Reggie Garrett’s mom: Teen QB who died had no history of health problems

Reggie Garrett, the West Orange High School quarterback who passed away Friday night after throwing a touchdown, had no history of seizures or health issues, according to his mother.

Speaking to NBC’s “Today,” Jo Ann Parkinson indicated that her son had never suffered a seizure despite early reports that the 17-year-old had previously suffered from them, the last one being as recent as three years ago.
There were “no signs of any health concerns,” she said.
By the time she was notified about the incident and reached the field, Garrett was unconscious.

“When I got to the field, he was already out,” she said. “I really don’t know what to say, or what happened.”

Garrett died at Orange Baptist Hospital around an hour after arriving.
Garrett’s family was very close to the family of Earl Thomas, the former Texas Longhorns standout and current Denver Bronco who also attended West Orange.

After building a relationship with Garrett after summer workouts, Thomas asked West Orange to allow Garrett to wear his #12, which was retired by the school.
"That's the jersey he died in," Thomas told The Denver Post. "He was something special. His death is just a shocker for everybody; it really affected the whole community."

Garrett was a huge fan of the Texas Longhorns. During his Monday press conference, Texas Longhorns head coach address the family.

"We send our thoughts and prayers to the family of Reggie Garrett,” Brown said. “He and his family were very close friends with Earl Thomas' family. What a tragic thing for those kids and coaches and everybody in that community.”

“Everybody is struggling over it. That's... I just can't imagine."
