I'm no rules expert, but is it really legal to lateral (which is effectively what it is) from OOB and the play continue?

I guess the reason it doesnt happen more often cause its INSANELY DIFFICULT to do. Way too many things have to line up just right.

Auburn did it against UNC in a bowl game like 6-7 years ago...except the defense caught it was flying out of bounds and threw the ball forward to his teammate. I think they threw a flag and allowed the interception to stand it was total bullshit....how can you break the rules to gain possession of the ball

Something similar happened in the ATL/NO game on Sunday. Here is the play by play.

T.Morstead punts 39 yards to ATL 41, Center-J.Kyle, downed by NO-J.Kyle. New Orleans challenged the kick touched ruling, and the play was REVERSED. T.Morstead punts 41 yards to ATL 39, Center-J.Kyle. T.DeCoud MUFFS catch, RECOVERED by NO-J.Kyle at ATL 42. J.Kyle ran ob at ATL 42 for no gain. The ball struck #28 DeCoud's foot, was recovered by the Saints' #80 Graham, who lateralled to #57 Kyle.
