Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

Roy Halladay (19-10, 2.49 ERA), Philadelphia Phillies

Halladay has won three straight and nine of his last 11, but hasn’t exactly been his untouchable self over the last little while. He has given up at least three runs in each of his last five starts while also serving up nine home runs. He is coming off a 10-5 win over Florida in which he gave up three runs on 10 hits over six innings while striking out nine.

Carlos Zambrano (9-6, 3.75 ERA), Chicago Cubs

Zambrano has been a completely different pitcher since returning to the Cubs after he attended anger-management treatment. He’s 6-0 over eight starts since Aug. 9 and has allowed only three runs over his last four outings. Zambrano has only allowed seven home runs this season.

Slumping

Philip Hughes (16-8, 4.31 ERA) New York Yankees

Hughes has dropped two of his last three starts and has allowed 10 runs over his last two starts. He dropped a 4-3 decision his last time out against Tampa Bay, giving up four runs and a pair of homers over six hits. He went 6 2/3 innings over 106 pitches.

St. Louis at Pittsburgh (+130, 8.5)

The Aug. 10 brawl between the St. Louis Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds has claimed Jason LaRue’s career. LaRue, who was kicked repeatedly in the face by Johnny Cueto during the melee, has officially retired as he continues to deal with post-concussion symptoms.

"It's unfortunate that the blow that decided it came from someone kicking me in the head with spikes,” LaRue told reporters. “I wouldn't say I would change things if you could rewrite history. They say things happen for certain reasons. In this case, I couldn't tell you why. Does it suck that my career is over because Johnny Cueto started kicking me in the head? Yes, it sucks.”

LaRue will join the team in Pittsburgh on Monday to take in one final road trip with the club and visit a concussion specialist at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Pick: Cardinals

Cleveland at Minnesota (-155, 8)

Minnesota catcher Joe Mauer, who is second in the AL with a .331 batting average, jammed his left knee on Sunday and is expected to be out of the lineup for at least a few days, adding to the Twins’ injury woes. Jason Kubel and Denard Span are also out with nagging injuries while there is no timetable for Justin Morneau’s return, who is battling post-concussion syndrome.

The Twins had won six of their last eight games heading into Monday’s game.

Pick: Under

This Day in Baseball
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On September 21 in Baseball History...

1922 - The Americna League reinstates the Most Valuable Player award, last given in 1914, appointing a committee of one writer from each city. The trophy goes to George Sisler. The National League will pick up the idea two years later.

1923 - Babe Ruth is the unanimous choice of the American League committee of baseball writers for the Most Valuable Player Award.

1934 - Dizzy Dean of the St. Louis Cardinals pitched a no-hitter against the Brooklyn Dodgers for 3-0 victory in the second game of an Ebbets Field doubleheader.

1939 - The National League announces that for the first time in the 20th century, games will be transferred from one city to another. A doubleheader in Philadelphia will be moved to Brooklyn in an effort to top one million paid attendance.

1944 - After a 5-15 stretch that ate away a chunk of their 20-game lead, the Cardinals finally clinch the National League flag with a 5-4 win over Boston. They will finish with 105 victories and their third title under Billy Southworth, whose clubs won 316 games in three years.

1957 - Gail Harris is the last player to hit a home run as a New York Giant in a 9-5 win over the Pirates in the second game of a doubleheader. Ruben Gomez gains the last victory for the New York Giants.

1959 - Warren Spahn notches his 20th win and his 266th National League victory to tie Eppa Rixey of the Phils and Reds for the career high in wins by a left-hander. The Braves and the Dodgers are now tied for the lead in the three-team pennant race.

1964 - Manager Gene Mauch's first-place Phillies lost 1-0 to the Cincinnati Reds on Chico Ruiz's steal of home in the sixth inning. It was Philadelphia's first of ten straight losses, a streak that cost the National League pennant.

1970 - Oakland's Vida Blue pitched a no-hitter in his eighth Major League start, beating Minnesota 6-0.

1981 - Steve Carlton struck out Andre Dawson in the third inning for the left-hander's 3,118th career strikeout, the most in the National League. But the Philadelphia Phillies lost to Montreal, 1-0 in 17 innings.

1982 - Playing against the Royals at Anaheim Stadium, outfielders Fred Lynn and Brian Downing crash through the left field fence while trying to catch a fly ball. Lynn makes the catch and it is ruled an out, the umpires reasoning that it is the same as if he had tumbled into the seats.

1986 - No. 1 draft pick Jimmy Jones pitched a one-hitter in his Major League debut, leading the San Diego Padres to a 5-0 victory over the Houston Astros.

1987 - Darryl Strawberry joins Howard Johnson as the first teammates ever to achieve 30 homers and 30 steals in the same season.

1995 - Colorado's John Vander Wal set a Major League record with his 26th pinch-hit of the season, a home run in the seventh inning against San Francisco.

1997 - Mike Piazza becomes the first Dodger, and the first player in 25 years, to hit a ball out of Dodger Stadium. Piazza's 478-foot drive off Colorado's Frank Castillo bounces off the left field pavilion roof. Pittsburgh's Willie Stargell was the only other player to hit a ball out of the stadium (in right field), accomplishing the feat in both 1969 and 1973.

Tips and Trends
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago White Sox at Oakland Athletics [WGN | 10:05 PM ET]

WHITE SOX: Chicago has had a very nice year, going 79-70 SU. Unfortunately, there is little chance that the White Sox faithful will see their team in the post-season this year. Chicago trails the Twins by 10 games in the American League Central division. The White Sox haven't done themselves any favors, as they've gone 2-8 SU in their past 10 games. Chicago is +4.01 and +3.00 units both SU and on the RL this season. Lefty Mark Buehrle will make the road start tonight, as he is 12-11 with an ERA of 4.16 and a WHIP of 1.38 this season. The White Sox are 7-3 last 10 road games against a right-handed starter. Chicago is 6-2 in their last 8 games against a starter with a WHIP less than 1.15. The White Sox are 7-3 in their last 10 road games. The White Sox are 5-1 in Buehrle's last 6 road starts overall. Chicago is 5-1 in Buehrle's last 6 starts with 4 days of rest. The White Sox are 14-5 in Buehrle's last 19 starts overall.

White Sox are 16-5 last 21 games against the American League West.
Over is 4-1 last 5 road games against a team with a winning home record.

Key Injuries: 2B Gordon Beckham (hand) is questionable.

Projected Score: 2

ATHLETICS: (-150, O/U 7) Oakland has been only mediocre of late, when they really needed a significant winning streak. The Athletics were still hopeful of catching the Texas Rangers in the American League West division standings, but they are now 9 games behind with 14 games to go this season. Oakland is 74-74 SU, including 44-30 SU at home this year. The A's are +0.97 and -11.04 units both SU and on the RL respectively this year. Offensively, Oakland has only scored more than 3 runs once in their past 6 games. Righty Trevor Cahill will make the home start tonight, as he looks to build on his Cy Young caliber season. Cahill is 16-7 SU, with an ERA of 2.84 and a WHIP of 1.08 this year. The Athletics are 4-1 in their last 5 home games against a left-handed starter. Oakland is 9-2 in Cahill's last 11 starts with 5 days of rest. The Athletics are 19-7 in Cahill's last 26 home starts. Oakland is 4-1 in Cahill's last 5 starts during game 2 of a series.

Athletics are 2-6 last 8 Tuesday games.
Under is 13-3 last 16 games against the American League Central.

Key Injuries - 3B Kevin Kouzmanoff (back) is questionable.

Projected Score: 3 (UNDER-Total of the Day)

San Diego Padres at Los Angeles Dodgers [10:10 PM ET]

PADRES: San Diego is in the midst of a critical road trip, as they try to stay in both the National League West division lead, as well as the NL Wild Card standings for insurance. Either way, it's exciting and nervous time for anyone associated with the San Diego organization. The Padres are 83-66 SU, including 41-34 SU on the road this season. San Diego is happy to see the Dodgers uniform, as they've won their past 4 meetings with the Dodgers. In those 4 wins, the Padres pitching staff limited the Dodgers to a total of 3 runs. San Diego is +18.93 and +7.88 units both SU and on the RL this season. Clayton Richard will take the mound tonight, as he is 12-8 SU with an ERA of 3.70 and a WHIP of 1.40 this year. The Padres are 5-1 in their last 6 Tuesday games overall. The Padres are 2-5 in their last 7 games during game 1 of a series. San Diego is 3-8 in their last 11 games against a starter with a WHIP greater than 1.30. The Padres are 4-12 in their last 16 games following a loss. The Padres are 4-12 in their last 16 games against a right-handed starter. San Diego is 4-0 in Richard's last 4 starts with 5 days of rest. The Padres are 9-4 in Richard's last 13 starts against the National League West. The Padres are 0-4 in Richard's last 4 starts on grass.

Padres are 1-4 last 5 road games against a team with a winning home record.
Under is 17-5-1 last 23 games following an off day.

Key Injuries - CF Tony Gwynn (wrist) is out.

Projected Score: 2

DODGERS: (-125, O/U 7) Los Angeles has been in a colossal slide of late, and it appears the slide has affected Coach Torre. Torre is rumored to be on the way out, as the Dodgers have dropped all the way down to 73-77 SU this year. With the talent this team has, there is simply no doubt that this team has underachieved this season. The Dodgers are -14.39 and -18.65 units both SU and on the RL overall this season. Los Angeles has really struggled on offense this year, and their struggles against San Diego are well documented this year. Ace pitcher Chad Billingsley will try to pick up a home win tonight, as he is 11-10 SU with an ERA of 3.55 and a WHIP of 1.31 this year. The Dodgers are 35-16 in their last 51 Tuesday games overall. Los Angeles is 2-9 in their last 11 games against the National League West. The Dodgers are 6-1 in Billingsley's last 7 starts during game 1 of a series. Los Angeles is 2-5 in Billingsley's last 7 starts following a Quality Start in his last appearance. The Dodgers are 1-5 in Billingsley's last 6 starts against the National League West.

Dodgers are 5-0 last 5 games following an off day.
Over is 4-0 last 4 games against the National League West

Key Injuries - LF Scott Podsednik (foot) is out.

Projected Score: 4 (SIDE of the Day)

Daily Sports Roundup: September 21

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Rays and Yankees continue their battle for top spot in the AL East, while the Phillies send Roy Halladay to the mound against Atlanta.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League schedule for Tuesday has Kansas City at Detroit, Seattle at Toronto, Baltimore at Boston, Cleveland at Minnesota, the White Sox at Oakland, Texas at the Angels, and Tampa Bay at the Yankees. James Shields (13-12, 4.86 ERA) will get the ball for the Rays in that last contest, while Phil Hughes (16-8, 4.31 ERA) toes the rubber for the Yankees. Righthander Shields had to settle for a no-decision in his start against New York on September 15, surrendering just one run on eight hits over his 6 1-3 innings of work while fanning eight. Righthander Hughes took the loss in that September 15 matchup, giving up four runs on six hits in 6 2-3 innings pitched that day.

Over in the National League on Tuesday it's then St. Louis at Pittsburgh, Houston at Washington, the Mets at Florida, San Francisco at the Cubs, Cincinnati at Milwaukee, Colorado at Arizona, San Diego at the Dodgers, and Atlanta at Philadelphia. Mike Minor (3-1, 5.84 ERA) is set to take on Halladay (19-10, 2.49 ERA) in that Braves/Phillies matchup. Lefthander Minor was tagged with a loss by the Nationals last time out, giving up four runs on four hits over five innings of work. Righthander Halladay is coming off his third straight victory, holding the Marlins to three runs on 10 hits over six innings of work. Halladay struck out nine in that game, and Philadelphia is 8-2 in his last 10 starts.

Seattle Mariners are 2-8 over their last 10.
Baltimore Orioles are 14-37 in their last 51 meetings in Boston.

Key stat

.642 – Colorado Rockies’ September winning percentage (77-43) since 2007. The Rockies are 13-4 this month.

Injuries that shouldn’t be overlooked

The Chicago Cubs will be without Tyler Colvin and Geovany Soto for the rest of the year. Colvin was impaled in the chest by a broken bat in a freak accident on Sunday but is now in stable condition. Colvin had 20 homers and 57 RBIs with a .254 average in his rookie season. Soto underwent right shoulder surgery to repair the joint that had been bothering him for some time. He hit .280 with 17 homers and 53 RBIs this year.

Game of the day

Tampa Bay at New York Yankees

Notable quotable

“Yeah boss, cracked rib but I’m good.” – Chad Ochocinco on his Twitter account on Monday in a reply to a question about his health from gold medal sprinter Lionel Larry. There has been no confirmation of any injury from the Cincinnati Bengals.

Tips and notes

Word has it Joe Torre would listen to the New York Mets if they’re interested in bringing him in to manage next season. Torre will step down as Los Angeles Dodgers manager at the end of the season, giving way to Don Mattingly.

New York Giants running back Brandon Jacobs may not be happy, but the team says that he isn’t going anywhere. Jacobs threw his helmet into the stands on Sunday after being pulled from the game. Rumor had it Jacobs had asked to be traded but the Giants deny that claim and say he’s staying put as Ahmad Bradshaw’s backup.

Ryan Fitzpatrick will start at quarterback for the Buffalo Bills against the New England Patriots, sending Trent Edwards to the bench. Edwards threw one touchdown through the first two games of the season, averaging 120 passing yards per game.

Tuesday's six-pack

-- Cheapest beer at any NFL stadium? $5 in Cleveland.

-- Cowboys have NFL's highest payroll, at $166.5M; Buccaneers are last in payroll, at $80.8M. Dallas is 0-2; Tampa Bay is 2-0.

-- Five times in Rams' last 18 games, Josh Brown has missed a FG in a scoreless game; this is unacceptable for an already fragile team.

-- Brett Favre threw three INTs in the home opener Sunday; he threw two picks total in eight home games last season.

-- After two weeks of NFL, there are eight 0-2 teams, eight 2-0 teams and half the league is 1-1.

-- ESPN Gameday from Boise this week- Oregon State-Boise State in prime time Saturday night. Could mean its bad week for matchups.

Tuesday's List of 13: Our first college football List of 13......

13) Arizona—Frittered away a 27-7 lead to Iowa late Saturday night, but rallied to win anyway; Foles is one of the better QB’s in country. Special teams dominated the Hawkeyes early in game.

12) Florida—Over 40% of players who traveled to Knoxville Saturday were either freshmen or redshirt freshmen. They’re getting a little better every week; problem is, they go to Alabama in 11 days. They’re not that good, yet.

11) Clemson—Had Auburn by throat Saturday, let them get away for their 14th straight series loss, which is bigger deal than you might think, since five Clemson head coaches, (including current head coach Swinney) are Alabama grads.

10) Utah—Still trying to envision the Utes in the Pac-10, which is easier than envisioning them without BYU as a conference rival.

9) Texas—Great series of articles on espn.com by Pat Forde last week; he got pretty much full access from Mack Brown and the Texas program for a week. If you like college football, find these articles., Good stuff.

8) Oklahoma—Struggled with Air Force option after playing Florida State, but we’ll give them pass, since option is tough to prepare for in just a few days. They did crush the Seminoles, after all.

7) Ohio State— What was up with Ohio U's Bobcat mascot attacking Brutus Buckeye Saturday? Its not a good sign if your mascot is more aggressive than your linebackers. Buckeyes smoked Ohio U 43-7.

6) Auburn—Showed lot of guts rallying from behind to beat Clemson; think anyone other than Charles Barkley still wishes Tigers had hired Turner Gill instead of Gene Chizik?

5) TCU—Very fast team. Most experienced college QB in country. They’ll beat any BCS team they play in a bowl, assuming one agrees to play them. Mark that down right now.

4) Oregon—Please play someone. I know the Tennessee game was actually a cash grab back when it was scheduled, but the Vols are at the bottom of the SEC right now. Three teams Oregon played so far aren’t good, but that doesn’t mean the Ducks aren’t very good.

3) Weirdness of college football is that Boise State needs Virginia Tech, Cal and Oregon State to have good seasons, so their ratings can go up as season progresses. Oregon State painted one of its practice fields blue this week, to simulate Boise. Took 44,000 gallons of paint. Wow.

2) Nebraska- They crushed Washington in Seattle, and I think Huskies will go to a minor bowl. Question will be if Cornhuskers come up against a team of equal athletic ability, will freshman QB Martinez pull Huskers through with his passing?

1) Alabama—Senior QB who never loses, young but improving defense. Trap game this week at Arkansas, with Gators coming in next week.
