Report: Broncos receiver Kenny McKinley found dead
Posted by Mike Florio on September 20, 2010 9:03 PM ET
Josina Anderson of FOX 31 in Denver reports that Broncos receiver Kenny McKinley has been found dead, apparently due to a suicide.

The 23-year-old McKinley, a fifth-round pick in 2009 from South Carolina, appeared in eight games last season before landing on injured reserve. He was again placed on injured reserve to start the 2010 season.

At South Carolina, McKinley caught 207 passes, and he generated more than 2,700 receiving yards.

Our thoughts and condolences go out to McKinley's family, teammates, and friends, and to the entire Broncos organization.

South Carolina Head Coach Steve Spurrier issued a statement on our local new here in SC just moments ago. He said McKinely was one of his alltime favorite players and just a great guy. He also said he doesn't understand why these things have to happen and it is a very sad day for our state. McKinley holds the schools record for receptions and receiving yards.

You just don't know what's going on in a person's head or what their tipping point is. His dream was probably to play in the NFL, which he achieved. He went to the GA/SC game on Sep 11 and people who saw him said he seemed ok.

An investigative report regarding the late Denver Broncos wide receiver Kenny McKinley revealed a major gambling problem and serious debts when he committed suicide, according to the Associated Press.
McKinley shot himself with a gun he bought from fellow Broncos wide receiver Jabar Gaffney.
Per the report, McKinley had talked about suicide with friends that included former Broncos backup quarterback Tom Brandstater. McKinley was lent $65,000 from Brandstater and owed $40,000 in Las Vegas casino markers.
Shortly after he underwent season-ending surgery, McKinley was depressed and committed suicide.
He was also being threatened with a paternity suit in addition to being ordered to pay child support for another baby.
According to Brandstater, McKinley had a "major gambling problem."
A week before lending hin money, Brandstater said McKinley told him "that he could save everyone the burden and just kill himself."

Depression can be lethal.

Never suffered through depression and I know people that do suffer with depression have a hard go at it. But since suicide is in someway considered an act of selfishness and depression leads to suicide, Shouldn't depression be considered more of a character/personality issue of being self involved rather than a chemical imbalance or mental disorder?

You can NOT be serious with this logic. Can you?

Okay so if a husband with children gets depressed because his wife left him and he kills her... Do you NOT call the guy a selfish piece of shit? Or do you take pity on him for having a broken heart and not being able to cope with everyday life obstacles that aren't unusual in this day and age? Guarantee if he kills himself out of depression and leaves his children fatherless, you can condone that behavior and just say its sad.

Same thing with those rash of kids getting bullied and committing suicide as a result. People are quick to blame the bullies and want to charge them with crimes. However if the same kid gets bullied and instead of offing himself he decides to take the gun to school and turn it on a classmate, he is a maniac and being bullied should be no excuse?

I know I am person who thinks outside of the box a lot of the times. I just feel you can't have things both ways.

A very close friend of mine committed suicide in 07 , he like many others with depression had a lot of problems with life/women/work ect. For awhile he was on meds and it seemed to be working . I guess behind closed doors it wasn't. Ive learned one thing , if a person even mentions the word suicide and in anyway these need to be taken serious and you need to do whatever you can to help.
