breaking news
Oscar-nominated actor Tony Curtis has died at age 85, Entertainment Tonight reported Thursday.
Entertainment Tonight said a representative for the actor's daughter, Jamie Lee Curtis, confirmed the death but did not provide further details.
Curtis appeared in Billy Wilder's "Some Like It Hot" with Marilyn Monroe and Jack Lemmon, and received an Oscar nomination in 1959 for "The Defiant Ones," in which he starred with Sidney Poitier.
Born Bernard Schwartz in New York City on June 3, 1925, Curtis grew up in the city's Bronx section.
He joined the U.S. Navy in 1943 and upon his release he returned to New York City to attend acting classes. A contract with Universal Pictures took him to Hollywood, where he made his debut in 1948's "Criss Cross."
The actor appeared in more than 140 major motion pictures, appears on the cover of The Beatles's "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club" album and voiced the character "Stony Curtis" on the cartoon "The Flintstones."
Curtis married five times and has six children. His daughter, actress Jamie Lee Curtis, is from first marriage to actress Janet Leigh.
Curtis is survived by his wife, Jill VandenBerg, and his five children.

Tony Curtis, dead at 85 of Cardiac Arrest, led a great life. He is probably best known for his role co-starring along with Sidney Poitier in the 1958 dramatic prison chain gang escape movie "The Defiant Ones" directed by Sidney Kramer. The movie has become a classic due to it's groundbreaking plot for it's time.

Two convicts, Curtis and Poiter, one black and the other white - escape from their chain gang in the South, and, through their whole ordeal together, learn to cooperate and put aside all their racial animosities as they try to evade capture. I watched it recently on one of the vintage movie channels here in Costa Rica.

The Defiant One was nominated for six Academy Awards:
Best Actor in a Leading Role (Tony Curtis and Sidney Poitier) (lost to David Niven - Separate Tables)
Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Theodore Bikel)
Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Cara Williams)
Best Director - Sidney Kramer (lost to Vincent Minnelli - Gigi)
Best Film Editing
Best Picture (lost to the musical Gigi)

The film won two Oscars:
Best Cinematography,
Best Writing, Story and Screenplay - Written Directly for the Screen

Curtis also was well known along with Jack Lemmon for his work in the 1959 classis comedy directed by Billy Wilder, Some Like it Hot. The film was awarded an Academy Award for Best Costume Design, Black-and-White (Orry-Kelly) and was nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role (Jack Lemmon), Best Art Direction-Set Decoration, Black-and-White (Ted Haworth, Edward G. Boyle), Best Cinematography, Black-and-White, Best Director and Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium. Won The Golden Globe in 1959 for best picture.

The film has been acclaimed worldwide as one of the greatest films ever made. In 1989, it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant," going in on the first year of voting.
In 2000, readers of Total Film magazine voted it the eighth greatest comedy film of all time.

From 1949 until 2008, Tony Curtis appeared in more than 100 films and made frequent television appearances. He also gained acclaim later in life as an artist.

His daughter Jamie Lee Curtis made a statement today "My father leaves behind a legacy of great performances in movies and in his paintings and assemblages. He leaves behind children and their families who loved him and respected him and a wife and in-laws who were devoted to him. He also leaves behind fans all over the world. He will be greatly missed.."
