, and have won three of the last four.

Given Billingsley’s success, the FoxSheets side with Los Angeles:

Play Against - All teams with a money line of -100 to -150 (SAN FRANCISCO) - after scoring 1 or less runs in a loss to a division rival, starting a pitcher who walked <=1 hitters each of his last 2 outings. (115-79 since 1997.) (59.3%, +50.7 units. Rating = 3*).
