I work a lot and do not have the opportunity to check the forum as much as I'd like and often miss a lot of my favorite user's plays.
I recommend giving each user the option to allow or deny others to "follow them". If they allow it then have an option on their profile that allows other users to see: option 1 - all new posts, option 2 - all new started threads, 3 - etc.
I don't really know the best way but this may give someone an idea on how to do it. Maybe have the system email the first post in the thread or just send an alert.
