• If the Padres win and Braves win Sunday, there will be a three-team tiebreaker -- the first in Major League history. The Giants would face the Padres on Monday in San Diego for the NL West title. The loser travels to Atlanta for a game Tuesday with that winner being the Wild Card entry.

• If the Padres win and Braves lose, the Padres and Giants would tie for the West title. But because the Padres own a better head-to-head record against the Giants in 2010, the Padres would win the NL West and have home-field advantage in the first round against the Reds. In this scenario, the Giants would be the Wild Card entry.

• If the Giants and Braves win, the Giants win the NL West and the Braves are the Wild Card entry. The Padres would be finished for the season.

• If the Padres and Braves lose, the Padres would travel to Atlanta for a one-game playoff Monday to determine the Wild Card entry.

Not that I'm a conspiracy type of guy and all, but MLB would love the attention of a three way tie, I would not be schocked at the end of the day if SD beats SF, and the Braves win for a three way dance.

MLB is not stupid enough to sell it correctly either, they can market it like this "The Cinderella Kids from San Diego takes on Kung Fu Panda and the Lincecum kid for the right for a possible showdown with the Braves and their managerial bad boy in his swan song after 25 successful seasons led by new sensation Justin Heyward............."

MLB could bring major attention to their product.
Good attention.

As far as the Padres and Braves are concerned, if the Braves win and the Padres lose, the Braves are in and if the Padres win and the Braves lose, the Padres are in correct?

SF could play 164 games if they lose today, then they play at SD on Mon, if they lose again they play at Atl on Tues.

I'd love to see that scenario !

There's one thing I still don't understand... from MLB.com:

"If the Padres and Braves both win, then all three teams have identical 91-71 records. Step one is determining the division champion. San Francisco would play at San Diego on Monday to decide that one. The loser then plays at Turner Field on Tuesday to decide the Wild Card."

"If the [Yankees and Rays] finish tied after Sunday's games, then the Rays would be division champions by virtue of their 10-8 head-to-head record this season."

So the NL west tie is decided by a one-game playoff, but the AL east is decided by the head-to-head tie-breaker? Why the difference??? Is is because of the 3-way tie with the Braves? If so, why should that matter? Shouldn't first place in both divisions be decided the same way? Are there enough question marks in this last paragraph????????????????????????

Because the in the AL everything else is decided, there is no third team involved, so in the Yankees and Rays scenario, the tie breaker becomes head to head, same as it would have been in the NL if the Braves were out of the equation, and it was just SD and SF for the division, and wid card, the team wtih the better head to head record would have been division champ, the other would have been wild card.

So it is because of the possible 3-way tie that there would be 2 one-game playoffs in the NL! I still think the division titles should be settled the same way, then a tie for the wild card settled with a playoff game.... but like you said, MLB would prefer the 2-playoff game scenario better.
