An NFL Lockout would of course be bad, but I would be much more worried about an NBA Lockout.

NFL - 256 Regular season games
NBA - 1230 Regular season games

Nearly 5 times as many NBA games as NFL games over the course of a season, and in terms of overall turnover, an NBA lockout would cost more. Of course it depends on the location and client base of each book, but I would suggest that most books wouldnt take 5 times as much turnover on an NFL game as they do on an NBA match - therefore over the course of a season an NBA lockout would cost more...

Don't think that an NFL lockout would hurt the books much. Unlike the last two NFL work stoppages, the NCAA wouldn't hesitate to flood Sundays with games, including marquee matchups.

seems like the true degenerates the books really count on would gravitate to CFB....back in '87, there wasn't nearly as much tv exposure, but these days, just about every team can be found on tv....

There is absolutely NOTHING that could replace the NFL. Bookies would take it on the chin and wouldn't recover until the NFL was back in business.

Think of the volume difference though.

Hell, on sportsinsights, you'll see wager volumes there of hundreds of thousands even on the lowest rated NFL games vs..., well, thousands on a random NBA game. That is a difference of HUNDREDS in magnitude.

Yeah I guess - to be fair, I was thinking more in terms of European books actually, books who no longer accept bets from the US anymore, where the popularity of Basketball accross the whole of Europe is probably at least on a par with NFL.

They would be fine missing a few Sunday's during the regular season , but if there was no Super Bowl it would be devastating. ... especially to the high-end Vegas books. The Super Bowl by it's self could be 25% of a books annual business.
