I have a Sony Vaio and use Windows 7 Home. I'm giving this computer to a friend next week. I want to clean it out but It came with no disks. Usually I would use boot and nuke but there are no disks to restore the system with. What should i do

Go into bios, setup system password that will block him out of your folders. Setup "Guest" account that will allow him to use all other stuff. Put all your porn and that sort of important stuff into your "My Documents" area, he won't access.

I dont want to do that, I just want to wipe it. I dont have porn stored, but i do have personal info i wouldnt want him seeing. Why do these computers not come with disks? Maybe theres a system restore that will do the trick?

Point is no need to wipe, just store personal stuff under MyDocs and he will not be able to access it by default. Go into Control Panel-Accounts and create new account for friend and set password. I'm with you in that I hate that they don't issue restore disks anymore. I would not trust System Restore in this case, I have seen it act flaky. You could also move all files onto cd or dvd and put it back later.

You might be able to get the disks from Sony. It might cost $5.00 or something. I thought Sony had some type of function where boot disks could be made. I am almost sure they do.

If you're giving it to him for keeps, why not just delete everything? Also, your friend is going to need admin access so just creating a "guest" password will restrict him for having full access of any possible programs you have on your computer. I sure wouldn't leave any personal info on the computer though.

You can get some answers by clicking help and support. Just type in "reinstall windows 7."

It's pretty fucked up that they don't give a disc anymore. In the past you could at least pay an extra $10 to get the disc with a computer. You should be able to backup windows on a USB/DVD or you can back it up and pay $35-40 to back it up with a internet host.

Also, as long as you have the Windows key number, you can have windows reinstalled at any computer place w/o having a disc.

So i called their support and a dude from the phillipines who was flirting with me told how to do the system restore with and w/o disks. Whats the difference between doing the restore w/o disks and using boot and nuke and then reinstalling? does the system restore wipe the C-drive as effectively boot and and nuke does? or should i copy the disks, use boot and nuke and then reinstall?

if I remember correctly all system restore does is ask you for a date when you want the computer set back to. so say you set it back to the first day you bought it. that is exactly what it will restore to. not sure if it completely whips out all the other stuff or not.

I don't believe the Pig is using the term System Restore correctly. I think he means returning it to the way it was when he first bought it.

TP...am I right.

no...he understands what he is saying...but he wants to format and start from scratch but does not have a disc to reload the OS after he formats....so he called tech support and instead of telling him to format and reload a fresh OS...they beat around the bush and told him about system restore option....which is not the same as completely formatting and starting a new fresh OS.

atleast that was the impression I got.

System recovery restores all the Windows kernel files and basically rebuilds Windows, but it leaves everything else (virus', files ect)

while a format wipes everything...

You are correct. Sony is referring to this as a system restore. I'm bemoaning the fact that I use to just wipe the thing with Boot and Nuke and then reinstall with the disks provided and everything went well. I did the complete system restore not just for the c drive and it took 1.5 hours. The guy there told me it would wipe the hard drive and he said something about partitions, but i dont know much about this stuff. I know my computer was just like the way it was after i first bought and turned it on.

They told me system restore would be enough. I'm just going with what they told me. If I download the same system restore stuff onto disks....use boot and nuke and then reinstall using the disks...do you think theres a chance that I'll have an issue getting the windows 7 system installed?

your files are still there....just on a different partition. the new user of the PC would really have to go out of his way to find them and recover them though. which I doubt he'll do.
