PHILADELPHIA -- Eagles coach Andy Reid says Michael Vick will be the team's starting quarterback.

NFC East blog
ESPN.com's Matt Mosley writes about all things NFC East in his division blog.

• Blog network: NFL Nation

Reid made the decision Tuesday, a day after saying Kevin Kolb would start Sunday at Jacksonville. Kolb missed the last six quarters because of a concussion, and Vick played well in his absence.

Vick threw for 175 yards and one touchdown and ran for 103 yards in the 27-20 season-opening loss to the Packers. He had 284 yards passing and two TDs in a 35-32 win at Detroit on Sunday.

Kolb started two games in his first three seasons before he became the team's No. 1 quarterback after Donovan McNabb was traded to Washington. Kolb struggled in the first half against Green Bay.

Wow, I'm shocked. I guess the pressure from Philly fans made this decision. It's obvious that Vick was going to be the starter at some point down the road but not under these circumstances.

I live in the area and listening to sports talk shows . This move doesn't surprise me. Vick opened a lot of eyes on Sunday. I think Reid after discussion with staff and FO came to this decision. Vick might be one of top QB's in the NFL right now. Coaching has changed Vick and turned him into a pocket passer with unbelievable scrambling ability. It would not be fair to the team with an inferior NFC east to not challenge for playoff spot. How do you tell players who have seen injuries to starters in the first game of the season to wait till next year. It's very possible that FB Leonard Weaver and OL Jamal Jackson might not play again. Weaver's injury was so severe that due to his age he might not return. Jamal Jackson will have not played in 2 years if he returns next year. Now your going to tell players this a rebuilding year and to be patient when you have a QB who can win now.

Simply don't see how he could not make this decision. I was watching the game Sunday and looked at my wife and told her that I've honestly never seen a better athlete play that position in all my years of watching football. He's not only an athlete but the ball just comes out of his hand like a damn rocket. All of this after almost two years in the can.

Right now, Mike Vick is probably better than 65-70% of all NFL starting QB's.

He may be a great athlete and be the second coming of JC to Philadelphia...but the guy is still total scum for personally killing dogs IN the ring and OUT of the ring (for not being good fighters).

I always thought there was an unwritten rule that an injury wouldn't cost a starter a job. Even in baseball when a pitcher is 4th in the rotation, he gets his spot back eventhough the rookie they brought up is 5-0 with a 2.5 era.

I think the Eagles management wanted to see if there would be any backlash to Vick when they signed him. This is one of the few cities in the U.S. where the fans would welcome a child molester murderer if he could help the team.

I was of the opinion that sitting Vick after what he showed and then having Kolb play all season and do poorly would have cost andy reid his job. a successful head coach needs to stay open minded and adapt. astonishing that reid was able to make this decision after all he said about kolb...and i give him due respect for pulling the trigger. good to see a coach that is willing to swallow his pride and do the right thing. kolb may still evolve into the starter, but it would be unfair to sit vick until he deserves to be sat.

Didn't you ever see Randal Cunningham?

I agree. I think Kolb and Reid would be out of Philly if he came out looking like he did in those few minutes for the rest of the season.

I personally don't condone Vick and his Bad Newz Kennels and what he did to the dogs. But his crime was due more to his upbringing. What we never were exposed to he witnessed as a child all the time so he couldn't and probably still doesn't grasp the outrage from others. As Americans we slaughter and animals that other countries and religions worship. My father raised German Shepards and birds when I was young. A lot of people like to shoot birds down. Mike Tyson would knock a fool out who hurt a pigeon while I am sure a few of the people in the RX have eaten pigeon before.

I give Vick credit for serving his time in jail and not rolling over on anybody while all of his so called boys ratted him out for lighter or no sentences at all. Vick won't participate in dog fights again not because he thinks it is wrong but because it is against the law. Much like most of us won't fuck a teenage girl not because we don't want to but simply because it is against the law. You make both dog fighting and fucking teenagers legal and they would be just as popular as horse racing, smoking and drinking.

The guy made some errors in judgement there's no doubt about that. What I really think happened was he just didn't have a care in the world (thought he was invincible) and had no clue what was going on with his money.

That said, the guy has come out and taken advantage of his opportunity. He has said all the right things and even after Reid said yesterday that Kolb would be the starter, he still said the right things. Nobody is doubting at this point that he's been anything but professional.

Let's keep in mind that what he did was nothing more than a misdemeanor with the exception of simply transporting the dogs across state lines. Not justifying the action at all but the guy seems to have learned his lesson unlike a guy like Pacman that has been arrested about 8 times. I can name so many guys in the NFL with a much worse past than Vick it's not even funny. I'd take Vick or Roethlisberger any day.

But would you let Roethlisberger hang around your 17 year old daughter and her friends? Big Ben still has that frat boy attitude and thinks it's not rape if he is QB1.

Dude, my fault LOL. I meant Vick OVER Roethlisberger. Vick was involved in dog fighting and Big Ben is molesting women in the bathroom at a tavern. Which is worse?

Couple thoughts as an Eagles fan:

- I think Reid and the Eagles have this under control. Mainly because Vick is playing the good soldier. He would accept the backup role and not cause trouble. In addition Kolb seems like a super cool kid and will probably take it in stride and be confident his time will come eventually without sulking or losing confidence.

-Vick looks great, so start him, win right away. If they went with Kolb it would be ok too. I think Kolb is ready and will be a good QB. Nice problem to have. Similiar to with McNabb leaving. If he stayed I would still be happy to have him as our QB. All three are quality QB's.

The thing that I saw vs Detroit was that Vick looked more accurate than he ever did in ATL.
