Paul Konerko: On a path for the Hall of Fame? :think2: Written by MC3 Sports Media Monday, 27 September 2010 09:34

Plenty-o-talk today about whether Paul Konerko will stay in the South Side of Chicago after the conclusion of the 2010 season. Most of the talk is centered around Ozzie Guillen and the fact that Paulie would be more likely to stay if Guillen stays and more likely to leave if Guillen is not retained. At 34 years old, Konerko has had arguably his finest season. This brings me back to January when I opined that Paulie, if he continued at a productive pace, needed to be considered for the Hall of Fame.
As you may recall, the argument for Paulie as a future HOF member is not so much based on the quality of his body of work (it's very good but it's not babe Ruth-like) but more because his career is better than that of Andre Dawson's who was just inducted.
An entire season has now passed since these two pieces were written and more than ever the premise remains true. If Andre Dawson and Bill Mazerowski are in, Albert Belle and now Paul Konerko have to be in too.

No Hall of Fame.

.280 32-101 type seasons are nice, one might say solid, but for a corner postion player the power numbers come up a little short.

He's 35, if he plays 5 more years, and puts up the same 32 -101 power numbers, I'd move that no to 'on the fence'.
Average fielding first baseman, OBA slightly above league average, never dominated his postion, like I said, to be at least considered, he has to get to the 'magic' 500 HR mark, and a lot of todays voters are saying 600 HR's are the new 500 HR's.

If Kent Hrbek is not in the Hall, neither should Konerko.

Starting to get close to the Joe Adcock level. Still at least a couple more good years away from Boog Powell level. Which means that out of the 550 sports writers who vote, there is a very good chance 20 or so of them will vote for Konerko

Great season, but not even close unless he duplicates this season another 4-5 times, then we can start talking.

He's had some very good seasons, but he's also had some very off seasons. Not enough consistency.

Absolutely not.

He has been in the top 10 in HRs five times, Graig Nettles same number of times
He has been in the top 10 in RBI three times, Graig Nettles same number of times
Best finish for MVP: 6th in 2005, Nettles: 5th in 1977
Gold Gloves: 0, Nettles: 4 GGs
Better career batting avg than Nettles, .280 vs .248
Konerko 2005 ALCS MVP, Nettles 1981 ALCS MVP

When all said and done, Konerko is going to be looked upon as an above-average player, but not a legend to be enshrined in HOF.

I am not even sure who I think is better, but I always have liked both of these guys.
These 2 look about as close as can be.

6/7/2011: Konerko’s homer was the 379th of his career, moving into a tie for 61st all-time with Orlando Cepeda and Tony Perez. (both HOF)

He will have 475 HR's, 1500 RBI's and a key player on a WS Champion. He has a chance but needs 2-3 more outstanding years.

Lets see, he has homered in 5 straight games and top 3 in HR's and RBI's, even with that SABR-Stiff Dunn behind him in the order.
