NEW YORK (AP)—Major League Baseball’s average attendance dropped for the third straight season, with a slight dip of nearly a half percent this year.

The 30 teams combined to draw 73.06 million fans in 2010, an average of 30,141, after Sunday’s regular season finales.

Last year, in the midst of a global economic downturn, the teams drew 73.42 million, an average of 30,350. That average was a 6.7 percent drop from 2008’s 32,528, when the total was 78.59 million.

Major League Baseball set records in 2007, with a total of 79.5 million and an average of 32,785.

I'm amazed people even go to sporting events anymore. It's a hassle all the way around. Traffic, parking, overpriced and average food, unruly fans and grossly overpriced tickets. You can sit in the comfort of your own home and watch lots of different games, bet on the computer and have plenty of good food and drink along with a restroom right there. Like I said, why even bother going to the game. The best seat in the house is in your house. On the couch. It's time for Monday night football and live betting.

Yet everytime I hear Bud Selig do a interview, he leads you to believe how great and thriving the sport is.

I was watching the last home stand the Mets had at Citi last week.
Empty seats scattered all over the house, especially the big shot seats where there was 3 empty seats for every one that was occupied.

What is amazing (and embarrassing as a life-long Pirate fan) is the Bucs' attendance actually went up slightly this year. They have the expectations so low in Pittsburgh that enough people turn out to watch a 57 win team that is their worst in 58 years and the 18th straight losing season! "Free'' fireworks and trinkets keeps the morons happy I guess. In general, I am suprised that MLB attendance has not dropped worse.
